Interesting. What makes you think that? I hadn't thought of that possibility. I'm not saying you're not right, just hadn't thought of that angle.
Just the fact that Gailey feels so confident in naming Geno Smith, HIS guy to an extent per his presser. He hasn't really mentioned Fitzpatrick all that much. I just have this assumption that Geno Smith is his project and he wants to make Geno Smith a competent QB.
This is true, but did Gailey really have to say what he said in that presser? It reminds me of Marty when he was here, he wanted to give Geno every opportunity to succeed as if he was his project. I know Geno was drafted when Marty came here - but I just get this idea of him being a project he can fix.
OK, fair enough. I'm not sure I can still see that, but it's possible, I guess. I'm sure that he wants to make Geno a competent QB. Not only would that be best for the team, but would show what a great QB Coach and OC Gailey is. He knows Fitz and his limitations. Fitz hasn't practiced much, so there's not been a lot to say at this point. He may just be trying to boost Geno's confidence and let Geno know that he believes in him, although others don't. Since Geno has been the starter the last two seasons, it should be his job to lose. Gailey may have just been stating the obvious...i.e, until Fitz can practice, it's Geno's job, as there's no competition now because Simms was gonna be cut and Petty and the UDFA (Heaps) they signed are rookies. Then when TC opens, it's Geno's job to lose or hold.
I think Geno will need to light it up to keep his job. It will be completely performance based, no more constant 3 and outs, no scoring less then 17 points.
You will be a youtube sensation in hours, just remember if you get million + views, I get some of that cash too bro.
@RichCimini: For the Geno Smith fans: Good thing we didn't chart passing stats today. Wouldn't be pretty. #nyj I really hope he turns things around this season, if not its going to be a long season
Imagine if Gailey DOES fix Geno. He'd instantly become "The Qb Whisperer". Gailey would have his crowning achievement and could most likely return to semi-retirement after naming his successor on the Jets. Gailey could write his own ticket as he would be the #1 candidate on most teams' short list of OC/Qb coaches. I hadn't entertained this possibility but it does make sense. The dark side of course is that MM thought he could fix Geno too. That didn't end well either due to a lack of talent in the Wr corps or the Qb or both. We'll see this year unless the Jets drag the great Geno experiment into '16.
When Bowles said Geno will face competition what he meant was Geno will throw left handed one day, right handed the next.
It's every OC's dream to fix a talented QB with consistency issues. It would indeed be his crowning achievement. I am sure he knows where he stands with Fitzpatrick, if he can untap the potential of Geno Smith - then well, it gives Gailey and this Jets team another shot at a ring and big time recognition. We aren't letting Gailey go anywhere if he can help Geno Smith become a good QB.
This makes absolutely NO sense. Any true evaluator of the game easily sees that the guy has plenty of potential on the field. As I said Gailey maybe able to get the best out of Geno.
No clue to be honest. Maybe he carves his own name in Jets history, I doubt it but hey one can dream.
