Say it ain't so? John Idzik has recived a promotion already to assistant GM.A dark day for whatever Jaguars fans still exist http://nypost.com/2015/05/28/john-idzik-impresses-jaguars-gets-promotion/
Very happy to see: he earned it. Because he got the shaft here. He set the groundwork for improving the team long term. And got blamed for everything by front runners. We'll see in the next year or two just how bad his drafts were.
Maybe they can set Idzik up with a scout with some good evaluation skills. Idzik had a pretty sound strategy, but his execution was poor. Imagine if Macagagnan had 12 picks this year? Could have been a great opportunity.
Look, the 12 picks, half of them were compensation picks in the higher rounds. Non-tradeable. Yes, I think he should have traded back (the ones he could deal) into 2015. Because there was no way all 12 could make the roster. When they tried to PS some of the guys, three of them were picked up by other teams and played on their active rosters. So for higher round picks they were considered by other teams NFL players. The complaints about choosing the wrong wide receiver was a big deal over nothing: according to reports he would have drafted Watkins or Beckham but they were chosen by other teams before the Jets. They took a safety and a guy highly regarded who still could end up being a long time starter. This guy is no Kyle Wilson, he's a lot better player than that. The Wrs who had some success were 3rd or 4th round picks and none of them had over 40 receptions. They were good players, but no big deal. And two of the receivers taken in the 4th and 5th rounds are still in the organization. If they are that bad why not cut them now.
We had 4 compensation picks. Others could have been traded. But that isnt the point. He passed on Teddy. He released a 4th round pick super early, and then that player had success in NO. He didnt address WR until it was much too late. We could have easily packaged the tradeable picks and moved up. "When they tried to PS some of the guys, three of them were picked up by other teams and played on their active rosters." That isnt an endorsement for Idzik. That is a mistake. If you have to PS that many of your draft picks, try and move up so three of your players cant just sign with other teams for nothing Jets had ammunition to move around and get the guys they wanted. Imagine if they had taken Bridgewater, Jordan Matthews and traded up for Amaro? They could have traded a 3rd, a 4th and a 6th and still had 9 picks. Idzik would still be employed here. I liked his strategy, but he had a poor draft.
Nobody knows for sure if he would have done a good job or not with the salary cap space he created for rhe Jets. I think he will do well in Jax. The Jags already have their draft people (who I think have done pretty well the last two years). His job is going to be focused on contracts and cap functions. He's definitely good with that stuff.
His draft is an incomplete. And considering he selected the best player in 2013 at overall 13 you can give him a pass on a couple of 5th rounders. Why he cut Saunders, I don't know. There could have been off the field issues surrounding him. He had a car accident. But the 2 or 3 wide receivers taken by Philly (Mathews) etc you can point that out for every team. Passing on a player who was better than his draft slot. If Pryor who graded better than he looked turns out to be a starter and has a career and maybe better than that his 2014 draft doesn't look that bad. It's too early to give it a bad grade especially when he was given C pluses to Bs by the experts. And Buff overpaid for Watkins. And the Giants weren't going to trade Beckham to the Jets. PS almost every team passed on Teddy who still isn't a slam dunk but looked good. And we had just drafted a Qb pretty high who had finished his rookie year on a high note. Plus most rookie Qbs aren't great and the Jets were 8-8.
one thing is for sure.....if Idzik was still with the Jets, Revis would still be with the Pats.. i'm pretty damn glad he's gone. no way could i watch him botch another FA period or draft.
Not necessarily true. If Woody told him to sign him he'd of done it. And if Woody told him not to sign him (like as speculated in 2014 even though Idzik took the blame and the owner let him hang dry) he didn't sign him. And when he traded Revis: look at the compensation. A 1st and a 4th. For all your bellyaching about that we ended up with Richardson, not bad esp for an injured player. It didn't help the Bucs much. And was part of the reason their GM was fired.
We had a shit load of money last season. Woody didn't tell him to save it, or to not sign Revis. He wanted to come here, and ended up helping the Pats. that's on Idzik. this season......he would have low balled (his common theme) and Revis would still be on that Pats. i think after low balling and missing again on FA's this year, he would have had to resort to massively overpaying B level prospects just to hit the minimum floor requirements on cap spending. a train wreck i didn't want to see again.. and then there's the draft..
Look - we'll never know what Idzik's long term plans were but it sure seems like he was looking at things long term and didn't put enough emphasis on the short term. I hope everyone realizes that all the FA moves the new front office was able to do this year were a result of the groundwork Idzik had done in the previous two years. He would have had to have spent the money this year too. It's a fucking league rule. How he would have gone about it no one will ever know, but he surely would have spent big bucks this year.
Basically Woody admitted in his presser that he didn't like dealing with Revis and his agents. He said he would have signed him if he knew Revis would accept the 12 mil Kraft gave him. That doesn't mean he meant it. And when he was interviewing GMs to replace Tanny rumors were he wanted Revis out. It wasn't Idzik who didn't want to sign him in 2014 it was probably the owner. The only reason he overpaid Revis in 2015: he didn't want the criticism.
He did spend money to sign Harvin and was criticized for it. His haters said he only did it to save his ass. Or did he do it because he knew Harvin from Seattle and made the deal during the season because Percy wasn't available earlier. The Seahawks didn't decide to get rid of him until October. It was a good low risk trade and Harvin played well at times.
he had zero emphasis on the short term. you simply cannot approach the NFL that way. i'd have had zero confidence in his spending decisions this year, based off past decisions and approaches he took last year. if he didn't handle the early FA action correctly, things would get real ugly due to the cap floor requirements. Revis would still be a Pat. he gets no 'credit' for not spending last season imo. sending Idzik packing, and bringing in Mac, was the best move we made this offseason.
His team was 8-8 after a good 2013 draft. They drafted a Qb and a guy who during his last college season for a while was considered the best Qb in the draft. Was it a mistake starting him: yes. But remember that was the new trend in the NFL after Luck, RG3, Tannehill, Dalton all started their rookie years.
We will see how good Mac is over time. One off season doesn't make or break him especially when his team hasn't played a game yet. Looks good on paper today, partially in thanks to the clean slate he inherited. That and a dollar will get you something off the dollar menu.
