The question is what are Bryce Petty's expectations and what is he willing to do to achieve them?

If he's on the ball and corrects the mistakes he'll make early on the practice field and is coachable and gets the opportunity he will likely live up to his expectations.

I'm pretty sure his expectations are to eventually start, and all reports indicate his willingness is not even in question.

It's really and simply a matter of if he can actually adjust to an NFL offense coming from a spread.

ESPNU is reshowing the Baylor-Michigan St. Cotton Bowl. Petty had 550 yards. Game offensive MVP.

It's the game that sold me on him.

I saw him a bunch of times this year--some great, some bad (WVU) but I always thought he could sling it.

He was outstanding in the bowl game and when I came to realize we weren't getting Marcus, I really wanted Petty. Thought he'd go in the third, surprised he was there in the fourth and very encouraged we traded up to get him, even one spot.

Gonna throw for 10,000 yards, throw 100 TDs, no interceptions, have a perfect QB rating and go straight to the HOF.

Think that's a pretty low ceiling. Surely he can do better.

It's way too early to predict if the guy will even be on the roster after 2 years let alone as a #3, #2 or starter. What I think is the CS is committed to a 2 year development of him then they will assess him after the 2016 season. It's rare that a QB gets to develop for 2 years. I'd love for them to have a continual 2 yr development program in place with guys with upside rather than plug in has-been's with no real shot at ever becoming the starter (Brunell) or guys that will clearly not be anything more than a #3 (Simms, McElory, Clemens etc).

They have Geno under contract the next 2 years and Fitz for this year so 2015 is set. I like that they have flexibility in 2016. If Geno shits the bed again, he's your back up in 2016 and either sign a vet or extend Fitz another year (given the expectation that the Jets win 8-10 games this year and compete for a WC spot they won't be in position to draft a "start immediately" franchise QB in the 2016 draft) so they will need a vet regardless. The question is as a starter or back up for Geno? I also agree that I wouldn't stop with Petty, I'd draft another QB next year depending on where one falls to them.

There's something about Geno Smith that automatically makes you think of Bryce Petty. Sad.

I understand what you're saying.. but some really had him as the best passer in the draft outside of the Jameis and Mariota. I like him as a better passer than Mariota. He just has the poise that look like he'll be good. Only time will tell of course.

Thing is, i don't think it would be that difficult to be crowned the jets franchise QB. We always had a defense that can win us games, just don't turn the damn ball over. We just need somebody that can lead us to a minimum 3 TDs per game and we'd be set. Not saying he has to throw 3 TD's per game, but just make sure our team gets in the endzone at least 3 times. We're constantly holding teams under 20 points, and sadly still can't outscore them. It's sickening.

He has my attention come preseason games....that's for sure. Will make the second half bearable in all 4 games. Wanna make a bet a thread is started that goes something like this?

Anyone want to see Petty get a shot?

Hell...there are already rumblings in Buffalo that Simms will start at some point this year...now that I could see.

  18. I give him a year..as long as he looks better than Tajh Boyd did in both practice & preseason..i can look the other way for the learning experience.I think this 2-3 year talk is crazy. Yes he ran a spread offense in college. So do a lot of college QBs nowawdays. In fact..there's maybe 25 schools TOPS in all of "Bowl series" CFB that run a pro style offense.Maybe it's the NFL coaches that need to adjust alittle in their teaching methods & not as much the player. He has a big arm,has leadership & fits Chan Gailey's scheme...we should have an idea of what he is next year training camp.

Petty getting a shot stands a chance of happening, albeit a lower one.

60% sure Smith is the guy week 1, 35% on Fitz passing him, leaving Petty 5%. they brought in Fitzpatrick for a reason, i believe them when they say they want Petty to sit.

he'd have Russ Wilson the crap outta the preseason to justify letting him start, or else something terribly wrong has occurred.
