I find your point interesting, because I feel like Mo is the type of guy who would take a fair contract to stay here. I'm not saying he's gonna take some big cut, but let's say, for arguments sake, the raiders are offering 13 a year and the jets 12, I can see him staying here instead of starting over, away from his family, in an unfamiliar place.

That's a big part of the problem. Say the Jets are offering him $10 million a year. Every agent is going to drill into his head that he can get significantly more on the open market.

It's not as cut and dry as oh they're offering me a couple million less but I want to stay local. I also know that he's 25 years old. It's not like we're dealing with. 30, 31 year old player that could have children as old as 10 years old not wanting to move schools. I don't know about his family but I know a 3 year old doesn't know the difference whereas a 25 year old ball player can definitely see the different is $3 million a year or even $1.5 million a year. That's why Rivers is in such a sticky spot because he has 27 children.

 

I may be stating the obvious but we just handed out $36mm in contracts to free agents from other teams and Harris and now we have the 5th LEAST amount of cap space in the NFL. Any deal from us would have to be back end loaded - why would a team like the jaguars with $36mm in cap space this year or the Raiders with $21mm only be able to offer $1-2 more than us?

 

It's a hypothetical question. Also next year can technically not matter since we can tag him

Mo holding out would be a good business move for him. The Jets D is severely downgraded with #96 off the field. It puts the team in a tough bind comparable to when Revis held out.

Glad Mo has chose to put his team/playing football first over getting paid.

Who says Wilkerson has no money after he retires? He could have easily banked away 15 million (conservative number) and be earning a guaranteed 3% interest. He could be pulling in 450K a year and not ever touch his 15 million. (Hypothetical)

These players aren't stupid in the sense that they understand that all they have is football and once that's over there's nothing more they're going to be able to do to earn money.

The reality is that most 25 year old players realize this is it for them and they need to make as much money as possible in ten years before they have no salary anymore.
