Woah..Faneca was great for us. I don't understand how you can call him a disappointment. He was a tremendous pickup.

Well we can let other people chime in on this. My memory: he wasn't great. He was good but didn't live up to the contract.

So take a $1.6M cap hit by cutting a 23 year old former 1st round pick? What might this accomplish besides getting rid of a player with possible potential?

Sure so they were able to cut him and felt it was the right move at that point. That doesn't mean on the whole he was a bust here at all. It also doesn't mean it was the right move. We replaced him with Duccasse for crying out loud.

The Jets are taking a risk, messing with the chemistry on one of the best lines in the league. But it's too late now. The deed is done. Faneca received the bad news Friday night, a phone call from Ryan while he was out for dinner with Mangold.

I didn't say he was a bust. Just that he didn't live up to his contract. Which for a guard was huge.

They replaced him with Matt Slauson, who got off to a shaky start but ended up being a good player for us.
Vlad was supposed to take Slauson's place and we all know how that worked out...what a waste.

You have selective memory if you ask me. He was the best player anchoring the best running game in the league for two years. Of course he made big boy money, the best at their position usually do. Our line with Faneca ran the best wide trap play in the league, and the fact that we got rid of him for $2 million was silly.

He was one of the few past their prime players that worked out well for us.

He was making about 8 mil per season, 20 guaranteed. They got tired of paying him esp when he started giving up sacks.

4th & 1 @SD in the divisional round, we need a first down to seal the victory. The call is our bread and butter run to Thomas Jones behind a Faneca pull. He tightened up his shoe laces before the play. That play & play call was a perfect reflection of that team - tough, hard nosed, willing to take chances to win games, and arrogant. We're running it right here and you can't fucking stop us.

Faneca was the man for us.

I can't really remember a guard as effective at blasting open holes via a pull play than Faneca especially for the Jets. Mawae was good at if on sweeps, but Faneca was the definition of a road grader.

they made a terrible decision. it was highly questionable at the time, and in retrospect is even worse.

Look I'm not against Faneca. He played one season after that with Arizona and then retired. He even admitted when he signed with AZ that his skills had diminished. His run blocking was good but he was weak on pass blocking. The 8 mil salary was way too high for a guard. That's LT money.

Faneca retired after the 2010 season w/AZ. We had an even better year after he left. I know this is a polarizing topic for Jets fans but I don't think it was a make or break move in the scheme of things overall. Unless he could've made a difference in Pittsburgh in the AFCC...

It's crazy how small these linemen get after they retire and stop taking steroids.

you're changing direction. You said he didn't live up to his time here in NY. He certainly did. The fact he declined and inevitably retired shouldn't be shocking.

I said he was a good player. But didn't play up to his contract. He made 20 mil (his guaranteed money) in two seasons. His pass blocking was not up to that huge salary. He gave up 6.5 sacks his last season with the Jets. Even he admitted his play was below standard for him.

He was a great signing. He instilled an attitude on that offense.

No one should be complaining about him.

So what, football players can lose it very quickly and his skills diminished.

That should not be a negative reflection on what he brought to this team

He was a very very good Jet.

He was great in 2008 and declined (but still good) in 2009. He was still worth every penny because our run game was dominant - he also made Brick and Mangold better players.

You're way too obsessed with stats. It's tough to really qualify sacks for interior lineman versus tackles because they are seldom left in one on one blocking scenarios, and usually have the blitzes coming to the A gap/B gap to their left or right.

You need to try using the eye test buddy. He was dominant while he was here.
