That team also had outstanding special teams play.

This is a really horrible post. 77 is not a "median" QB Rating. that would be assuming that the top QB's in the league finish with a QB rating of 158.3 which is absurd. the Top 5 QBs are in the 100-110 area.

77 is not "average". it is closer to terrible. to put that in perspective:

-16 NFL quarterbacks had a QB rating of 90 or better
-Joe flacco and Jay cutler were 16th/17th in QB rating respectively at 91.0 and 88.6. this would be "average" QB play
    - Geno smith's 77.5 QB rating ranked 29th out of 32 quarterbacks
-only 5 of the top 32 quarterbacks in the league had a QB rating under 80.0

It is simply ABSURD to paint it as if geno had anything approaching an 'average' season last year.

77.5 QB rating in todays NFL is putrid

Our D was nowhere near dominant in 2010, it wasn't even as good as 2009. Our O was good, not great and the D was good-very good but nowhere near elite. THIS D now is better on paper, will that translate on the field? we'll see.

our K was inconsistent most of that year, that was Folk's worst year for us.

Weatherford was great in the reg season but awful in postseason.

    we had good coverage/returns.

we have really good weapons, but Geno can single handily lose us games. He did so a few times last yr.

the only game he singlehandedly lost was the home game vs. Buf. he looked like he had never played football before. Other than that he had a lot of help in being as bad as he was most of the season. Hopefully w/ another year experience, MUCH more talent around him and Chan Gailey he can become a decent QB. if he is decent we can do some damage. If not we won't have a chance.

I think if you are indeed an "average QB with brains" unlike an elite QB or a bad QB, the offensive weapons around will really determine how well you play.

Andrew Luck would still have been pretty great with our offensive weapons from 2 years ago and Jamarcus Russell would still stink up the joint with our guys this year.

You have to believe since Fitz has pretty much been an overall average QB with a lack a consistency, that this offense, with the playmakers it has, will keep him playing at least average.

These may be the best weapons he's ever had an I believe his ceiling is raised a bit because of it.

Geno Smith will be one of the keys for the season.

He cut his ints from 21 to 13. If he can continue to improve and get a QB rating of about 85, this team should go to the playoffs.

Okay, I'm on my phone right now so I'll type up a whole long one tonight giving you my rundown of Geno. I might include screenshots from the All-22 tape of this season.

    Good write up Turk.

Smarter men than me have said the only way to beat a Tom Brady is to out score him with offense or knock him down and keep him down with defense. The way our defense is shaping up it takes a lot of the pressure of our offense to be #1. Avoiding turnovers is the absolute key.

Geno won't have to post 35-40 pts/game, but he CANNOT turn the ball over. That's really the only change we need and I can see that happening.

Having Marshall AND Decker running routs will allow for a bigger throwing window to both, and Marshall is a big body that fights for the ball and usually wins.

Add in Devin Smith taking the top off 5-6 times a game will help even more.

Add Jace Amaro in his 2nd season and playing the full year will also help. Geno and Amaro stared building some good chemistry and HOPEFULLY that will continue.

Last, Macc has not abandoned the running game, which is a QBs biggest friend.

Bottom line if Geno can cut his TOs in half and put up 21-28 pts/game we should be in fairly good shape.

    You forgot the following games:

    1. Chargers
    2. Miami Pt. 1

There is room for improvement, but I am not confident he will improve. I have never seen a QB in this era get benched this many times and end up being a good NFL QB.

I will be rooting for him because I want this team to be back in the playoffs.

SD we got killed as a team, nothing worked in any phase and they took the ball out of his hands vs. Miami so he cannot be blamed for that one.

I don't have any expectations for him, I just hope he can be a decent QB.

    playmakers? 'this offense'?

i think our line is average

i think our backs and WRs are average

i cant pick out one guy who is going to take a 4 or 5 yard catch, make people miss, and take it to the house

i think we have a really talented guy in marshall and another in decker. but i wouldnt classify our skill players as much better then average and i dont see an elite playmaker on this roster

he had 21 INTs in 443 attempts as a rookie, one every 22 attempts
He had 13 INTs in 367 attempts last year, one every 28 attempts

Dude, your opinions are so whacked out that you come across as a troll from another fanbase.

Our WRs are average? Compared to what? Find me 5 teams with better receivers.

asking a QB to cut his tunrovers in HALF seems really unrealistic

asking anyone to post 28 points a game seems really unrealistic. only 6 teams achieved that last season (packers, broncos, eagles, patriots, cowboys, colts).

asking your qb to turn it over has as frequently and produce 10 more points per game to me just doesnt seem possible or even remotely realistic

i dont see how that is relevant.

the original poster made a claim that a 77 QB rating was average. that premise is completely and utterly fals. 77 is bottom 5 QB rating, nowhere near average (91.0) and pretty terrible.

can geno improve? sure. but he really was misleading people by trying to state geno was already close to average last season. that could not be further from the truth
