seems to me his general lack of "possession receiver" targets is basically just a matter of the team not needing it from him more than his tracking skills. He's a good overall receiver, he's just exceptional at one particular part of the game and thats where the bulk of his production went. You wouldn't use your Lamborghini to go get groceries, even if its totally capable of being used for that purpose⦠if that makes any sense.
the only one that had something negative to say about him on draft day was Kiper... but it's Kiper...
Smith has great quickness as well, he also makes people miss in space. Jackson may be a touch better in that regard but Smith isn't going to be asked to be our punt returner. So its not a big deal. I don't care about the physical attributes, I am only commenting on how he moves, he moves just like Desean Jackson and Mike Wallace. Those two are perfect comparisons for me.
Thanks for the read. He's definitely got tremendous upside if he can improve his route running. And even if be doesn't, his ball tracking abilities will keep safeties out of the box and open game up. I wasn't super excited initially about this pick given Strong and Lockett but this guy has more upside than either.
Torrey Smith is a good player,But I'm hoping he's more like Dsean.Worst case scenario is Stephen Hill
He's already proven himself in college as a better WR than Hill ever was in college or the NFL. I highly doubt he has a fall out like that but I guess it's not impossible. Hill was a retarded pick. It was hysterical watching homers defend him ad nauseam on here.
It goes to show how biased everything is. I bet if Mel saw the players the Patriots drafted without knowing the team who drafted them, he'd probably say it was a fair/weak draft. Yet, every year they pick guys who they all agree were reaches or on no ones draft boards and then immediately go to rationalize it to the tune of: "This guy the Pats picked in the 3rd round was projected to go in the 6th round, but Bill Belichick knows what he's doing" How is that objective draft analysis?
Hill couldn't catch the ball unfortunately that is the most essential part of being a wr By all account Smith can at least catch therefore he can never be Hill
I, too, don't see his floor being as low as Stephen Hill. From what I've seen this dude has very reliable hands. He tracks the ball really well, wins contested jump balls, and follows through with the possession once he catches the ball. Very optimistic after seeing some of his tape. He can be a game changer. I am very satisfied with our WR corps now. Although we unfortunately don't have a good QB, I believe that this WR corps will help whomever is under center for us this season tremendously.
i dont see the desean jackson comparison. jackson is an elite kick returner as well as being insanely shifty and a guy you can throw bubble screens to who can take them to the house. he doesnt just have elite speed and acceleration, but also quickness i think smith is more then just a guy who can run 9 routes. i think he can do alot of things. i dont see him as that shifty guy who turns a short one into a long one. i think torrey smith is probably alot more accurate
do you have and videos showing that quickness and shiftiness. not saying you are wrong but i searched long and hard and couldnt find any. i dont see him doing anything like this stuff: specifically the returns and screens.
this has been brought up a few times and its by people who have obviously never seen Smith play. This guy is a football player with great speed, great hands, an ability to track the long ball and the ability to compete for the ball in th eair and win those battles. He is absolutely NOTHING like Hill......at his absolute worst, Smith is twice the receiver as Hill
