He's not Ray Lewis or Drew Brees because he doesn't have a dumb shtick he does before every game where he goes "WOOF WOOF WOOF!!!!" to somehow make it all about himself. That's not about leadership. Watch his Mic'd up episode from a few years ago. Watch his football life episode on NFL Network where the coaches and players called him a textbook leader. Yelling, cussing around doesn't make you a leader. It's your performance on the field, the respect you get from your peers. People have to look up to you, when times get tough they look at you and expect you to make a play, say something, do something, be a game changer. It's not about going "ANY DOGS IN DA HOUSE?!" or whatever those other guys did. That's just entertainment.

With this much talent on D and they suck this year shouldn't we look at the coach as being the problem? I really don't think that will happen but if it does.

I really don't know what you're arguing. I believe Revis is a leader. I believe his leadership style is different than the two you just mentioned. You're not giving any new information or making the case for anything I don't already believe.

That wasnt my point, at all.

The point was that what Skrines said will have no impact on the D on this year. His play could, but his mouth wont.

David Harris leads in a very similar way to revis. By setting the precedent with his play on the field and as a model teammate. If you say David Harris isn't a leader in the locker room I think your crazy... No matter how quiet he is.

There is no leadership style. There is leadership, that's it. The other rah rah garbage differs from player to player, it's a players personality/character. It's not a leadership style. This is what I meant. People think cussing around or yelling around or not doing so is a different way of leading when it has absolutely nothing to do with leadership. Nevermind...

If you want to pigeon hole leadership into one specific narrow definition, then it would only be possible for leadership to exist in Todd Bowles role. He is for all intents and purposes the leader of football activities for this team.

But we're not discussing the position. We're discussing traits that individuals display that raise the level of those around them. Leaders take followers and bring them someplace they would not have gotten on their own. If ANY players on the team are inspired by the work ethic of Revis or Curtis Martin, then those guys were leaders. So yes, there is style embedded in the leaders, it is their personal characteristics that make them the leaders that they are.

This really feels like a debate on semantics.

What are we disagreeing about? You think Revis is a leader. I think Revis is a leader. What's the issue?

Swaggerlicious is the word Buster was looking for :D

If Revis was a TRUE leader the whole team would have held out for more money.

Anyone know if Bowles is going to use Captains? Have any been named?

Will this exact quote and article have no impact? Probably. The past 5 years the Jets have had the habit of opening up their mouth...led by their head coach. All I know is this...in all the years I have followed sports, I can't think of many baseball teams that won 60 games....basketball teams that won 20 games...or football teams that won 4 games that marveled about their new roster or compared it to a Porsche.

Have they gone too far before preseason....preseason even starts? Not yet. It's just a great idea for a team coming off a 4 win season to shut the f up. As a Jet fan....the past 5 years have gotten on my nerves with all the friggin yapping. I would first like to see one season...just one...of shut up football. I'm Rex'ed out. Shut the f up and play.

I honestly don't see where he said anything wrong. His quote wasn't like Young's with the Eagles it was just an observation that the D-line and secondary should make us one of the top defenses in the league.
Really, do we expect any less because I think if we aren't it would be a major disappointment.

Now if he said that about the offense, well that's another story.

The media has been laughing at the Jets for years now and no one outside NY is picking the Jets to win anything in 2015.

    So what?

On paper the 2015 New York Jets have one of the best defensive units ever assembled. Why be afraid to say it?

The thing I took out of that is him saying the D already has chemistry and it's showing in practice which is VERY exciting.

He'll be a nickel or dime depending on how Milliner plays.

IMO Milliner is the x-factor if he steps up ...

The 2000 Ravens and 2002 Bucs have shown us the way.

Let the D do their thing.

O don't eff things up, complement the D.

    PROTECT THE FOOTBALL!!!!

    Be opportunistic.

    Play TEAM football.

Bowles has been modeling a lot of his offseason program and coaching mentality after things that Bruce Arians did in Arizona. He hasn't said anything officially, but I would guess that he decides to name captains because they were in place with the Cardinals.

Thanks. Any thought on who he might name? Harris and Mangold would be pretty good. I'd like to see solid vets named.
