No one said that. White was clearly not rated that hi on the Jets board or Mac would have pulled the trigger. If you read between the lines the Jets were very hi on Cooper and if he was there we might have had a different outcome...perhaps. Could we have used a young stud WR, for sure, would White have appreciably improved the performance of our offense this year?....I could argue that the Lion will have a much bigger impact on an already good D. I think the two things that can immediately improve this offense (QB non withstanding) are a speed RB and a OL preferably a RT. WR would only add depth for the future. At the cost of further flame outs, a speed OLB could take this defensive team to a new level, and I'll take my chances any given day if the competition can only score 6 to 10 points as many here are stating. Quite frankly if we add someone like DGB in the second we would be just as good, if not better than with White. But there in no way in hell you will find another stud like the Lion. Fuck, if we can't throw the football, the best way to win is by stopping the other team from throwing the football...and it will be hell to pay with our new Lion's den.
This is where we disagree. In the large scheme, it would have been ideal to have an offensive player be the BPA. But there was not. They obviously waited till the last sec to make the choice so they listened to offers, but did not like the options.
It's fine that we disagree. I will never be convinced that Mac didn't get a reasonable trade down offer. I think he either got greedy or was too concerned with setting a precedent of being a tough negotiator for future drafts and trades rather than being concerned with ultimately doing what was best for the team. Based on everything I've been reading, Williams is a great player. Fine. Will the difference between Mo and Williams or Sheldon and Williams be enough to compensate for the 1-2 additional players Mac could have added on top of the one he took when he traded down, especially if at least a couple of those picks addressed needs? To be fair, I guess it's possible that Mac was thinking about taking Collins if he traded down and then the whole mess with that murder happened and he got scared off of Collins. We'll probably never know. It also may just be a matter of with his first pick ever he wanted to be certain that he got a very good player. I can understand and respect that. Still, even though Williams may become a great player, with 4 of the previous 5 1st round draft picks having been spent on a DL and all 5 having been spent on the D, I think it showed poor judgment to draft yet another DL in the 1st round, regardless of how good he is.
True, but they may not even like Collins. I was just trying to think of a rational reason why Mac didn't take a trade down offer when our offense needs help and the DL didn't. I'm just not a slavish adherent to any principle like BPA in the draft. I think previous drafts, need, strength of a position in the draft, and other factors need to be strongly considered. I also think it ridiculous to have the supposed best player in the draft and #6 pick sitting on the bench. He should be starting, but he's not gonna start over Mo or Sheldon. It's just a waste imo. The only way I can see that pick ever being totally justified is if they trade Mo.
Do you seriously think he's gonna start over Mo or Sheldon? The only way he starts is if they play him at NT or QB.
Guys they wouldnt have picked him if he wasnt going to play. There's a lot of draft left to address the offense. Plus we traded for Marshall.
he has the potential to make the both of them look like children. he wasnt just bpa, he was HEAD AND SHOULDERS BETTER than every other player still on the board. not marginally better, not much better, he was 100 times better than every other guy that was there. it was a no brainer decision. i really really expected tenn to take him at 2 and mm to drop to the jets. when they took mm and pick after pick happened and he ended up being there at 6 it was a no brainer for me. sure i thought hmmm sure wish he was an olb or a rush end. vic beasley may end up being a phenomenal player, but to reach for him there and pass up williams would have been an absolute catastrophe. i would have been enraged. like roger vick enraged.
