I don't really know what to expect of him. He was a beast in college but that doesn't always translate in the NFLNFL

My hopes are he becomes a solid starter for years to come. I don't need him to be hall of fame caliber, but be a good enough qb that we know we can rely on to help contend for the playoffs on yearly basis. Like a Eli Manning type(not expecting 2 superbowls)

That will probably never happen tho. He will probably never amount to anything and forgotten like the Rattlifs and Bollingers who have been on the roster in the past

I think he can be a successful NFL QB. I also think that his transition to an NFL QB is being sped up by the coaching staff implementing a spread offense for Geno's benefit. By them using alot of the same offensive terminology and schemes that Geno and Bryce both used in college it will allow Petty to be ready faster than if he was trying to transition to more of a Pro Style offense. I have read some of the articles posted about Gailey's Offenses and what he plans to do with the Jets and it sounds extremely similar to the offense that Petty ran at Baylor. There is no question that Bryce understands how to run a spread offense since Baylor was the #1 offense in college football both years that Bryce was the starter.

This. Chan will work around both QB's strengths (which are pretty similar). Only edge Geno would have over Bryce is NFL experience and mobility. Watching Petty run is an awful sight to see lol!

Too early to tell what Bryce Petty will be. I think he has all the tools, but he has never ran an NFL style offense. The best thing for him is to be brought along slow. He probably wont play after the preseason, as a matter of fact, he may not even dress after the preseason.

So 2/3's of the people expect him to be a franchise QB? No wonder we always end up so disappointed we can't even set expectations to a reasonable level. The guy is an established 4th round project. Expecting him to be a bust or a franchise player pre-training camp in his rookie year is insane.

Those are the only 3 options???....star QB, backup, or bust?! What about the most likely answer, that he will become an average starting QB?

I like Bryce Petty but I don't think it's realistic to expect to him to get the job after one year. Of course, he'll probably thrown in the starting lineup by October.

He is a 4th round pick, so I'm not sure what constitutes a bust. If he were a 1st round pick and became a back-up QB, that would be a bust. However, he is a 4th round pick, if turned out to be a 2nd stringer, would that be a bust?

If a 4th round QB turns into a good backup QB that is a success not a bust. If he turns into an average back up QB that's a good pick not a bust. If he doesn't work out at all its no big deal. If he turns into a superstar its a steal. It can never be a bust.

When I think of franchise QB's, I think of the Peyton Mannings and Aaron Rodgers of the world. I would say there are only about 8-10 franchise QB's in the NFL right now. I guess we have a different definition of what a franchise QB is. To me, every team has a starting QB, but not every team has a true franchise QB.

Agreed. Joe Flacco and Eli Manning are both franchise QBs, neither are talked about in the same breath as Peyton and Rodgers.

Let him sit for a year. If the season turns out to be a disaster let him start the final 2-3 games to get his feet wet.

Petty hasn't ran a NFL style offense, but everything I have read states the Jets won't even be running a NFL style offense. They are going to run a version of the Spread offense and he has run that style offense his entire career. The terminology and schemes will all be familiar. the only thing he will have to get accustomed to is the speed difference and smaller windows for passing. I have no doubt that Petty can succeed in that setup. I would be much more cautious in my predictions if he was transitioning to a traditional pro style offense.

I voted franchise QB because it would solve a lot of problems in Jetland if it turned out that way.

So far here is what I am thinking:

    Ceiling - Matt Simms
    Floor - Geno Smith

Back issue? I hadn't heard of that. What's the scoop?

I have zero doubts about his ability to learn an NFL playbook. He's smart, disciplined and a hard worker. He seems to have good vision and instincts. When coupled with his hard work and intelligence, he should be able to learn to read NFL Ds. I think he has a real chance to develop.

Like you, I have no expectations for him this year on the football field. My only expectations are that he learn the offense, make whatever fundamental/technique issue tweaks or changes he needs to make, adapt to the speed of the NFL, and hopefully, start demonstrating that he has the ability to read NFL Ds and make good decisions.

Back injury in one of the first games last year. Had the toughness to finish it out, I believe. Don't remember if he sat any games out but if he did it was only one or two.
