to me it is this by far. We had the lead late. we had the ball in their territoy. that team was a superbowl calibur team... if we won we would have went to play the falcons in the superbowl, a team we beat like 35-3 earlier in that season. That team would havve imo won the superbowl if they held on. that fumble killed us. it was back breaking. we didnt just lose, ti show we lost, so many close plays and killer plays that went against us. the AFCC game losses to the colts and steelers hurt, but those werent great teams, those were cinderalla teams and you always knew eventually the clock would strike midnight. that 98 team was great championship calibur team
Great post, Jay. That is exactly how I feel. Losing in 09 and 10 hurt, but still surprising and great seasons. Hard to know if the Jets would have beat the Saints or Packers in the each of those Super Bowls. 1998 however: 10 point lead in the 3rd quarter, if they hold on, would likely mop the floor with the Falcons en route to their 2nd Super Bowl title. Instead: they blew it, causing champ to continue to make this face:
The "Fake Spike" Game hurt so much. I was a young Jets fan and so in love with the Gang Green. The team never recovered from the loss that season. I learned to hate the Fins from that point on.
Charlie Steiner was the radio announcer, and he said the Jets would win, and then Gastineau happened. I was twelve and that was the first time I got that shitty feeling that has become familiar with the team. Funny thing was I started following the Mets that same year, and they had the miracle game six. So I was kind of shocked when the Jets lost. I guess I was surprised that it could end badly. '98 Denver was the worst though I think, because that was our year. We had Tuna and Vinny and 12-4 with our only first round bye ever. In '05 and '10 and especially in '09' I didn't trust it. But I truly believed we would win the Super Bowl in '98.
By pathetic effort, you mean struggling to play through an injury, right? He had a torn bicep. But go ahead and try to play a full NFL game with that. I'm sure anyone on this board could have done better with that injury. Losing to Pittsburgh in the divisonal round in the 2004 season was the worst for me. I was stuck in a room with all my family and they are all Steelers fans. We had been going at it all game. Doug Brien killed my 15 year old hopes and dreams.
Ha, you're right. The other thing is, all these damn games everyone is mentioning were on the road, all road games. But in that game there against the Fish we were the better team going into that game. That's what kills me too. Not sure I can say that about the other games, but I'm certain we would've won a couple of them if they were home games
I don't know if you are a Favre fan or what, but it definitely was pathetic. Sit yourself down if that is the quality of play you bring to the table. It wasn't just injury though. He did not want to be playing and everyone could tell.
FORGET whether Farve had an injury or not. Can someone explain to me why Mangini decided to GO for it on 4th and 4 from the Jets 20 with 2:30 to go with all 3 timeouts lef AND the Two-minute warning?!?!!?
Yeah, what a mess. That is why the 2008 season is so upsetting to me. After the Titans game, it was clear the Jets were front runners in the AFC. Then it all fell apart. Favre was injured, sure, but it was much more than that.
easily the loss to the steelers in the AFC chip to me... mainly because we whooped their asses in the 2nd half..and i know if we weren't still high off that pats beat down we would've beaten them and i loved our chances vs GB that year in the SB..
1. 1987 AFC semi final vs Cle 2. 2011 Christmas Eve loss to Giants 3. 1969 AFL play-off loss to Chiefs (I was young...I was at the game ...it was very cold..)
The 2010 AFC Championship loss in Pittsburgh. After the win in NE I thought it was our year. The Jets had the better team. I'm still waiting for them to take the next step.
That game killed me. But, number 1 all time for me is still the AFC Championship game loss at Denver. We were less than a half of football away from going on to win the Superbowl in convincing fashion. I made a poll on this message board last season (right after the crushing packers loss) asking Jets fans what their most painful loss was among the litany of classic Jets losses. If my memory serves me well, the AFC Championship game loss to the Steelers won the poll and the 86 divisional loss to Cleveland was a close second.
