I don't have a problem with people defending Geno, in fact I've done so myself in detail in other threads, but I think Bucky Brooks is overtly wrong in multiple aspects of his analysis. He repeatedly refers to Geno as a quarterback who thrives in "quick rhythm passes" and my research and tape study has found the exact opposite to be true. He's had intense struggles when asked to get the ball out of his hands quickly, but has been dramatically better when allowed to hold onto the football and make downfield reads. It seems to me that this is in large part due to his inability to instantly diagnose and react to linebackers in coverage over the middle of the field. Think about on how many occasions you've seen a linebacker bat away a pass on a mid-field route or pick it off. I don't have the numbers, but I'd bet that the majority of his interceptions have gone into the hands of linebackers or box safeties. According to Pro Football Focus, in 2013 Geno was the 44th out of 44 ranked quarterbacks when releasing the ball in 2.0 seconds or less. He was the 44th out of 44 rated quarterbacks when releasing the ball in 2.1 to 2.5 seconds. He did, however, jump up to being the 13th rated quarterback when allowed to hold onto the ball for 2.5-3.0 seconds. (https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2014/06/16/qbs-in-focus-time-to-throw/). This is not quick rhythm passing; this is a result of looking for throws deep down the field and/or improvising and finding open receivers once the play breaks down. Brooks also claims that Geno thrives on 3 step drops as a result of his propensity to throw quick "rhythm" passes. However, he was ranked 35th out of 37 qualifying quarterbacks when taking a 3 step drop and ranked dead last on 5 step drops. He jumped up to 15th in the league when taking a 7 step drop (https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2014/06/07/qbs-in-focus-drop-back-depth/). As far as his claim that Geno is better when throwing in breaking routes? Strike three for Brooks. Geno was ranked 8th in the NFL when throwing the "Out" route and dead last in the NFL when throwing the "In" route. He was also 4th in the NFL when throwing the "Corner" route (another out breaking route). His arm strength makes him a better candidate for outside throws. He got absolutely torn to shreds on "Post" routes (in-breaking) and "Comebacks", 3rd worst in the NFL in both. (https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2014/06/17/qbs-in-focus-by-route/). Here's why I think Geno's struggles in his first 2 years have been so intense: he succeeds when he is allowed to keep the ball in his hands for an extended period of time and throw deep down the field. However, when a quarterback has shown a tendency to turn the ball over and put the team in jeopardy, the coaching staff becomes afraid to put the ball in his hands. As a result, Geno was forced to become a quarterback which he is not; a quick rhythm passer. Marty and Rex made a concerned effort to get the football out of his hands as quickly as possible before he had a chance to screw things up. Unfortunately, this merely placed a greater emphasis on the areas in which Smith struggles, while negating the aspects of his game which are strengths. When forced to making quick decisions and throw short, in breaking routes, Geno flopped. Ultimately it's on him to earn the coaching staff's trust (what sensible coach would allow a struggling quarterback to throw down the field?) but at the same time, Marty could have been much more accommodating to his skill set. At the end of the day, though, this article by Bucky Brooks makes no sense to me whatsoever, I don't know if he and I were watching the same tape or analyzing the same stats. I agree with his decision to endorse Smith but the manner in which he chose to do so perplexes me.
Wow. Mrs. Smith maybe you should settle down a little. It's cute that you have such support for your son though..
Over the last 4 games of last season, Geno was the 2nd highest rated QB in the NFL (P. Manning). In both games against NE, Geno outplayed Brady based on yards, TDs, and completions (this may be due to the fact Brady routinely has his worst games of the season against Ryan's D). Jets lost both NE games by a combined total of 3 points, including an overtime loss. At the end of the day, Geno has had enough terrible games for fans to want him gone. But he's also had enough good games where if we're forced to start him, there is at least some hope.
This isn't QBR but passer rating. QBR goes from 0-100 with 50 being average, while passer rating has a perfect score at 158.3. Geno Smith last year ranked 29 out of 33 QBs in passer rating with an average score of 77.5. To crack the top 20, he would have needed to average a score of 86.4 (Kaepernick). To be considered a top 10 QB, he would've needed to average a score of 95.0 (Wilson). Saying Geno Smith played 7 great games last year is wrong IMO when only 3 games would have cracked the top 10. EDIT: forgot the link I used http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/player/_/stat/passing/sort/quarterbackRating
I wish people would get the information right. You say QBR, but show passer rating. These numbers are based off passer stats, the quarterback position is much more, and Geno's QBR is much,, much worse. Smith's has had the worst QBR (35.4) of all NFL starting QBs the last two seasons. Sanches held that distinction the two previous years. Take a look HERE. espn.go.com/nfl/qbr
Geno's talent should never be in question, it's his decision making that needs to improve. The intangibles are there, he makes all the throws you need your QB to make, that's why you don't just give up on the kid. The Jets surrounded Geno with talent on offense for the 1st time since he's been the starting QB, let's see what the kid does with it.
Phenomenal post. This is what certain posters who (I think and hope) were recently banned thought they were. I'm actually in the camp that thinks Geno can improve in this offense, but regardless, these numbers are eye-opening to say the least. It's kind of hard to put a ton of weight on them though considering how much of a mess he's been surrounded with the past two years. I still value them though. Thank you. This board needed a post like this after the recent garbage that's been spewed.
Eggzactlee. We saw Smith play well at toward the end of 13, after that season had been tanked by awful play by him. Heading into 14, the pom pom wavers like the OP expected a huge upgrade. Instead we saw him tank another season, with an overall record even lower. Sure, when the other team has already picked ou the islands they are going to, probably already gone to the driving range, stocked up their liquor cabinets, sure, then Smith decides he's going to show everyone what a great Qb he actually is. What's going to change that pattern?
I'm interested to see him with Gailey. He has the supporting cast, so now he needs to put up or shut up. Given Geno's tiny improvement lol, we might finally have a 60% passer. If he could do that, and put up 18-20 TD's with 12 INT's I would be encouraged. If he cant manage those numbers with this cast around him, he shuoldnt be a starter.
If gailey could make kordell, thigpen and Fitz into viable if unspectacular starters, Geno has a shot. He has shown he has the talent. Up to him to get this head on straight. /thread
I was lurking while I was away and there was some seriously funny shit posted. Not the ha-ha funny type, mind you. _
