fair point, I'm just suggesting that if we're going to take on a developmental QB it's not ideal that he's a 24 year old rookie. He's the same age as Geno.
Good QBs last deep into 30's. Taking the example of Brady and Peyton would be absurd; say, good QBs retire at 37 or so. That's good 10+ years from now. All right? Jets should be thinking about how they can raise this kid to be a good QB, not how old that kid is.
It's not just the matter of longevity, the article I posted cited that QBs who are 23+ in their last year of college have already reached physical maturity, and thus have less room to improve at the pro level (and also look better in comparison to college competition)
This is pretty weird but it looks like Petty actually throws a better and more accurate deep ball off of his back foot/while falling away.
Great choice. Happy we grabbed him. Let him sit behind Fitz this season and groom the shit out of this kid. He will be a stud.
Watching Michigan St. right now. He overthrows 3-4 deep balls while stepping into them, then on a couple other occasions the rush gets into his face and he fades away and throws beautiful lobs 30+ yards down field on the spot.
These are mechanical errors that need to be solved by the coaches. His footwork was his biggest physical issue with teams.
Still too early to say for certain, but it does look that way. But at least that draft class had a number of guys teams thought highly enough to draft, which is more than can be said for this years class.
I think Petty is in a better spot than Mariota and Winston. Not saying he's the better prospect, but I think he has a better chance at success because he doesnt have the pressure to be a franchise savior and can take the time to develop and mature. Here is some more background on him:
Have you gone back and looked at some of the other drafts? 1996 there wasn't even a QB taken until around the 44th pick, give or take a slot, back when there were only 30 teams drafting. The only thing that saved this from being a totally abysmal class is the top two, but the juries still out on if one will adjust to the NFL and if the other can keep his ass out of trouble so he can stay on the field.
Attention www.newyorkjets.com webmasters: In the interest of getting with the 'new' program, please note that on your current all-time Jets numerical list, you've listed John Hall (#9) as a punter. He was the placekicker whom you may recall hit that last-minute, game-winning, playoff-clinching 53-yard FG vs. the Raiders, a clutch boot that should never be confused with e.g., that equally great Mark Sanchez punt up in Foxborough. http://www.newyorkjets.com/ms/media-guide/2011/html/382.html __________________________________________________________
Hahahaaa you changed your tune 4 times in a thread because you thought it was bullshit Cleveland tried to trade up for Petty. Based on nothing but pure hate for the player. And then pulled out the mother of all internet loser ploys--you made a BET what could happen years from now. Go get your cut and paste hate Petty posts ready. _
Easily the best game I've seen him play. Also loved him vs Iowa state in 2013. Lots of promise. He can really rip the short ball on target with a quick release and high accuracy. If he can learn how to consistently place the deep ball like he does here and vs Iowa St. then he can be productive. http://draftbreakdown.com/video/bryce-petty-vs-kansas-2013/
He's really good at throwing off-platform, something that Gruden pointed out on QB camp. Even when his footwork goes to shit (which happens too much) he has the natural arm talent to put the ball on target with high velocity.
