If there is gonna be gun control legislation, let the state and local govts do it. I have zero faith in the Feds to do anything right that will work. And for the most part gun laws won't work that well for reduction of crime such as what recently happened or for urban crime related to gangs. When there is a will there is a way a criminal will still get a gun to kill. Just look at the statistics. They overwhelmingly state that the people who commit the majority of gun related crimes obtained those guns illegally. And if you outright ban guns you will create a new black market that will be worth billions and will also cost billions for the govt to control since it will easily thrive.
what legislation is going to help? we got the safe act rammed down our throats after newton and gun violence is up big time. there's plenty of research on this subject btw.
It needs to be a team effort. The background check itself needs to be a federal database but implementing fire arms training, distributing licenses etc should be done on a smaller (state over viewed municipal run??) scale. I'm not advocating outlawing guns but making them less accessible and making efforts to properly train those who are capable of handling them responsibly is completely reasonable.
I just don't trust that the Feds will do it right. Seems like they find a way to screw up everything because they make it too big. I wouldn't mind a state data base but I oppose a federal one.
there is NOT plenty of research on the subject. You realize all the shit the government spends more money on today we spend a fraction of what we spent on gun violence research today than we did in the mid-1990s. That makes absolutely ZERO sense considering the uptick in violence in recent years. Its because NRA funded public interest groups pressure policy makers to not allow it. The former head of the freakin CDC said they are afraid to even bring researching gun violence up http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/26/us/26guns.html The Congressional Research Service, Congress' think tank, provides public policy research to congressional committees, wanted to do a report in 2013 on public mass shootings for health and public policy. The NRA clowns and the politicians in their pocket fought that shit so hard. These reports are just common practice. Anytime there is a public concern on an issue they provide expert research for the government officials to consider. It's not legislation, they are intended solely to inform. They were fought SO HARD against by the pro gun groups and pro gun pocketbook holders$$$ that they ultimately were forced to leave gun research out completely. "This report does not discuss gun control and does not systematically address the broader issue of gun violence. Also, it is not intended as an exhaustive review of federal programs addressing the issue of mass shootings. " https://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/R43004.pdf How in THE FUCK can one justify providing research on Public Mass Shootings but forcing them to leave out reference to guns?? At a time when we are seeing more public mass shootings than ever before.
I misunderstood what you were talking about. I was thinking more of the crime stats regarding types of weapons and shit. can we agree there is a huge difference between a "mass shooting" involving gang bangers and the type that occurred today? What happened today is the terrifying shit because it's one lunatic taking out a bunch of innocent people. any one of us could be hit by that one day. Of course no one wants either but it's not anywhere near the same when gang bangers are battling for turf or whatever it is they do. I think there are much fewer of the shit like today.
I agree theres a big difference between the two types of violence and that's the problem I was alluding to we have a hard time understanding why and how things like today happen for many reasons. One big reason though is that pro gun advocates fight that research. The CRS report I showed you actually did a decent job splitting apart mass shootings like today from gang related violence. They went well beyond just incidents with 4 or more casualties to try and narrow it down to attacks like today. The problem is thats as far as they were allowed to go with their research. I wanna know what types of guns these lone freaks are using.. I wanna know where they are getting them.. I wanna know even things like where they are coming from, what types of things happened in their past ? were they able to acquire guns legally or not? why or why not? etc. so we can look for patterns or have informed discussion on gun control. we don't even know if your last sentence is true because we don't have the research for example I mean in the context of the past, not in the context of the two types of violence
Thats fine but all states need access to eachothers system. It doesn't work if Missouri is regulating people in a reasonable manner but Alabama hands you a glock on your 12th bday. People travel and move. The laws need to be country wide so everyone is playing by the same rules. I respect your belief that states should be in charge of implementing them though.
You can have your video games. Even the violent ones that glorify guns. And you can have your guns, too. But there have to be some rules. You just can't go into a store and buy them. Kind of like you do with firecrackers. There have to be intelligent and true security checks and a waiting period before you're cleared. If you have a criminal record you don't get a gun. And you can't bring them with you into public places. And flaunt them the way they are doing in Texas. As for assault rifles. They have to be illegal. There is no reason on God's green earth that any of us need them. Do you know they let a little kid shoot an assault rifle at a shooting range and the kid accidentally shot and killed the instructor. Because the gun was bigger than she was. Talk about looney tunes and firearms.
The extreme right wing militias also love assault rifles. Because they are against any rules or regulations. And their endgame is to go to war with the US government. (I wish they would).
Are there still some assholes in Newtown arguing against gun control? Seriously? I find that hard to believe.
I for one am shocked that he is extremely racist. I mean he was only in a photo wearing a shit with the Rhodesian and South African flags on them. 2 nations that supported apartheid.
If the roommate knew he was planning the attack for 6 months, shouldn't he have said something to, oh I dunno, the police maybe?
British colonized Rhodesia in the 1890s - it was a racist country then. More than likely, the killer supported those times.
Might have thought it was all talk. Most of these types tend to be cowardly pussies who usually never actually carry out their plans. I bet he cried when he was arrested and realized that he's gonna fry. I was hoping he'd attempt to put up a fight and he'd get filled with lead by the cops I'm sure most wouldn't care if he was killed by the cops. Saves the taxpayers money and it takes away his stage to be an attention whore during his trial.
Last time I checked 60% of the prison population was black. He's gonna spend the remainder of his life in isolation/protective custody. It's a death penalty state so I'm sure it won't be very long in the grand scheme of things.
