The thing about the NRA. They are even against gun checks. So anyone can go into a gun shop or one of those gun shows and just anonymously buy a piece. Even veteran gun enthusiasts (who love their guns) think that this is crazy.

I think this country is producing violent mental illness episodes at a greater rate than the other countries. So the question is what is it about this country that is causing so much violence through mental illness?

Part of it is modeling based upon observations of violence in TV, movies, games, and news reporting.

Other aspects I believe are due to the slow disintegration of moral standards of behavior. Once certain boundaries are crossed, it makes it easier to cross boundaries such as murder.

I tell you what. And I see your point. Lets toss out all of the computers and the assault rifles at the same time. I guess you and the NRA would call this a totalitarian state?

I would say that would be closer to North Korea than USA.

btw, can you please define what an "assault rifle" is?

Sure. It means you can kill at least a hundred people a minute. Just what the doctor ordered for serial killers. For the rest of us: unessential unless you're a member of the KKK.

I am extremely qualified to answer this. Because we have reasonable gun laws that provide law enforcement checks and balances to keep firearms out of the wrong hands. I am the perfect example. I have a a small interest in trying hunting, for me to do so i would need to pass a course on gun control (in ontario it takes an entire weekend, other provinces not sure) then i would need to submit to a full back ground check and have 3 references who also would be back checked. Once this is complete i would receive my long arms license and have access to rifles and shotguns both with "reasonable" ammo limits. i would also then be a national database so if i commit a crime like spousal abuse or a doctor declares me mentally unfit they would take the guns from someone who probably shouldn't have them. It is this extensive effort that has deterred me from "trying" hunting (i'll stick to fishing). Then if one wishes they can take a much longer course and go through a much harsher back ground check to qualify for a handgun license. One must then apply and be granted membership into a gun club at which point they can buy handguns only for the purposes of range shooting. The club is responsible for you and can and will lose their license if you use a handgun unlawfully. The result is way less guns floating around and those that are are kept under lock and key by people who can handle them responsibly.

dude we are a clear outlier. People can blame it on whatever they want, guns, mental illness, I don't care but we are far and away an extreme outlier in the world in terms of mass violence

Well some M-16s can deliver as many as 800 rounds per minute. Is that good enough for you?

They are generally described as containing four or more deaths in one incident, not including the shooter. Some analysts take it and define it further and factor in the surrounding/context some don't. I don't know where the OP got his statistics or even if he was meaning for it to be accurate or just saying that but thats how mass shootings are typically defined.

One thing is for certain - whether you fall on either side of the spectrum regarding Gun Control or not we need more research here. We need to do something about this. 6 of the 12 deadliest public incidents in the history of this country have occurred just since 2007. Last nights heinous crime is not even one of them.

Even if you are against Gun Control there needs to be more research done on this. Even to the depths of what guns have been used? where are these people getting them? What are the demographics of the shooters? etc. grouped together so we can make informed decisions. The problem I have with Gun groups and some gun supporters is not even that they are against gun control but they fight to block research like this from even happening. (probably because the results won't paint their cause in a nice light)

we're a clear outlier in many categories. single parent families, people living in government housing and metropolitan areas to name a few

yes and yet you bring up legislation regarding things like that, measures to fix and research them and it brings about legitimate debate. One even mention of legislation regarding gun violence and gun violence research and you have a huge swath of resistance.
