Go Tigers! I get it. I'm not saying that Beasley can't be special in what he does. The perfect situatiom would be as a pass rush specialist or with a team that is willing to live with and compensate for his lack of containmemt. That is not this defense. Bowles blitzes more than anyone. Bowles plays more dime coverage than anyone else. Bowles attempts to mix up blitz packages more than anyone else. In this defense Bowles would need Beasley to be strong in run support and coverage, because he doesn't want the same guys blitzing everytime and needs strong run support because there aren't any linebackers behind him. NFL defenses are not your typical 4-3 defenses anymore. They require their players to be very versatile. Beasley is not. He is not a fit in this defense.
Great Beasley article here: http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2015/3/6/8135681/vic-beasley-breakdown Its by a former NFL DL who played 1 year with the Jets and John Abraham. These are my favorite quotes from the article, of which there are many good quotes: "Vic Beasley is my top edge rusher in the draft. And by the way, it ain't even close." "Vic Beasley is John Abraham with a little better pass rush technique coming out. Yeah, I said it."
IMO that's hardly a ringing endorsement of Abraham. All Abraham had coming out was speed. He was very raw and would get pushed wide more often than not and just run by the QB.
Its definately a need on this defense and has been for awhile. The Jets have been scared off from going this route since the debacle known as Gholston. I would be thrilled with either Fowler or Beasley. I will also be happy with White if he drops. Not sold on Cooper because I don't think he can take the roof off of a defense like White can. We already have two pedestrian receivers in Marshall and Decker.
Beasely reminds me a bit of Elvis Dumervil. Incredibly disruptive force on the edge that may get overlooked because he doesn't come with the prototypical 6'5" 260 lbs. frame but you can't argue with his results on the field. He's been nothing but productive even with the small stature and short arms. He doesn't project overly well to the NFL game based on his measurables but guys with his speed, tenacity and technique to getting to the quarterback find their way to being very good and productive NFL players. I'm not expert on him nor have I seen all his games, just an observation based on his comparison to the other top pass rushers. It just seems like everyone reads into these things too much sometimes. Does a couple inches or 15 pounds matter so much when a guys motor never stops especially in a position that demands relentlessness? Sometimes measurables need to be overlooked.
Yeah, he likes Beasley. But he's not the only one. Beasley's on the rise, and that was before Gregory fucked himself.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...dream-come-true?campaign=Twitter_cfb_huguenin Beasley doesn't think the Jets will draft him at least not before these other 3 teams.
The thing is we have the Gholston syndrome here and abject fear we'll fuck up and get another one. No great physical specimens with ?s. Important draft for Mac.
I don't think any of the top pass rushers have a Gholston bust ability really though. The guy couldn't earn a start. I don't think they'll all pan out but I think they'll all hit the field at the very lleast. The field of pass rushers has also narrowed given Gregory and Shane Ray's inability to stay away from the pot. I actually retract that statement as I hope to god the Jets stay away from Bud Dupree. He's essentially the same thing as Gholston; dominating with athletic ability and little pass rushing capabilities. It's crazy IMO that he's considered a top 10 pick. The only Pass rushers worth a top pick now seem to be Beasely and Fowler, which work to our advantage if we want to trade down and Mariota's gone. That being said I still think Beasely is going to be the top pass rusher in the draft. You can't ignore the production and skillful pass rush he displayed in college along with the physical skills. Use the Ravens philosophy and draft productive gamers rather than workout warriors.
I'm not one to completely toot my own horn but damn I wish Maccagnan read this post. Beasley would've been an excellent addition to fix the pass rushing problems we're experiencing. Williams is on the road to being a great one, but Beasley would've helped the defense out a lot more than Williams has.
This is based on the assumption that the CS would have used him correctly, the jets have what was considered the best front 7 coming into this year and other than the first game against Cincinnati they have not been able to make many plays even with Richardson, Williams, Mo. Having Beasly would not have guaranteed any success.
Beasley is also a sub-par run defender. I wonder if Bowles and Co would have him on the field as much.
Whoever bumped this thread deserves a high five. I barely post here but do remember vouging for Beasley so hard. He's having a great year with 15 sacks. Now. For this year....I swear to god if we pass on Clemsons Deshaun Watson we will never ever live it down as a franchise. He's a home run. He's a close to a sure thing as there is. If hackenberg is really the future ..fine, but I see no way that he is. Watson has to be taken if there.
I disagree about Watson. At this point, I think the top 10 is too high for him. I've seen Clemson and Watson a lot and he just doesn't excite me. He's poised and calm. I like that at times, but at other times think it's a detriment. Like Bowels, he doesn't seem to have enough fire and passion. I like his mobility and toughness. His decision making and arm are suspect imo. Maybe if Clemson wins the national championship and Watson's workouts and Combine are great, I might change my mind, but at this point, I'd rather fix the pass rush and secondary than take Watson, even as much as I'd love to see the offense improved.
