I'll take DGB over Gregory, Gregory has a combination of Gholston and Josh Gordon written all over him. I know I mocked him to the Jets awhile ago but I've since changed my mind on the matter as more and more information came in. Great physical talent but his bust potential is about 80%.
Gregory's issues have nothing to do with on the field while the Ghost's issues were all on the field. So I don't see the comparison.
I heard a report that he's down to under 230 or so, his weight fluxuates A LOT. Plus he's a bit of a one trick pony in being a pass rusher. Add in the fact that he lied at the combine and said he hadn't smoked weed in months and then failed the test. It's just concerning when you put it all together. I'd rather take someone with a little less top side but a lot higher floor.
Add in the fact that While Ray got busted a couple days before the draft Gregory continues to fall despite being considered the higher pass rusher and you start to think there's more that's hidden.
I disagree about the one trick pony label. Gregory has pretty good functional strength despite his size, definitely enough for a 3-4 OLB. He didn't play the run as well last year as he's done in the past but he's no Beasley. I can't argue about the lying, though.
As much as I'd like either Gregory or DGB I'll gamble that neither one goes to the Jets in round two and at least one will fall to round 3, probably gets drafted by New England.
You do have to wonder about his physical tools though and commitment if he can't maintain a proper weight. Just too many red flags for me at this point. I wouldn't have touched Ray either due to the recent off field issues, if you can't control yourself during the single most important 2 or 3 months of your life can you really be trusted in the future? I'm willing to overlook some character flaws, DGB for example I'm willing to cut slack because he's stayed out of trouble for the last 6 months at least, (I think). At least he was smart enough to keep his nose clean leading up to the combine and draft. Besides, there are 2 or 3 OLB's who are much lower risks with nearly as much upside still on the board.
I'd go defense again. Whilst both Strong and Smith would be nice picks, I think we can still get WR value in the third round (maybe DGB or perhaps Coates from Auburn). I don't like QB in the second, they wouldn't upgrade us much and if we want another arm perhaps take the Colorado kid in the 4th. Meanwhile, let's finish the D off. I'm liking Gregory or even Howard at OLB....
And we can go Defense next year too.. and the year after that.. You can never have enough defense since this is a defense oriented league now.
Overall, I'd consider the Jets entire collection of offensive weapons right now as average. This franchise will never learn. More ground n pound garbage next year. Need Offensive Playmakers.
If the Jets take another defensive player in the 2nd round, I hope that Chan Gailey resigns as OC. The offense has been ignored for too damned long!!! Only an idiot would draft Gregory at this point. I don't care what his talent level is.
