Charlie Kelly: "Yea well I guess I answered your question although I'm not sure why you are taking issue with me talking about his draft record instead of addressing my reason for why he took a NT." Belly thinks a massive NT is a base part of his D, and the choice was a good one for that reason. His other picks don't factor into my feeling for the JETS. I didn't look at all our opposition this season to see how their draft stacks up vs the JETS
Williams will pack a little more meat on his 20 year old frame over the next couple of seasons, he's already 302 and he'll probably settle in at 325-340 range by 22 or 23 years of age. Williams has a lot of experience playing the read and react 2 gap. If the Jets can keep the Big 3 band together they're going to have a massive and dangerous 3-4 line for years to come Between 'Big Mo', 'Boss Hog' and now the 'Big Cat'. (not my nicknames btw). Sometimes I really wish the NFL didn't have a salary cap.
we don't need to go to a 4-3 base, nor should we. i do agree though that Bowles has the challenge of optimizing our defense by getting the most talent out on the field together. i'd expect a lot of 3, 4, and 5 man fronts. more DB's and DL's, less LB's.. he'll need to be innovative, and has the talent to do so.
Yup I want to see a Brady sandwich where rich, snacks, Lwilliams and Wilk meet 'em in the middle, or a classic Coples decapatation.
Whoa here. Imo the key is Coples and how committed the Jets are to playing him standing up. If he can stick there, staying in roughly 70% or more of the plays, the Jets will be happy to stay with the 3-4. I still wonder if they are committed to giving big money to Wilkerson. We shall see about that. If so, which imo will create contract issues down the road, they can rotate the front 3 among Wilkerson, Harrison, Richardson and Williams. Should be a killer DL, if an ultimately expensive one. Staying with the base 3-4 allows Bowles to make regular subs in the nickel and dime packages as is his history from the LB's. It will be interesting seeing who stays out there more often, Harris or Davis. But as of right now, I think it less than likely the Jets go to a 4-3 base. We'll probably see it a lot, but not as the base.
"If Bowles was smart?" Seriously? So you think you know more than Bowles about how to coach defense and how to use players in his system? I like you and often agree with you, but this is over the top. Bowles is plenty smart when it comes to football. Why don't we wait and see how he uses the players and what alignments he uses? I'm sure that he doesn't need one of us to tell him how to run D. Williams, of course, should be starting, but that's not gonna happen very often. That's one of the reasons why I was initially so unhappy with his being the pick at #6. The Jets can't switch to a full time 4-3 because they don't have the LBers to play a 4-3. Davis could play one of the outside LB positions, but Harris is too slow to play MLB in a 4-3, and they have no one to play the other outside LB position. The Jets LBers are all too big and too slow except for Davis. Bowles has said the Jets will remain in a 3-4 alignment as their base defense. Someone said the other day that perhaps the Jets should run a 5-1-5 defense. Based on what I've read that Bowles did in Phoenix last season, that is more likely than switching to a 4-3 alignment. While probably all three could play NT some, it would be wasting their talents and wearing them down unnecessarily to have them play NT full time. Williams is a 5T DL. That's his perfect position. That's why I objected to taking him initially, as I thought not much would be gained by rotating him, and our 1st round pick won't have the impact that a 1st round OLB or WR could have. I'm sure that on passing downs, Bowles probably will rotate them at NT to add more pressure. Someone posted the percentage of defensive snaps Mo, Snacks and Sheldon played the other day. I was shocked. I think both Mo and Sheldon were already only in the 70% area, not 90%. Douzable, Ellis and I forget who else were rotating in last year. That helped me ease off of my objections to taking Williams. I'd rather have him rotating in than Douzable or Ellis.. This. It would be wasting their talents and energy and would tire them out needlessly playing NT full time. We have Snacks, it would be dumb not to use him. I'm sure that's part of why they drafted the NT in the 7th round . Barnes may stick too.
If Bowles "was" smart we are in big trouble. We need him to be smart going forward, not to have been smart in the past. Perhaps with his intelligence feared to be in the past you should take over the head coaching duties.
He better not pack on that much weight. I strongly doubt he would as quick at the POA. He could add another 5-10 and probably keep his quickness. 340LBS is insane buddy.
I really think this is key and if you listen to his agents they sound more and more like Revis's agents so I wouldn't be at all surprised if we don't trade him.
I think this is going to be a defense that gives you a ton of different looks and won't really be able to be labled a 3-4 or 4-3. This is where we are going to see just how good a coach Bowles is going to be. Is he going to adapt his players to "his" scheme or his scheme to his players. If he's smart he will use a different defense based on his opponent and have a lot of moving parts. It'll be a lot harder for opponents to prepare when they don't know what will be thrown at them. We have some very versatile players , we can run a myriad of different packages.
