I'm about to have a bachelor's from UConn then go on to dental school but the process to finish the master's wasn't too daunting

I'm sure you must be very proud of your son, Mrs. Petty.

greg and ryan are smart yes, but they dont (especially mac) have the natural talent and athleticism to succeed, where as petty seems to have. I would NEVER have expected mac to succeed in the NFL, maybe fitz as he is built a little better but petty seems to have all the right ingredients

For everyone hoping that Petty will "pull a Russell Wilson" and perform so well that Bowles has no choice but to name him the starter in year 1; don't hold your breath. Obviously this is the dream scenario for all of us since getting Wilson-like production out of the QB spot would make the 2015 team a strong contender. But Wilson at least ran a pro-style offense at NC State so he had a huge leg up on Petty. Wilson was faced with the task of learning NFL defenses, but Petty has to learn NFL defense AND NFL offense.

In order for him to "pull a Wilson" and start week 1, he would have to learn an entirely new language, master taking snaps from under center while simultaneously reading defenses - making sure to sync up his footwork with the route concepts, learn the complexities of defensive schemes, get comfortable in a huddle and calling plays/audibles, learn NFL protection schemes and fine tune his internal clock to the speed of the league and figure out how to adjust his footwork while going through progressions, all in the next 3 and a half months with limited exposure to coaches due to the new CBA.

If anyone has the work ethic, intelligence and personality to do it, it's him, but it's barely even on my radar because the chances are so slim. I'll hold out hope like the rest of us, but the Wilson comparison isn't fair to Petty because it doesn't show appreciation for how much more work he has to do than Russell did.

Every analyst is calling Petty a "project", and I think the fans should think of him like a school project. Starting him this year would be like a teacher moving up the due date and saying "time's up, turn in what you have done". Easiest way to get an F.

    I agree..

A better best case scenario is a Chad Pennington-like trajectory. Like Pennington, Petty has great intelligence & work ethic. Pennington needed to sit though as he wasn't ready for the NFL coming in either. He worked hard and learned and stepped in when ready. Petty could do that as well.

I will take your input a step further if I may: I think Petty, given time, can become Chad in steroids, super game smart but with a far stronger arm and a stud body build to last. Not too shabby at all.

Bryce Petty doesn't even have to play a game, but jsut from reading a play in the playbook he's already smarter than Geno..

But you're high out of your skull if you think he's going to Russell Wilson-it and should be our starter this season...

I think a lot of it will depend on just how much of the Spread Offense Gailey incorporates into the Jets offense. RGIII came out of the same offense and took the Redskins to the playoffs and won the Rookie of the Year because the Redskins took a lot of what he did in college and applied it to the pro game. Petty isn't going to run like RGIII, but I think he is a better passer. He is also built a lot better than RGIIII to handle taking hits. Clearly the Spread concepts will benefit Geno and Petty both.

This is why spread offense is a wrong answer in the NFL level. RGIII became ineffective in part due to the hits he took. QBs are not supposed to get hit.

I don't want spread bullshit for a reason.

RGIII didn't get hit because of the spread offense, he got hit because he scrambled and made himself a runner, which will get you hit.

Nobody said "should," we said "could." Don't forget, the QB bar on the Jets is set pretty low right now.

Manning and Brady both play out of spread style sets, it's not the offense that's the problem it's the QB wanting to scramble too much

RGIII didn't have a very good OL to protect him and he was forced to scramble and take hits. It seems like the Jets are doing fine with their WR and OL. Allowing the QB to play from the gun more often like a typical spread offense instead of under center like a Pro-style offense would benefit both Geno and Petty. My main point was not that Petty can take a hit but that his learning curve could be expedited if Gailey gears the offense to more of a spread offense to help Geno.

I'll take two completed passes to someone other than our opponent for now

What's more likely to happen in preseason...

Bryce playing really well...or Geno playing like shit?

That's all we need....a qb controversy.

I'd bet on Fitzpathetic looking decent.

Of course, while Geno looks like a tub of horse shit that he is.
