Over / Under on making it further than Tajh Boyd? This guy stinks, no way he's an NFL QB. Why just waste a pick? Pick a big fat O-Lineman and hope he can slot in.
Quite happy with the Petty selection but that does not mean I believe he's a lock/guarantee to become something special. When Jets have starting QB play this bad (for multiple seasons), they need to at least have a development QB project on the roster. Justified or not, Simms just wasn't going to get a shot; so Jets needed to replace him with another QB with potential. Unfortunately, those slam dunk QB prospects rarely get past the top of the first round. Let's take a shot with Petty and if he doesn't work out, replace him next year or two years from now. Last year the Bills had an elite defense and a stud WR prospect and still couldn't make the playoffs and I feel that Jets are going in the same direction. Eventually, QB position needs to upgrade & I'd rather gamble a 3rd day pick than reach in early rounds.
Actually they don't. Most carry two. Of course if you had a developmental Qb who is athletic and can play STs it would be easier to carry 3. Rules on 3rd Qbs changed a few years back.
I have a question...... What if Petty Outshines Fitzpatrick and Geno in training camp? Is it possible that Petty starts from day one?
Zero chance of that happening. Even if Petty does take to Gailey's system quicker than anyone could expect, he will not start this year. Probably won't play either.
One thing to note about this game is that WVU's top 2 CBs were out of the game fairly early with injuries. He can still be good, but he needs to stay healthy and he needs a good pocket to throw from (more so than Geno).
Because he's as athletic as Mariota and more accurate passer than Winston. Set all time passing records for ucla despite having one of the worst o line in college football.
Ok then. Looks like we have a solution. Active or not, Petty needs to be at every game watching and learning. The more he gets in Gailey's head, the better and quicker he'll pick up the system. He can play next year. This year, he needs to observe, get a feel for the game, and study the system.
That would be a real good problem for the Jets to deal with. My guess is that Petty doesn't get the chance to outshine them because Geno & Fitz are going to rotate playing with the 1st stringers. For a new regime, the first year is kind of a mulligan when it comes to accepting blame for failure. So I'm assuming they play it safe and leave Petty on the sidelines (even if he outplays them in preseason). At least until the Jets are eliminated from playoff contention.
