Last year at this time nobody wanted to fire Idzik. Although there was plenty of pro Rex propaganda. So we'll see what happens if we have another 4-12. Esp after the guy spent almost the whole cap. But I can imagine.

agree, Mac's impact will be clearer over time.
he had a lot to work with this offseason, but Idzik had that and more last offseason (including 12 draft picks).

I'm optimistic on Mac, based on how he's approaching things:

    1) a GM philosophy with an emphasis on scouting.
part of his pre-req on taking this job, was the Jets commitment to increasing the resources invested towards the scouting dept. the overhaul has already begun.

    2) he understands the importance of both long and short term, youth and vets
it's not all about building a team of under 25's, towards some ideal 5 year plan. things move too quickly for that in the NFL. let the youth grow through competition, by learning how to win, and by watching how these vets conduct themselves on and off the field.

    3) he's bringing in the type of players his coaching staff needs
our secondary was dreadful, our new HC (and old) emphasizes that secondary to make their defenses click, so he spends majority of resources to fix that situation, based on the need and the value available on the market

    4) he's aggressive, and certainly not acting like a rookie GM
trades, FA, moving both up and down in the draft to get the most value possible

    5) the draft.
we won't know how all these guys pan out for awhile, but by filling out roster prior to draft, he stuck with a value approach based on how board fell. and as mentioned in previous post, he moved up and down, and made trades.......rather than standing pat.
i'm not confident in all of the picks, but am confident in the approach, and the fact that none of the picks will have to start right away. they are part of the longer term plan.

I'm encouraged by all of these things, in just one offseason with Mac.
with Idzik, i didn't see any of that, and it was really disappointing after having some hopes for him early on..

The reason Mac's so popular is because he immediately spent the money. Plus he's not John Idzik, public enemy no. 1 thanks to Mehta, Cimini and a gullible fan base who listens to those two assholes. Mac brought back two popular players even though he had to greatly overpay for both of them. btw something NEP was unwilling to do (for Revis-there is no way they were going to give him 20 mil) Fans don't care about economics they only want big stars. It's just like Sonny Werblin said. But so far only one key player re-signed in Harris. And a lot of the cap is spent. Don't get me wrong: I love having Revis back. IMO he's the best ever Jet player and will add a lot to our overall defense. We needed smart leadership back there and I hope he's right when he said he's better than ever. If I overpay for a player I'd rather do it for him. For the Jets he has more upside than any D player in the league. But to blame Idzik for Revis when all the evidence points to Woody. It's a joke. And now the new guy gets all the credit. Put it this way: we got Revis plus the picks Idzik got in return.

You are too harsh on the fans. Unlike Idzik, Mac knows he has to win now, this is the NFL after all. Now if you look at the front office's signings this year, you'll notice that most of them are cuttable after 2 years. This gives the perfect timetable to see which of our rookies and young vets develop. What I like about Mac is that he understands that he can't put off his plans for two years like Idzik has done, hoping that in year 3 it will all come together. He also seems like a true scouting guy, unlike Idzik, who simply liked rookies because they were cheap. I also think Idzik would have done something dumb like sent Harris packing without a viable replacement.

Idzik did similar kinds of things that Mac is doing. He brought in an experienced back up Qb. He signed Decker. He re-signed vets like Pace and brought in inexpensive role players like Babin, etc. They both even signed Seattle O-linemen. His trades were good ones esp the Ivory trade. He signed Chris Johnson. And got Harvin. He did things but overall many were good moves but just didn't work. Rex of course via his leaks tried to push the blame all on Idzik. There was the lack of corners and he tried to sign the two best ones but it came back to bite him. The criticism of his drafts is a joke. Every team bypasses a good player but he gets zero credit for the good ones. And with guys like Pryor and Milliner still too early to evaluate. He was trying to rebuild the secondary via the draft not ignore it. These two guys could be the cornerstone for a great defensive backfield.

"Idzik did similar things that Mac is doing"?????

Please stop right there. Idzik did know how to trade up, down, or sideways on Draft day.

Yes, his FA moves like Decker, Pace, Babin, and getting Harvin were not bad.

But missing on one the most important positions come DD (QB) is inexcusable. We got Jace Amaro and Pryor at the expense of maybe getting Bridgewater,Carr, Bortles, Mettenberger . A great QB class.

In hindsight that could be a blunder that will haunt us in adding to our QB pool for years to come especially if we do better this year and miss out grabbing a blue chip '16 QB to compete with Petty.

Have Idzik manage your fantasy team, I will take Mac.

He drafted Geno. Who played well at the end of 2013. He looked better. You can't judge a rookie Qb on their first 12 games. So it was understandable not to draft a Qb like Carr or Teddy. Plus how did anyone know these guys both passed over by many teams would have successful rookie years. Of course Geno sucked in 2014 except again at the end of the season. Look, Mac looks like a good GM. Btw Bortles had a very poor rookie season.

I'm by no means going to be an Idzik excuse maker, but I'm going to look at this from a broader perspective, and not let my emotions get involved.

Mac is doing a good job, because he was allowed to do what Idzik should have been able to do, bring in his own team and no meddling from the owner.

With the exception of the HC, Woody sat back and allowed MAC to do his job with no interference from anyone else including the HC.

In my opinion the previous regime FO and CS was dysfunctional and the product on the field reflected that disfunction.

It was not just Idzik, everyone in that admin played a part in the circus that became the jets organization. Unfortunately the ringleader still owns the team, I just hope that he has learned from his mistakes and let's the capable men he has hired run the show.

So gun pointed to your head right now you guys would choose Idzik for GM if you had the choice between him and Mac??

Woody owns the Jets and even now he is involved. Bowles and Mac have to thank him for a job

Point is Woodward will be always meddling IMO.

Idzik just sucked as a GM with or without the politics. Mac has done more good in a few months than Idzik in years; how many Drafts did Idzik Ace....oh I guess the one where we got Geno

    I wont miss the guy

I think Woody has learned from some of his previous mistakes. Yes, he did spend time alongside Mac looking for coaches, but at least this time he had the GMs buy-in. He didn't force a coach on the guy and I think this was just a one time thing since many head coaches were getting hired quickly and they needed to get someone good even though the ink on Mac's contract hadn't even dried yet.

The truth is Idzik did all of the groundwork on Harris's new contract. And it was his plan to use a good chunk of that money to re-sign star players http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/20...new_contract_before_john_idzik_was_fired.html.

So it looks thus far as pretty much locks as starters for us include:

    Calvin Pryor
    Sheldon Richardson
    Oday Aboushi
    Jace Amaro
    Geno Smith

This does not include McDougal/Milliner who will see time in the secondary and Dakota Dozier as the possible swing 6th lineman.

Idzik wasn't given enough time because the fan base and ownership had a quick hook. You could've hired the cheapest man in the world and he would've had to throw big money at free agents this year which was obviously Idzik's plan.

He certainly did some things wrong in possibly forcing Rex's hands in playing certain players when he wanted him to. His drafts are really not that bad. Who do people suggest we pick instead of Milliner at #9? You know this entire fan base would've thrown a shit fit with a guard at #9 who are really the only formidable players that came out of that draft other than Richardson so far.

People blaming him for not signing Revis; Woody hired a GM who heavily emphasized not resigning Revis and Woody wanted a guy who didn't want to bring him back. There were tons of articles on it at the time.

He wasn't perfect but he wasn't the villain people make him out to be and truly wasn't given enough time; 2 years is not enough time for any GM in any sports (maybe basketball).

Mac is doing a good job because he is allowed to? and Idzik did a terrible job because he wasn't allowed to?
c'mon, as much as I like to take a jab at Woody myself, that's a cop out excuse for Idzik.

Woody wasn't telling him to save money last offseason, or how to negotiate deals. He wasn't telling him to ignore Revis call. He wasn't telling him who to sign and who not to. He wasn't telling him to ignore the needs of the coaches. He wasn't telling him who to draft.
that's on Idzik as the GM.

and if you do have an owner meddling, it's still the GM's job to have the balls to stand up and disagree where he feels it detrimental to the team.
Woody is nowhere near the strong presence of Jerry, and yet Jerry's staff insisted they draft Martin instead of Manziel. and Jerry's the GM!
there's no way Woody was bullying Idzik into what to do, or what not to do.

The biggest faux pas by Idzik was not being able to communicate with the press and the public. He made enemies of the press by not giving them information. And his answers to their questions were robotic. You can't get away with this if you're GM of a New York franchise. You have to give them something. Plus he was dealing with a press that was totally on the side of Rex Ryan (who did give them stories and good ones) and Rex wanted Idzik to immediately spend more of the cap space (because he knew he had to win in 2014). I don't think Idzik was trying to sabotage him, just trying to build a team and not spend all of their money the first year. The final blow was his embarrassing presser. He was totally out of his element and laid an egg big time. I think with the pressure on Woody, the 4-12 and finally that presser he made up his mind to cut ties with Idzik even though he was probably on board with his long term plan. PS he brought in role players like Babin plus other potential starters in Bohannon, Breno, Ivory and Winters.

Look do you really believe this. That Woody wasn't interfering and that Idzik on his own was intentionally not spending money. During the interviewing process how many reports did we read that Woody was turned down by prospective GMs like David Caldwell because of all the conditions he put forth that they didn't want to deal with. Idzik accepted his conditions and got the job.http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...-york-jets-cant-give-away-general-manager-job

I guess you totally ignored the part where I blamed everyone for the circus the jets became.

Do you not recall what Woody did different this time? He went out and hired true football people, Wolf and Casserly. I'm sure they sat him down and told him that it was imperative to let the GM do his job and allow him to bring in his own people something that Idzik was not allowed to do.

The GM is not the only cog in the draft room, Bradway and his minions helped put together the draft board, thats why I blamed everybody for the debacle that was the jets draft, even though they might get 6 startes from that draft.

I also don't recall Todd Bowles being allowed to select a player with a gimme pick like it was some kind of Price is Right Plinko game. Mac also had conditions that Woody had to meet in order for him to take the job, he needed to add money to the player scouting department.

As far as GM Jones is concerned, he has had the same point man since the 90s, I think his name is Steve or Stephen, so to validate your point a gm should be able to tell the owner that they need to go in a different direction when he needs to, I don't believe a 2nd year GM has the same clout as a 25 year GM who has a good track record.

The jets overpaid for the mercenary, don't make it sound like Mac got him back at a lesser cost because of his love for the Jets, I'm sure if someone offered him more money he would be wearing their colors in OTA.

Just to be clear, I'm glad that Idzik and Rex both landed on their feet again, I don't wish anyone ill will, but that dynamic just proved unsuccessful with the Jets, and I'm very happy where the jets are now.
