Full auto firearms have been very strictly regulated since 1934. Besides that "assault rifles" are not the big problem, the high capacity magazines are. Large capacity magazines were used in over 25% of all gun crimes, "assault weapons" between 2% and 8%.

I don't know how easy or hard it is to get automatic weapons. There's a lot of ways to get around the law.

That said, my previous post stands: the Neo-cons and their chosen instruments were absolutely convinced this was doable at the time they went in and then gradually realized the only possible outcome was a fiasco and the only thing they might have a chance at influencing was how bad the damage was.
