Did a SUPER RARE Sony-Nintendo PlayStation prototype just pop up online? Possibly, maybe
    And all that SNES ...

"My dad worked for a company, apparently one of the guys he used to work with, I think his name was Olaf, used to work at Nintendo and when my dad's company went bankrupt, my dad found it in a box of 'junk' he was supposed to throw out".

Diebold later shared the above video on YouTube in which he claimed it was "not fake, not made by some Russian dude".

Only a small number of the consoles were produced in the early Nineties, after Sony announced at CES in 1991 that it had struck a video-gaming deal with Nintendo to develop a PlayStation.

    A Brief History:

Pay attention, 10 second history lesson: way back in 1988, Sony and Nintendo worked together on a CD-ROM peripheral for the SNES. In 1991 it was revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show by Sony but the day after Nintendo announced that, actually, it was partnering with Phillips for its CD tech. Sony, furious, more or less spite-developed its half of the tech into the PlayStation 1 we know today, to get back at Nintendo.

Whatever rich supernerd buys it won't even think about playing games on it,, the same way rich car enthusiasts will keep a car in mint condition for years never driving it once.

I believe there are zero games . Maybe the only thing is the test cartridge that came with it. Would be interesting to see how it boots up.

I knew the story about the Philips CD I that fucking blew ass and I had heard rumors about a Nintendo Playstation so I guess this pretty much confirms it.

BTW if you are interested in seeing the CDI up close and personal this guy is funny as hell and reviews it, this is only part 1. There are 2 others I believe.

yeah i finally watched those videos yesterday. What a shitty console. Nintendo F'ed up and it goes to show how funny history is because PLAYSTATION is now a massive and successful brand. Im glad Sony continued on.

It's funny how Sony had deals with both Sega and Nintendo as a Playstation partner.

For Nintendo it wasn't a big deal. This would have just been a CD add on for the SNES which would have served no real purpose; the Sega CD had no market impact. Nintendo was smart to scrap it.

The real folly was Sega of Japan scrapping the deal Sega of America had with Sony which would have been the next gen cd system follow up to the Genesis.

Sega of Japan raced into development for their own system, the Saturn, and cancelled the Sony partnership. So Sony went ahead with the console on its own, and went head to head with the Saturn as the first next next gen cd consoles after the 16 bit cartridge generation.

The Saturn was a rushed, weak system that cost $100 more than the Playstation and had few games at launch. The Playstation was an incredible system with great launch games and $100 less.

Obviously we all know that Playstation would become the premiere video game console brand and the Saturn would effectively kill Sega's console business. The book "Console Wars" chronicles this and is an excellent read.

The Nintendo Playstation is a cool piece of video game history but likely would have killed the Playstation brand had it been released. The video game market at that time just wasn't interested in add ons to their consoles, and that's all this was. Sega tried two, the CD and 32x, and both were flops.

Even without the Playstation partnership Nintendo follows the SNES with two extreme successful consoles - the N64 and Wii, as opposed to Sega who tried to salvage the Saturn debacle with the Dreamcast only to be completely destroyed in the market by the ps2.

I remember drooling over the pre-release dreamcast articles with photos of the games with awesome graphics. I don't think I ever even ended up playing a game on the thing.

I know I played it at least once but I think it was probably behind Neo Geo and Turbografix 16 in the pecking order. Not that either were great but Sega CD and Dreamcast were just terrible.

I remember my friend had one back in Elementary school and everyone thought he was cool because of it lol. But looking back JetSetRadio and Shenmue were reportedly GREAT games. The DC overall was a great system for its time from what I remember hearing with internet and a cool memory card. The System overall was technically ahead of its time. Also..CRAZY TAXI!!!

The Dreamcast was actually a good system, but it was doomed to pay for the sins of the Saturn. Sega's decision ultimately led to the rise of the PlayStation brand, and no matter how good the Dreamcast was it was never going to overcome the powerhouse of the PlayStation brand and the anticipation for the PS2, which was released only a few months afterwards and is the highest selling console of all time. The Dreamcast brand had no chance of competing with the PlayStation brand.

Ultimately, the Sega brand didn't have the strength of the Nintendo brand to create a new console brand with every generation. Nintendo is the brand that has value, and that value transfers to the new console name when they create new systems. Sega does not have that same value. Sega had failed before (8 bit Master System) and after (Saturn and Dreamcast) the Genesis. The Saturn and Dreamcast were entirely new brands to consumers so they didn't carry over the goodwill of the Genesis. Sega's biggest mistake was never releasing a Genesis II, which is what had value. Sony understood that concept which is why the Playstation is the brand, not Sony. Same with XBox and Microsoft.

    None.

They never released it, it was supposed to be for Nintendo Playstation games, which never existed. Nintendo backed out of the deal and Sony decided to make the Sony Playstation instead of the Nintendo Playstation as originally intended.

Speaking of Dreamcast, not sure if you all heard...Shenmue 3 is coming out. That is going to be great, Also apparently on Sony.

This console looks cool, but some guy is going to pay stupid money for it
