I think that training & licensing when it comes to pistols is a good idea. Both already exist in NYS and many others.

My question is, how does that stop bad guys from getting guns?

I'm not sure how many states or localities require gun training before you can get a license. Based on what I've read the NRA opposes it even though 74% of their members are for it. While good guys with guns can help people if they don't know they're doing innocent people can get killed. Bad guys can get guns so does this mean no effective gun control and training.

Grenades - people need more grenade licenses. They do crowd control and fishing much better than guns do.

Just a question Husker. What about cars? Should you be required to take a driving test. Even if you know how to drive a car.

That's my point. There are so many guns in circulation in the U.S. that training and licensing aren't going to prevent access. That's why (in my original post) i said it may be too late and something drastic would need to be done to swing the trend of gun violence the other way.

I guess this as good a spot as any to post this.

With what has been going on with the mass shootings lately I was starting to have some second thoughts about gun ownership and what should be allowed. I was starting to have thoughts that maybe we should make them less accessible.

I had those thoughts many years ago and then some little punk shot me in the back, being he was maybe 15 but probably younger I know it was an illegal firearm. My thoughts then changed to letting everyone have a gun if they were of sound mind and they wanted one.

It took quite a few years but I started once again leaning toward making them less accessible, thinking what could it hurt. Well then one night after leaving a party my friend is walking home, I just happened to leave at the same time and we had split up a bit down the road, well a car pulled up to him and the four guys started talking crap and then blew him away with a .357 to the chest. Once again an illegal hand gun. I had to identify the body since his brother was too broken up to do it, I also had to carry his bloodied medicine bag on a 28 hour bus ride so he could be buried with it. This time my thoughts turned to everyone being required to carry a gun if they were of age and of sound mind.

That was almost 25 years ago and I was once again softening my stance and thinking maybe something has to be done. We need to get the guns out of everyone's hands.

Of course wouldn't you know it some asshole kids decide they are going to crash a party at the house my son and 3 of his friends rent over by UCF. Well it was late and they were already starting to get people out of the house when this group shows up, they are told the party is over but they didn't want to hear that and they want to start fighting. That's fine my son can take care of himself, one of his roommates fights MMA, no problem. Except one of them decides my son defending himself by punching another one of them was not going to go and he pulls out a gun and shoots at my sons head. Luckily he missed and they took off quickly after the shots were fired, of course they are being told by the sheriff the chances of them catching and convicting them is pretty low. My son even found out the name of one of them, who happened to have held up a Starbucks less than 2 years ago, but the detective told he it was hearsay evidence. I don't care what kind of fucking evidence it is pick the motherfucker up and start questioning him.

As you probably guess I have swung back full tilt towards every law abiding citizen having a gun. Illegal guns? 10 year mandatory minimum for possession and 20 years if it is used in commission of a crime.

I am thinking about getting all my kids CCW training as an early Christmas present and then if they want I will buy them their first gun.

sounds about right. i spent my 20's and most of my 30's in jacksonville. people don't believe me when i say that was as close to the wild wild west as could be. seen more gun play than i cared for, even with guns of my own. couldn't see raising my girls in that town,so soon as i had the opportunity i came back to the sleepy hudson valley.

Well I got shot in The Bronx and the other 2 incidents were in Florida but the location does not really seem to matter because where ever you go the criminals seem to have guns. I have things covered on the home front though. Mossberg Persuader with the pistol grip is my fav.

just the sound of the action on a pump shotgun is enough to make most criminals reconsider their intentions. good choice for home defense
