How does talent meet your needs? or better yet how do you win games? I guess that gets figured out later. Williams- A gem to add among the gems on the DL (Todd Bowles is happy) Smith-Not DGB? Lots of speed there (Mac sleeper pick, Gailly is thinking) Maudlin-Excuse the pun but this pick was "drunken sentimentality" (With tons of other talent left on the Board including SMannion the Jets offense continues to flounder. Surely a LB gets picked later. Not even sure how good this one is. The competition at QB so far is quite limited and this is scary) Its funny many commentators muse how the Jets will only score points off of turnovers and fumbles. Did this work in Houston? Grade B
Williams is a need as well as the talent. If there is a problem with Mo's contract, Jets now have options. If there is no problem, Williams will allow in-game rest for the DL. Rotating DL means there will be pressure on opposing QBs throughout the whole game, not just 3 quarters with inevitable breaking down of the D in the forth.
In my opinion, Devin Smith can be a tremendous difference maker for this team. Explosive game-changing dime-dropping playmakers is something this team hasn't had basically since Rex took over (way too short stint with Braylon closest thing). No idea if this guy will translate his game to the next level, but if he does he'll add an element to the team that the Jets haven't seen in a very long time. Where Williams makes a good unit even better, Smith provides a whole new dimension. It also seems that Chan Gailey knows how to use a player with Smith's talent. Think this is going to be exciting to see.
I reacted strongly to the Leonard Williams immediately, but I soon came around and began liking it more and more. Devin Smith fills a necessary role right now and will be in a great position to learn and develop early on and hopefully flourish as a regular starter. Big fan of Mauldin. That's the kind of guy you want on your team. I'm fine with the trade down too. Doubt Posey makes the team, but good to pick up a 5th and 7th rounder too Very happy with the draft and this new regime so far.
One thing I haven't seen mentioned on here much is Smith's ball skills. He's got great timing and feel for coming down with jump balls. He is the anti Stephen Hill. So far, I give the draft an A-, maybe a B+. Gotta love the Williams pick and really like the Smith pick. Not sold on the Mauldin pick and the trade down. Thought potential impact guys at 70 like Harold and Coleman would've been fun to watch play next year. Overall it's been a strong draft for the Jets IMO.
I love how Williams fell us, it may salvage this draft. I really do not like Smith in the second and I am down on this pick. I have been saying for a long time that this draft was deeper in WR than last year. I still believe that. Unfortunately there will be at least a half a dozen receivers drafted after where we drafted Smith that will be better pro's. I expect not to get anything out of this pick next season, his performance will probably dictate that he doesn't even see the field much. I could see last years fourth rounders outplaying him in TC. Not happy about the trade. It really does not make much sense. A fifth, seventh and scrub to move down from a spot with second round talent. I don't hate the pick, but think we could have done better staying put or even at the new spot. Overall first impression so far B- (but time will tell)
So that would be Jalen Saunders, who got cut early in the season, and Shaq Evans. So Shaq Evans is going to outplay Devin Smith? That's bold... No chance
Love it, watching NFL network right now and Bucky said we had the best pick & the best overall draft so far. Said Mauldin is underrated and Smith is an amazing deep threat.
I love how fans/analysts grade the draft before the players play a single down in the NFL. The year they drafted Gholston, everybody said the Jets had an A draft.
I have no clue how anyone could watch film of Devin Smith, plug him into our current receiver crop and think we will get no production out of him this year let alone get outplayed by Shaq Evans
except me, i said within 60 second of the pick that he would end up being the worst pick in jets history.
dgb didnt get picked because he is a possible head case. it appears to me that the current fo is going to put quite a bit of emphasis on character and motor. harold i dont see being even a decent pro. he is long and skinny and appears to play straight up and stiff. i will admit i havent seen a ton of tape on him but what i have seen thats what i see. i actually like the mauldin pick. he looks like a guy who has a big motor and will bust his ass all day long to make plays. every team needs solid players who arent superstars, thats going to be his situation. in round 3 if there isnt a kid you think can become a sleeper star then you have to determine which guys have the highest probability of being a contributor on the nfl level. measurables are usually not the thing that gets a third round pick to become a good solid player for years.
1. Leonard Williams: A+ 2. Devin Smith: B- 3. Lorenzo Mauldin: C+ It's getting worse with each passing round, hope Mac turns it around today! Passing on Gregory in round 2 was a huge mistake, and will likely come back to haunt them. In round 3, Mauldin was a bit of a reach, although he sounds like a decent prospect. I would have preferred they stay put and take Eli Harold, but we'll see how it turns out.
You do realize that 20 of the 44 staters in the SB last year were drafted in rounds 4 and down? It gets harder to find stars but you find starters, role guys and contributors. Those are pretty important as well.If we find a solid RT with that 5th who can start and be serviceable it was a great trade.
truth i really think guys with character issues have no chance here at this point. a guy like gregory has a history and may have bigger problems and i dont think this fo is going to take chances with guys that could be an issue. not saying its right or wrong i just think they dont even put them on the draft board.
I love the Williams pick. Arguably the best and safest player in the draft. It is hard to argue with that. With the 6 pick you want an impact player who is a sure thing. Williams is surest thing in this draft. Give the FO credit here for having the balls to take him. I hate the Smith pick. I know he fills a need as a kick returner and punt returner, deep threat and bubble screen guy but he has bust written all over him. All he can run is a go route. He averaged catching 2 balls a game at OSU. I could see taking a flier on a guy like Smith in the 6th or 7th round but not in the second round. He appears to be more raw and have more to learn than Stephen Hill did coming out of college. I don't see him being able to run by defenders in the pro game like he did at OSU which means the one thing he can do might be quickly be negated. But I guess we should put trust in in the FO that they know what they are doing. But the pick really scares me with so many good players on the board. I like the Mauldin pick. It feels a need and he is a solid player. Plus we got 2 extra picks. Overall I would give the draft a C+ to a B- slightly better than average.
And that is exactly how you build a good football team. Everybody loves to focus on all the "star" players in rounds 1 and 2, but the successful teams find quality starters/contributors in rounds 3-7. Good post.
The issue with Gregory is not just his stupidity of failing a drug test at the combine. He is also underweight and struggles to maintain weight. There were reports of his weight falling back under 230 on team visits after getting up to 235 for the combine. That sounds like a classic example of water weight probably induced by his attempts to flush the mary jane.
