This is the exact type of comment that makes mac users look like idiots to the rest of the world. Please, do not turn our thread of Mac ass kicking machines into an open debate of Mac vs PC. If you'd like, please start a thread on "Building my Dream Mac-hine". (see what I did there?) Where the 1st post is clicking the Sucker ...I mean "buy" button on a fully overpriced system.... and then configuring it to work with everything windows.... Thx GD! Yea, I touched on the HDD prices. The flooding absolutely killed the market in terms of pricing. Good thing I had a couple of SATA III HDD's I bought over a year ago in another system... I've done a few tests, clocked it to a measly 4ghz. I must say, It's pretty badass. I'm going to be installing all my production software over the next week and that'll be my real test...
Macs get viruses all the time, but because they are Windows viruses, they dont do anything. Most macs dont even have antivirus protection. Unix was designed for security in networking, Windows was built off DOS designed to run off a floppy disk. Its like trying to tell a fisher to design a bridge. Sure it can do it but theres almost 100% chance that there will be a screwup somewhere, and there was. That was the Windows security. Somehow even in Windows7 they never fixed it, unless they have by now?
I personally not a fan of Windows, I do have a few PC's dual booting Windows/Linux. I got a few Linux netbooks and a Imac.
Just a Quick UD on my rig. absolutely amazing... and It takes a lot for me to say that because I am a fukin anal bitch when it comes to builds. Bootup time on SSD is ridiculous along with programs opening hella quick and deleting 1000 e-mails is instantanious. Also, Running Photoshop, My Video Editing programs and of course my music production is quick and quite flawless. Having multiple applications running and with youtube, email running , I mean really impressed so far. I have a minor O'C upto 4.4 just for a small boost but honestly, it's the 32GB of ram that has me pretty much flying through things and I always build for the future so I can get 128GB of ram when I need it. Hello Ramdisk! Also, I just ordered a 4TB WD HDD. I just couldn't wait for the Prices to get to where they were. (Honestly, I think it's bullshit.) As I found the 2TB Black for $152 @ B&H but the 4TB is quicker and It only takes up 1 spot. Once the HD comes, I will (Finally) be setting up a raid set on a couple of SATAII Drives I have in here. til the next. How did I miss this  wow, ISA slots...holy shit...brings back memories Nice dude:beer:
I'm still on the Dell XPS M1530...5 years now and it has vertical black bars coming from the bottom...
Overclocking and PC Cooling... I OC'd my proc to 4.8Ghz and the temp at rest was 26C. I converted a 1.5gb avi file to mp4. My proc load shot up to 98% and my temps ran between 88 - 96C. luckily I was able to finish the conversion in 5mins. Case ventilation is non-standard as well. I have two 120mm fans at the top of the case configured as intakes. One of those fans cools a Corsair H60 CLC. I have 3 small intake fans in the front of the case and a single 120mm exhaust fan in the rear of the case. The side of the case has vent opening which I use passively. I backed down the OC to 4.5ghz and the at rest temps came in at 25C. Results: Careful when you Overclock. You never know just how much thermal headroom you have. In case anyone is interested, this is the program I use to measure proc temps. http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/SysInfo/Real_Temp/
Since this thread popped up.... let me ask you what's been on my mind. I'm not a gamer -- Civ3 for the last 10+ years is about the extend of my interest. My son however is, and he is talking about PS4. I don't particularly mind -- the grades are decent and the puberty hit not too harshly But got me thinking about gaming in general. So, sorry for naivette, is there a gaming "super-system"? Not in terms of video driver and resolution (I'm a caveman when it comes to this), this info would just go over my head. Is there a VR system. You know, like they have in movies -- you get goggles, wiry gloves and now you're inside the game, looking at your hands holding M16? Sorry if in the wrong thread -- didn't want to open a new one for this.
Right thread but I'm not sure we have anyone who's VR ready just yet. It is still bleeding edge Tech.
just increased my RAM from 16gb to 32gb. It certainly feels faster although I'm not sure if I could quantify that. I'm running 1866 instead of 1600 too. Can't wait for Win10.
That much RAM shouldn't help all that much unless you're doing intensive multi-threading or virtualization. Or maybe you just have an ungodly amount of internet tabs open.
I do a lot of video rendering and converting. Especially with HD video to Mp4 conversions. Still doesn't go much over 5% usage on the RAM depending on which app I'm using to do the conversions.
