I understand how much junk is out there and how easy it is to spread it. I think you underestimate how much of the junk that is spread is from big actors on the stage, including us, including the NSA. We've had the FBI setting up radical Islamic terror cells across the US so that they'd have easy fish to catch. That's just the tip of the iceberg.
You Won’t Be Able to Disable (or Delay) Windows Updates on Windows 10 Home Microsoft says Windows 10 will be “always up-to-date,” and they mean it. There’s no way to turn Windows Update off. Microsoft says feature updates will be tested on consumer devices before they’re rolled out to business PCs. With Windows 10, Windows becomes a lot more like Google Chrome or a web application — it will automatically update. But they’re forcing more than security updates, and Microsoft has a troubling track record with broken Windows updates recently. ------ When its too good to be true, its too good to be true. MS just F'ed up here.
I have a really crappy laptop that will get the Windows 10 upgrade. What is the worst that could happen, downgrade back to 7?
The worst that could happen is that you have an older laptop for which no Windows 10 drivers will be made available for some of the really outdated budget devices on it. Then you wind up with the classic Windows spagheitiware problem compounded by devices that are only partly functional or non-functional. As much as I dislike Apple's pricing scheme Macs are looking better and better in the age of Big Brother.
My rule for technology is that the newer thing should always be able to do what the older thing did. My company had systems in the late 90's, early 00's that had better functionality than the current system. New technology should always be the older technology PLUS new features, or at least a legacy option.
Forgot to add that I am typing this from a 2009 Macbook running Yosemite. I used to be PC guy, but there is no doubt that the Mac OS is superior than Windows.
I was a Mac guy from the moment the Macintosh launched until 1995. That was the point that Windows superior software selection over-rode the Mac's better OS and graphics. Windows 95 converted me to the PC. Now I'm about to switch back and it's going to be because platform based software is becoming obsolete in the Internet age and the OS is again becoming more important.
I was a linux guy, even worked for RedHat briefly where they eat their own dogfood. Things could change but I don't think I'm ever leaving Mac OS. The only reason I still use Windows is because I want to play some games that are PC only. I have no idea who Linux appeals to anymore. The new Ubuntu Unity is dogshit. Probably just broke geeks just like how it was and always will be lol.
You can now play some of the latest games (BATMAN, BORDERLANDS 2, BIOSHOCK, etc) on Linux now more so thanks to STEAM and its upcoming STEAMBOX. Ubuntu Unity is simply and it works that old people have no trouble using it. If you dont like UNITY, you can change to any launcher or use GNOME, etc, w/e you want. Thats the beauty of LINUX. Choice, options, SECURITY, and its mostly FREE!
You can play a limited number of games and I bet it's a drag to get them to work. IE you have to hit the command-line-interface and who really wants to use that outside of network/system engineers? I just use fluxbox or XFCE but again, that requires manual work on my part. And security is a blanket statement and there are very few true security pros. If they want to break into your system they're going to do it whether its Windows, Linux, or Mac. I don't feel anymore safer behind Linux than I do behind a Mac for instance.
Yes, I understand that Mac is also a personal computer. I also understand that not all bleach is Clorox. When it comes to every day, non-gaming, there is no comparison between Mac OS and Windows. I still own a PC and occasionally build computers from scratch, so this is an unbiased opinion.
I've been a VFX artist for 20 years ... Linux is more secure ... one reason is because there are fewer worldwide users ... it's also not great for casual users that are somewhat technical. I have noticed they are the ones that get themselves in the most trouble. The free thing is a ridiculous argument ... how much is windows these days?? Especially when compared to the software you are running ? Macs are great for casual out of the box use and graphic design. Although I will say that some of the more hardcore stuff have has success on the latest Macs. I use a Mac for my photography. For what I do professionally (simulation work) I need Windows or Linux ... it's just easier to find hardware for these machines than a Mac. I'm looking to upgrade my home workstation this coming fall when the new Intel architecture is released for the Xeons. That thing is going to run me about 12K. ugh.
