We're talking about a team that is towards the bottom of the league offensively. A guy like Prado who can play different positions: you can find a place to play him. Our outfield isn't great. And 3rd base. A-ram is limited. I can't see trading Murphy either. He's one of your only true hitters. Although he has occasional slumps his hit totals are way up there. If the Mets are going to be a buyer then they have to take on some money. Teams like the Brewers who are going nowhere are thinking of dumping salaries.
Well the reason we are bottom of the league is partly due to injury and partly due to our immovable players not producing the way they are being paid to. Even though Grandy and Cuddyer aren't horrible, they are below average for what a good team should have offensively from their corner outfielders. So unless we can include them in a trade with prospects for an outfield upgrade , I don't see what player currently available will come in and unseat someone on a regular basis. But if we can get a Prado or Zobrist to platoon with guys at a variety of positions then that could be a good situation.
Irish made a good point: Murph's done at 2nd base. They need Murph's bat for now, but that's another guy that Sandy could get something for from a team in need at the deadline. If they're willing to spend, maybe they can get some bat help for the present. The trades will be to further stock the team, imo. Not necessarily as a move for this years drive. That would be an added bonus. It's not about just this year.
I could see Cuddyer improving but in reality he's a lifetime .270's hitter. Grandy you're stuck with. He keeps getting up around the .250 mark and then he hits a big slide. I don't trade Murphy even though Sandy doesn't want to pay him. His OBP is too low but not near as low as Flores. When you don't have any hitters you don't trade someone who can hit. He's a potential 200 hit a year guy.
Murph might indeed be our best pure hitter but Id hate to lose him for nothing , which we will if he ends the season with us. To me he's our most realistic trade chip and is more valuable to an AL team. If a trade does happen I wonder if we could kill 2 birds with 1 stone and maybe trade him to Oakland for Zobrist and Clippard? Throw in a cheap sweetner like Niese or Montero to make Billy Beane happy cause he probably wouldnt want to pay Murph either , but him and Zobrist make just about the same amount and Murph is 4 years younger.
I wouldn't give him Montero. Zobrist and Clippard I'd have to listen on that one. Murph isn't good enough to be an untouchable. But I wouldn't trade him straight up for a reliever. We need bats over arms.
Only reason I would include Montero is because Clippard is going to receive a lot of trade interest. And seeing how we dont have a setup man he could slide in perfectly. As for bats Oakland has a ton that will most likely be moved. Lawrie and Reddick are two that would be upgrades here but would cost more than Zobrist.
When will Carlos Torres not be on the Mets anymore? I know the bullpen is terrible sans one guy but come on. When Menjia and Goeddel are back hopefully he's outta here.
Good thing for Toronto messing up on the bases or else we probably lose this one. And that would be extra horrible since Harvey pitched a gem. Torres is a complete disaster. He hasnt looked right for awhile now after being very dependent last season. Its really true what they say about bullpen guys in that you never know what you're gonna get from them from year to year.
Fwiw, Meija is returning in July. I was worried about his arm before the suspension, but Terry said his arm is fine and is looking forward to getting Meija back...yet another guy on the way back.
I know we may be getting ahead of ourselves but Meija isn't eligible for the playoffs. But it will be great having him back for the regular season. _
Geez back to no hitting. At least Niese didn't get shelled, maybe we can get something for him. Big picture, gotta say, was very encouraged by Parnell last night, when Mejia comes back, Mejia, Parnell and Familia is a pretty formidable 7th, 8th and 9th. _
Lookin' good there Terry's gotta hold the fort, and continue the juggling act in the meantime. They sent Akeel Morris back down. Hope he's not shell shocked ....and brought up RHP Logan Verrett Hopefully a team desperate for a LHP goin' down the stretch will fork up some goods for Niese I think they moved back Murph's return a couple of days
Former Mets owner Nelson Doubleday passed away this week. He sold his half interest in the Mets to the Wilpons years ago. Now don't you wish it had been the other way around.
Akeel Morris isn't ready for the big leagues. He obviously doesn't have the control needed to be successful in MLB. But he has a live arm and physically with the long legs, etc. He looks like he could be confusing. I guess the reason they brought him up was hoping that if needed he could put the ball over the plate. They knew he can be difficult to hit. He got unraveled. But he looks like a great prospect. Niese's value continues to go up. He's a lefty starter which increases the value for that alone. If he's effective the better. We know that over a period of time he can be up and down.
So Lagares might have a ligament tear in his elbow. Funny how I was thinking to myself before once Murph gets back well nearly be at 100 percent minus Wright. I should've known there's no such thing for the Mets.
This is devastating news but apparently they kind of knew about this in Sept. One option is Tommy John surgery but Sandy says they don't plan on doing it. Terry was asked about it today and said all season long they have gauged Lagares and instructed him not to throw hard unless absolutely necessary. Terry also said don't expect him to make the throws he did last season. Looks like at least for the present he's not going to be IR'd.
