I'm curious to see what Jets fans thought about that trade. It seemed logical at the time, but given what Washington got from Seattle I thought we should have received a bit more. I also wondered if we were targeting Mauldin the entire time or if Mac thought that he would have someone else available to him. Duke Johnson, Tevin Coleman, Eli Harold, and OO (Giants pick) all were players linked to the Jets.
I was not a fan of it all. At first it seemed like a diligent move to collect an extra pick and player, but it cost us a chance at both Duke and Coleman, as well as Eli Harold. The return was nominal and the price was too great in my opinion.
I think the Jets didn't like Harold essentially passing on him twice in the 2nd and the 3rd, i noticed the word "tough" was used a lot with Bowles during some of the interviews after the draft. He described D.Smith and L.Maudin as tough guys and word around draft circles was Harold was soft so that would make perfect sense on why the Jets didn't like him. As far as the other players we didn't draft a RB at all maybe we didn't like any of them, they all had flaws. Maybe we actually used Powell more this year everyone raves about him but he gets no PT.
The pass on Harold is perplexing so you could be right. I hate Maudlin combine times for OLB. According to cbssports: Harold: 4.60, 4.16 shuttle, 7.07 3-cone; Mauldin: 4.85, 4.58, 7.47 These are significant differences. I guess we have to trust Bowles on the better fit for his D.
Harold is definitely a better athlete although Mauldin does have 10-15 lbs on him. Parcells always liked his OLB in the 260-270 range
Mauler I believe is the guy we liked and we made a deal to get some assets with the pick. Btw the more film I watch on this kid the more I like him! Super high motor and seems to be the linch pin of the D.
i'm not going to lie, i fucking love lorenzo mauldin. how can you not root for this guy man happy we made the trade
Wow--I just watched his highlights on youtube--he's got great technique and quickness (even against Georgia). I really like that he was the "drew brees" of the Louisville squad pumping the guys up before kickoff. I'm officially happy with this guy!
I did not like it as well. Could have ended up like this instead: Round 1: Leonard Williams DT Round 2: Devin Smith WR Round 3: Duke Johnson RB/Eli Harold LB Round 4: Bryce Petty QB That would have been a top notch draft. Draft was still good imo, but could have been outstanding.
I would add another 7th if Duke was the pick because the Stacy trade wouldn't have happened. Come to think of it that may have been a reason we weren't concerned with trading down having Stacy as either the plan or the backup plan if Coleman/Johnson were taken.
Terrible move. I'll chalk it up to rookie nervousness on Maccagnan's part. It's not unusual for a rookie GM to try to out-think himself like that. Hopefully he'll learn from that mistake.
Harold was more inconsistent but had better potential as an edge rusher. He was my 2nd pick for an edge after Beasley. Mauldin does not have Harold's athleticism but what he has is hustle, will to succeed, and leadership qualities. Maybe the FO took a gamble and it backfired or maybe they felt Mauldin fit this team better. I think they were fine with either one and that's why they pulled the trigger on the trade. Anyway, he has a chance to thrive behind this D line. I've come around on this pick, I will support it because I think Mauldin is the type of player that can succeed despite his lack of pure athleticism. He wont be an elite sack artist but he can be a great linebacker. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Everybody said if Harold was going to be around at that time, they'd take Harold. Obviously the Jets know something that people who post here don't. But seriously, only time will tell.
I like the trade. I wish we'd make more trades like this (so we'd have an abundance of 5th and 6th round picks). The draft is a lottery; the more ping pong balls you have, the better chance you have of winning. It's why Belichick always has talent even though he can't draft worth a damn.
That seven rounder gave us a Petty. The Jets were probably not targeting Harold as hard as people think.
The trade put us in a position to trade up for Petty AND (since we still had an additional 7th after the fact) trade for the Rams RB. Getting additional picks is a great thing, especially when you're targettng a guy who you know won't be picked until later in the round. I have a feeling we liked Mauldin the entire time and just wanted to pick him when we thought other teams would start to think about taking him.
Lol that LS though. Belichick can draft certain positions well, and the ones that he can't draft he has stopped picking (WRs, for example).
