Geno Smith may have to compete for job after all erhaps Chan Gailey spoke too soon. Or just too honestly. After his offensive coordinator said Geno Smith was pegged as the starter and there would be no competition for the quarterback job, Jets head coach Todd Bowles said that wasn’t necessarily the case. “Chan’s very matter-of-fact,” Bowles said, via Dom Cosentino of NJ.com. “Come camp time, there will be competition at the spot. . . . That doesn’t mean it’s going to stay like that.” In jamming the toothpaste back in the tube, Bowles explained that Gailey’s reference was largely because Fitzpatrick is coming off a broken leg, and that means that today, there’s not necessarily a competition because there can’t be an even distribution of reps (though Fitzpatrick did some work in OTAs). “You don’t start out having two or three games getting first-team reps,” Bowles said. “I view it as open competition. It’s [Smith’s] to lose.” Based on his track record, there’s a decent chance he will. Smith has 41 turnovers in two seasons, while Fitzpatrick has the benefit of background with Gailey in Buffalo and a resume of solid if unspectacular play. If Smith continues to play as he has, the competition will likely fire up again.
nice damage control by Bowles. The reaction to Chan's statements were always ridiculous. I still believe Geno will start week 1, I think Chan's comments are closer to the truth.
Do you EVER look through other threads before making a new one? Or is it just a reflex: had a thought/saw news ====> start a thread?
You would also trade for Austin Davis and would have drafted a possible murderer that would not have signed with a team that drafted him no matter what and was passed on by all 32 teams.
this was always the case and should never had needed to be addressed if not for a a choice quote for a headline and the rest of chans presser being ignored. chan was asked and would not acknowledge the possibilty of geno failing. however he did say "injury or other unforseen issues". that is what he was talking about. it was pretty easy to interpret watching his press conference. anyone who read the headline and than watched the presser should have seen through this.anyone who read the articles and not the presser was taking for a troll ride
I saw the news and thought it deserved its own thread. The words came straight from the horses mouth. No need to bury it on page 50 of a thread that should have wound down a while ago.
I fully agree--I think it speaks to Bowles character that he waited a week to rebut Gaileys choice of words. That is the meaning of this thread to me.
Just me reading into this: It's almost like Chan has the mothering, nurturing supportive role and Bowles is playing the stern no-nonsense dad role. If true - I like that approach/dynamic between head coach and coordinator.
Bullshit! Most of us still check under the bed for the Buffalo Bills defense before we go to sleep at night. Geno really was that bad against them and we have every right to be concerned about anyone in authority giving him an endorsement.
He will have to fight to remain the starter if he sucks in training camp and preseason he'll get benched. Last year is the past, I'm looking forward to seeing how Geno has progressed in year 3, I'm also cautiously optimistic in his development.
BULLSHIT. At the time you started the thread the news was very fresh, it was on very last pages of the other thread. You started asap so that it was YOU. Last name fits well. On the broader picture, you're right. Everyone should re-thread all discussions every 3-4 pages, no need to bury daily news. Maybe mods should stop this silly practice of merging threads.
The other thread was about what our OC said over a week ago. This thread is about what our head coach had to say within the last 24 hours. The other thread outlived its usefulness but please cling to your useless opinion.
I watched the press conference last week. Gailey said what he said. The quote wasn't taken out of context or misquoted or anything like that. He was very much all in on geno being the starter. It's good to know we have a bunch of mind readers on here who knew what he really meant. The rest of us mortals were just going with what was actually said.
He said expects, probably, and unforseen circumstances. None of those terms are definitive. Yes he was very supportive of geno, but it wasn't like he wrote his name on the depth chart with a sharpie. It very much jived with what bowles said in march about how position competitions would work.
