Yeah, all along the thinking is we will sign Mo after last season, then after free agency hits, then after the draft....now it's looking less and less likely this year.
Give him more money upfront, save on the backend. With a 31 year old, physical top end receiver, that's a smart move.
it's a flat out raise.... don't understand why they did this. big part of the allure in trading for Marshall was that he WASN'T making 9.5M............now he is. doesn't make sense.
You know it's obvious one even Cimini has the answer: And on top of that, like I said, he's a 31-year-old physical receiver… Two years from now he's probably not going to be the same guy. This way you don't have to cut him and you could save some money while rostering him.
so it was a predetermined raise at the time of the trade. that makes a little more sense, although i don't think it was necessary to agree to that. understand your point regarding salaries trending down with age. that's something i'd like to see more of as well. In Marshall's case, i think he's here only 1 to 2 years regardless though. don't expect any backend 'savings' on this.
It seems like they're trying to save money when they might be ready to cut him by paying him more when they know that they are not cutting him (and we don't need anymore cap flexibility this year). Truly not a big deal just moving dollars around in this situation.
Didn't they say this was pre-agreed when they made the trade. But they couldn't restructure the contract until after sometime in mid May because of league rules. btw one guy who really used to kick his ass was Revis. He shut him down or held him to little on the field. Revis was just mentally superior to Marshall even though physically Marshall is a beast.
It's hush money to not spoil the surprise trade of the summer when we deal Wilkerson to Chicago for Eeyore Cutler and a 1st round pick in 2016.
I don't think it's a big deal it's not busting our cap and it won't hurt our cap down the line. I view Marshall as a good stop gap at the position.
The guy is an all pro in his prime and the #1 WR that we have not had in a long time. How is that just a stop gap?
It really doesn't,How do you give a guy a raise without playing a single down .One thing we know about Mac for sure is that he isnt afraid of spending money
Wonder if he's getting a bonus to be nice to Geno? No, but really - This is a non issue. If they had to agree to this prior to the trade I'm 100% ok with that. There is still very little guaranteed money on the back end of his contract which means it will cost us nothing to get rid of him. If this keeps him happy and helping the team I'm all for it. Also, Just a thought regarding Mo - while I still believe there is still a lot of ways that they could get Mo figured out this might be indicative of whether it happens this year or next or , with Mo as young as he is I, wouldn't be surprised to see a much more back loaded contract with plenty of guarantees. He knows this is the place he wants to play; This unit is going to be amazingly scary. He's always said he wants to be a JET for life. So, at this point, I'm down to see if he'll put his $$ where his mouth is. Take a shot for the team this year, Get paid for your career? .02
If we get three solid years out of him and he drags this dogshit offense kicking and screaming into the playoffs I think he is more than just a stop gap.
