Jets were being paid to honor members of the armed forces?

I find this analogy to be fairly disturbing on multiple levels.

    As I find both phrases.

    Something about...banality.

That has to be the stupidest shit I ever heard. I was never in harm's way. America can thank them by making sure they have jobs when they come home. They don't, because those who control the purse strings don't give a shit about them. Take your fight to those who control the purse strings and fall in line, since you don't want to think for yourself.

There is much truth to Roger's comment, like it or not. He has specifically not directed anything derogatory towards members of the military, those actually making the personal sacrifices, but at the military system and its manipulations. Before the knee-jerk pseudo patriotic statements are spewed and endorsed by the "likes" of so many, some thought should be given to why so many sacrifices were made. I served my time, you have not and I question how many of your supporters have , beanz. You get no credit for that of friends and family.

Edited to add that I have now read some of the follow up and can't understand why some guy who started out on the right track and could so easily have earned the respect of others here has instead decided to hide his original worthy point under an avalanche of bullshit. Roger - grow the fuck up!

First off, I do respect that you served your time and thanks for your service. I don't know why you put that credit part in there, bc that's not at all what I was looking for by any means.

My issue was him saying that everyone who serves is a sheep and an idiot, etc. we all know there are some truths to his initial point. Anyone who would deny that is being naive. I also stated that in a previous post in this thread. But to disrespect those and speak about them like they are inferior people for serving their country is out of line in my opinion, and I reacted how I did. Was it harsh, yes. I felt it was a disrespect to those close to me that currently serve or have served honorably, and there are quite a few. Do I take it back, absolutely not. Bottom line is I don't stand for disrespecting the hard working men and women of the military, and that's what I felt he did to try and make his point. He didn't need to go there to make his point, and I took offense to it, along with others on here.

I would guess that you, Mr. Hobbes, have no experience with "the human cost of war". Please correct me if I'm wrong, but are you familiar with the term "chicken hawk?"

I put the credit part there because the service of others is irrelevant to comments you make. Please note that after reading more of roger's comments I have edited my response that was being posted while you were also posting. Unfortunately I believe a lot of his sentiments are shared by those making the decisions, and especially those who encourage them, to commit our services to campaigns which do not benefit the American people.

To each their own my friend. I respect your point and you, unlike the other poster, stated it like a decent human being.

Like I said, it hit home. That's why my comments were the way they were. But I do understand where you are coming from.

whats stupid? if there were not a volunteer armed forces everyone would have to serve out of high school ala israel for example. the fact that people volunteer kept you from having to serve. like i said, you can disagree with the way the military is used but be thankful for those who volunteer, for whatever reason they do. its a better alternative than draft or mandatory service.

I'd trade the current permanent military industrial complex for a mandatory service requirement in a heartbeat. No fucking way we'd have invaded Iraq without an all volunteer army.

When the entire population is forced to sacrifice, the cost-benefit analysis is undertaken with quite a bit more care. When we all have real skin in the game, the decision to actually play is much harder.

And I'm fairly sure Hobbes has served. That doesn't give him a pass for his ignorant and odious political beliefs, but still.

i served, 4 years on an aircaft carrier,i am not going to pretend it was anything like being on the ground in a hot zone, but i will say this. its a lot tougher when you are around people who don't want to be there. a whole force of that would be unbearable i think. granted you are probably right about the liberal use of the forces.

    Hardly.

Rogers comment is barely this side of 9/11 truther-ism.

Oh..strike that....Yep Exxon-Mobil and Conoco Phillips made out huge on the Iraq war.
As closely as I am with the term, moron.

I left Parris Island, with two guys that went to Beirut, and never came home.....

And..FWIW, rather than spout moronic leftist platitudes that tenured leftists put on impressionable young minds, I actually try to make a concerted effort to study geo-politics, and economic conditions that dictate what happens and where it happens.

Maybe you could enlighten us all on which wars of the 20th century were fought at the behest of the wealthy and powerful (btw...as you are almost blissfully unaware, that phrases origin is Marxist trope)

So, was it WW1, that was fought at the behest of the rich and Powerful?

Or Maybe WW2? Surely the Nazi's and Hirohitos suicide squadrons were actually champions of the downtrodden american working class.

(here we get a break from garden variety squabbles of diplomacy, to it's more pernicious form)

Or maybe Korea? Yeah that must be the one...clearly the ancestors of benevolent dear leader, wanted to keep those poor folks in South Korea from a life of misery...

    Vietnam?

The Cold war? And the proxy campaigns in the western hemisphere, including the Cuban Missle Crisis

(Yes, we're up to communism, now there I could almost concede that defeating communism is in the interests of the wealthy....if it weren't for all the dead bodies those champions of the worker left in their wake...somewhere NORTH of 200 million.)

And saving the best for last, The middle east, and by extension Africa ...the origins of conflict there has less to do with Israel, and Oil, than the failed attempts at colonization by the British and French....(particularly since those areas were a mess long before oil was a precious commodity.)

    but hey...you're right, scholar.

And before you trot "Iraq the second act" out there...you might want to take a break from what comes out of 620 Eighth Avenue; NYC, and read a book or two.

    Just a thought.

    Dude, that's hilarious.

I was grabbing some crap at Giant Eagle the other night, and some guy (a former Warrant Officer, from the shirt) struck up a conversation with me, and that subject (mandatory service, not my ignorant and odious political beliefs...) came up...

So you might want to start drinking bc you're agreeing with me again. (though sadly I've all but given it up.)

(yes, I served (lightly) USMC from Parris Island to Millington, Tenn, to Irvine California.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_Corps_Air_Station_Tustin (Closed now, sadly...5 minutes from Huntington Beach)

Not nearly as rough duty as some of the guys I knew.

    *****Edit...

I just read the second half of your post. Skin in the game would change many things, like people willing to remain ignorant of the things going on around them, and accepting the simplest pablum thrown at them, rather than doing the work of pulling some of the smoke and mirrors aside.

We have an amazingly ignorant electorate, sadly....comedians and pundits routinely get those moronic guy on the street interviews during electoral cycles..

That having been said, ironically it's usually the people who blindly accept what their college professors tell them, that act like sheep....

I mean $#!t...we still have people that insist Alger fucking Hiss was innocent.

And that explains the protests and riots during the Vietnam War as opposed to the indifference shown by the public today. Every male 18 and over had skin in the game and plenty of them didn't want to die halfway around the world as board pieces in a game of Risk between world powers. In contrast to then, Bush told us to go shopping. The majority of people now only interact with the military in an airport or at a sports venue. And so many people have lost interest because the current fighting has gone on and on- again halfway around the world- for years with no end in sight.

    Not completely.

The peace protesters were in fact helped to organize at many levels by the other pair of hands in the risk game.

(I guess when you see those 'spontaneous' political rallies against conservative positions...it's really just a coincidence that they have matching SEIU or tshirts, buses and matching placards.)

I see you have not made note of any sacrifice made on your own part, but notice you have used the word "leftist" twice in the same sentence, I'm sure that Fox has taught you more than a single word for when you believe a personal attack is needed to secure your position. I also note, that in the absence of common sense and a legitimate argument, you have also salted in a "moron" or two. And yes, much of what you cite, virtually everything after World War II, has been unnecessary and counter productive to the American people except of course to the defense industry and their pet politicians.

I don't know what the address you mention represents, nor do I care - my ideas are my own, but the bus station must be nearby, why don't you take a ride?
