Well for one thing in South Carolina if you aren't convicted of a crime like drug possession (and his case hadn't come to trial yet) then you can buy a gun. Also based on what I read you don't have to get a license for a hand gun or a rifle in South Carolina. It's as easy as pie to get them. As for a Glock. A weapon of choice for murderers.
Federal law requires federally licensed firearms dealers (but not private sellers) to initiate a background check on the purchaser prior to sale of a firearm. Federal law provides states with the option of serving as a state “point of contact” and conducting their own background checks using state, as well as federal, records and databases, or having the checks performed by the FBI using only the federalNational Instant Criminal Background Check System (“NICS”) database. (Note that state files are not always included in the federal database.) South Carolina is not a point of contact state for firearm purchaser background checks.1 In South Carolina, firearms dealers must initiate the background check required by federal law by contacting the FBI directly. Did the background check get run? If not, why not? If yes, did he pass? If so, how?
The problem I have with gun rights people passing the buck/blame to law enforcement in an instance like this is that when the laws are enacted they fight to NOT have them enforced....Case in point NY's Safe Act. Gun Rights advocates and republican localities have fought that shit so hard that the law is essentially meaningless because there's no enforcement anyway at the local level. (but they still cry about it). Now when there's an instance somewhere else of someone getting around the enforcement of gun control laws in a locality and it having a terrible effect - they want to cry we don't need more laws just enforcement. WTF you've been fighting ENFORCEMENT too! for years! My guess is the kid got his gun through some enforcement loophole. Probably some politician tried to close the loophole once upon a time but NRA & politicians that cater to them threw around the 2nd amendment B.S. and thus the loophole/lack of enforcement stood until a fateful day in June 2015.
I posted an article on how gun shops who broke the law are not losing their licenses yesterday. And you cavalierly (and rudely) I might add said you weren't going to read it because I posted it. So if they didn't do what they are supposed to do. They can easily get away with it. But the laws and the enforcement including background checks are insufficient. And that includes gun shows.
The safe act was a reactionary load of horse shit forced down our throats in the dead of the night without even being read by the legislators who passed it under the guise of necessity by our corrupt governor who was looking to make a political statement. parts of it have since been deemed unconstitutional. So yea - a lot of people have a problem with it and the way it happened. Do it the right way. can we use a better guideline?
probably the same arguments made in Charleston County, South Carolina when the Federal Government tried to make people have to pass a background check before getting their hands on a handgun.... to prevent shooting up churches ...but its about enforcement right? not more laws (this time)
I expect better responses from you. If that's how gun control laws are normally passed then I would assume you'd normally get a huge push back. If there's a more reasonable scenario to use as an example, especially one in SC that a better discussion point.
Thanks to the Republican right and redistricting (so they can win elections even though in a lot of cases they don't have a majority (like in the 2012 Congressional races where you won the House and the Senate- the Democrats won the popular vote-- in the Senate by 20 million votes). They make it as hard as they can for anybody esp minorities to vote. Not only inexplicably cutting hours that people have traditionally been able to vote. For no reason at all other than so they can restrict people from voting. That goes for voter ID too. I remember reading about one red state where they were playing games...forcing people to get IDs. Making them go long distances to get them. Having to pay for them. And then when they did comply saying they were out of them. So while you don't always need too much ID to get a gun. Esp. at a gun show. In some places it's much harder to vote. Of course the Republicans scream voter fraud when there isn't any. The stats on it are infinitesimally small. So for all you Tea Party patriots. Who talk about the flag and freedom etc. It's just a bunch of BS. One of the reasons other than his race the Repubs hated Eric Holder was because he took them to court on some of this.
Yea I know - requiring an ID to vote is racist. What states is it easier to buy a gun then vote? It's a simple question. Don't respond with a giant block of shit.
No. Voter ID is ok if it's reasonable. It's not a block of shit and you fucking know it. The bottom line. They don't want minorities to vote. They think Obama somehow illegally won the election because over 90% of Blacks voted for him. They didn't like that. Just google redistricting and you'll find plenty of links. Btw great Supreme Court decision today on the ACA.
I think you pointed out a problem with gun shows and not requiring a background check. I agree that should be fixed.
So it's easier in some states to get a gun than it is to vote. And that's not a crock of shit. And not just gun shows, either.
