5k? That's practically a sprint to the market to get a pack of smokes and a sixer of old Heffenreffer. What kind of homo invalid can't do a 5k?

    Heat is the biggest factor.

When I was training for one of my halfs, I had to run a bunch of lengths, last few weeks an 8, a 9 and a 10. The 8, the 10 and the half were all in pretty cool weather and they were no problem.

The 9 it was hot and muggy and I literally could not finish it. I walked about 2 miles during and almost crawled the last 3/4 mile.

I hitnk some of us recall a legend of a man who could do a 5k in motorcycle boots, drinking a 5th of whiskey, and beating a cops ass all at the same time. time? under 17 minutes of course

There was another 5k I was looking at about 20 miles from the one I am doing but I know the area, there is no shade and it is going to be near a bunch of roads, the one I am doing is in a park with plenty of shade and not a lot of cars around to push the temp up.
Have my gallon jug by my side right now, probably get this one down between tonight and tomorrow morn so should be hydrated pretty good.

Guess I'll need to give the race people next of kin info in case I don't make it.

Head for the shade whenever you can. Sun and heat is your enemy.

I am wondering if a massage today would be beneficial. A new Asian massage joint just opened up down the road, special now $45 for an hour, not sure about happy ending though.

What's the point of walk-running a 35 min 5k? Why not actually train for one 6-8 weeks from now and actually accomplish something? Not trying to be a dick I just don't get the point.

It would be really hard to train 6-8 weeks in the next 18 hours.

    The run is tomorrow.

    Something for his kid.

    Not a competitive thing.

Wake up tomorrow, jog 2.5 miles, walk the rest.

    Happy Father's Day.

    That's the point.

    Must learn breathe Daniel san.

Breathe in 4 strides...Breath out four strides.

Belly should extend on breath in.

Concentrate on that one thing alone.

30 minutes will pass by before you know it.

    Good Luck

I appreciate the input. At that point I was pretty much decided on doing it, only this that was worried about was my back. I now have a base point to work from if I decide to keep with it.

I hit the 40 mark, 40:24 to be exact. I think I would have been a bit quicker if not for 2 things, my back started hurting right away which I expected but maybe not that quick and all the meds I taking sometimes block me up. Of course my body picked this morning to stop the normal flow of things so I wasn't feeling all that great from that.
    I did it though.

Pretty slow as expected, more from my back than anything. My legs were fine, a little rubbery right now but no problem during the race, kept my breathing nice and steady, was surprised my neck didn't start hurting but I'm sure that part will hit later. I went real slow but still had a couple of times I had to walk since it felt like someone was stabbing me in the spine.

Not sure what I can do to get around the back problem. I need another surgery but was hoping to put it off for a while, not sure if my doc can figure a temporary fix until then. I'll have to add that to my list of things for him to do.

    Edit: too late.

Good for you man. I was more worried that your aerobic capacity was going to be the limiting factor but it sounds like you're in decent cardio shape. Sucks about the back though. Maybe take up cycling instead?
