Quick question: With the current crop of Franchise QBs getting older and playing in their sunset years, who are the new crop of Franchise QBs who will dominate sports for the next 15 years? Tannyhill? RG3? Kaeperneick? Johnny Football? Sanchez? Geno? Andrew Luck is the closest thing but he's one guy on one team. I'm just not seeing 5-6-7 up and coming franchise QBs that carry their teams through thick and thin. Maybe, just maybe, the pendulum is swinging and we're getting back to real football where killer defenses tend to win out.
Seriously gentlemen, we need to stop with the comparison to those all time great defenses, I'm glad we have hope, but those defenses had multiple HOF players and all pro players in the positions that were not taken up by a HOF player. The jets have one HOF caliber player and that's Revis, our DL, safeties and LB don't have one HOF, or all pro. I'm hoping we can fix the QB position, that's going to determine how this season goes.
Richardson, Wilkerson, Williams(?) have what it takes But yes I agree we aren't them However, this combination of an incredible DL with these CBs is still rare and very good, I think
You're being short sided. HOF doesn't happen until 10years after a career is finished. Our young guys are in the 'earn it' phase.
I don't think I'm being short sided, the Bears and Ravens defenses did not win SB their first year assembled, it took time and experience for those players to reach that type of dominance. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited for the jets defense, but at this point it's only potential. Those defenses were great but they alone could not win on a consistent basis, they needed the offense to complement them. They both had excellent running games to control the game. McMahon was one hell of a QB for the Bears, he made plays, he was no Trent Dilfer.
That's where the head coach has to step in and let the QB know what's expected of him. The Jets don't have Rodgers, Brady. Manage the game, protect the football should be what's expected/demanded from the QBs. I think Fitzpatrick with his experience and familiarity with the system is the guy to do it.
On paper the 2015 New York Jets look better. Why can't we be excited? The Jets have been a perennial top 10 or near top 10 D since 2009. This ain't their first rodeo. This looks like it could be their best unit. Where's the weakness? They're good & deep. Joe Klecko is saying they could be #1 in 2015!
What I've seen of Fitzpatrick is that he's not a good game manager. Like Mark Sanchez he takes too many chances and overestimates his accuracy. He can move the ball but he turns it over, too. But I think last year in his second stint of starting for Houston he dramatically cut down on turnovers which is good. At this point I'd take him over Geno.
Wilk was 2nd team all-pro before, I would put him in that all-pro class. Richardson will be there soon also.
Where? Well, where's Ray Lewis? Where's Ed Reed? Revis & Cro on the perimeter is an upgrade, but a slot receiver pulling Skrines outside still leaves them suspect coverage-wise between the numbers.
im not saying we cant improve in those areas. my point was more that defense wasnt the only area where that ravens team was elite. special teams and oline play was elite as well. that oline. Ogden is one of the best to ever play the position and a hall of famer. Mulitalu might be headed there as well. jeff mitchell was a pro bowl center as was mike flynn.
Ppl here were saying the same thing about Damario Davis his first year here :-/ but hey I hope you're right. I think we have waited too long to overhaul the LBs and OL
we can definitely go far if geno or fitzpatrick plays adequately i'm not afraid to say it, russell wilson is a glorified game manager
David Harris isn't Ray Lewis but he's pretty d@mn good. Ed Reed wasn't on the 2000 team. ON PAPER they have to go out and do it 2015 NYJ secondary > 2000 Batimore Ravens secondary 2015 NYJ d-line > 2000 Baltimore Ravens d-line 2015 NYJ LBs < and it ain't by much 2000 Baltimore Ravens
The Jets have to stop beating themselves. They've been one of the top D teams in the league since 2009, except for 2011 & 2012 they've been one of the top rushing teams in football since 2009. They've made stupid mistakes mostly at QB, wreckless with the football, handing the other team points, field position etc. No accountability. If the Jets can stop beating themselves, play smart, with this defense Whooo ...
Correct on Reed - thx. Harris good, Ray Lewis was sideline to sideline great. Ravens secondary had Rod Woodson and Chris McAlister (and Duane Starks). Ravens DL with Sam Adams and Tony Siragusa: teams stopped trying to run on them (60.6 yards per game). Corey Dillon once refused to go back in during a game against them. Off the edge? Peter Boulware, Mike McCrary and Rob Burnett-pick your poison (esp. Boulware). - Four shutouts: the most since the '76 Steelers. - Fewest points allowed ever (165) over a 16-game schedule. Here's the kicker: in the playoffs (playing against better competition), Baltimore's defense gave up one touchdown in four postseason games. In 16 quarters, they gave up 16 points - ouch. Hope the 2015 Jets turn into worldbeaters, but before they've played a single down, I'm not daring to compare them to a truly elite defense, a defense that imposed its will on offenses a la the 2000 Ravens, 1985 Bears, etc.
I can't call any QB who consistently extends plays with his legs and finds receivers downfield a "game manager". He's got a great defense and running game but when you're making plays on your own you're not managing the game.
Maybe if Rex was still the coach the D would be as good as the 00 Ravens,As a D coordinator alone when it comes to schemes and calling plays Bowles isn't on the same level as Rex.I think Bowles will be a great defensive coach but until I see the product on the field its hard to say how great our defense is gonna be.One thing I do know is you have to do a horrible job with the stacked defense we have for it not to be great.There's a lot of pressure on Bowles because anything other then a top 3 defense would be a dissapointment.
