Revis, Abraham, Keyshawn were all pros at the time they got traded away for pick(s). Let's not act like it's the possibility of it happening is unprecedented.
All 3 were disgruntled stars at the time of them being traded. Mo at this time is not a disgruntled star. If the scenarios were the same, it would hold true.
http://mmqb.si.com/2015/04/27/philip-rivers-trade-titans-chargers-nfl-draft/ Mon Apr. 27, 2015 Rivers Trade Dead? Draft Intrigue Begins at No. 2 With the draft three days away, the Titans still are willing to deal the second pick—Browns? Jets? Eagles?—but acquiring Philip Rivers from San Diego is growing less likely. Plus, why this draft is unpredictable, how it’ll look in Chicago and more By Peter King Three days before the 2015 draft, one thing is clear: The drama starts with the second pick. With Tampa Bay very likely to take quarterback Jameis Winston number one, Tennessee is in command with quarterback Marcus Mariota the likely target if anyone wants to come up. Lots can happen, including Philip Rivers being in play, and Chip Kelly getting an itchy trigger finger, the Jets moving up for their quarterback of the long-term, and the Browns using their two first-round picks to jump into the fray. Nothing is clear this morning, but this is what I’m hearing, and what I believe three days from round one: • I don’t think the Chargers will trade Philip Rivers. Just a gut feeling after lots of time calling around over the weekend. Now, I do think the Titans and Chargers will talk this week, but I don’t see a smart match; moreover, as I’ve written all along, San Diego definitely does not want to trade Rivers, and I believe the Chargers have never been told Rivers won’t sign a contract in San Diego beyond this year—though he does not want to currently. I believe Tennessee would want more than the 33-year-old quarterback for the second pick in the draft, and if I’m San Diego GM Tom Telesco, I’m not willing to offer any more. Rivers is a sure thing, for three to five years anyway. Marcus Mariota is 12 years younger, but is not a sure thing. • If the Titans don’t get a good offer, I think they pick Mariota. Tennessee wants an offer; the Titans aren’t married to picking anyone at number two. I do not believe Tennessee has gotten a golden offer yet. As one GM in the top 10 told me Saturday: “Tuesday or Wednesday is when those calls are made, the serious calls.” Maybe—but the Falcons did the work on the huge Julio Jones draft deal with Cleveland three weeks before the 2011 draft. I’ve got to think that the Titans would know if they were going to get a really good offer by now. And I hadn’t heard of even a strong rumor of one by late Sunday afternoon. That doesn’t mean it won’t happen. The Titans, though they feel good about Zach Mettenberger, would feel better about Mariota. • The Titans were all over Mariota all through the college season, and beyond. One Oregon source told me the Tennessee scouts were the most fervent of all teams during and after the se ason investigating Mariota. The one thing the Titans feel very good about: Though Mariota has a reputation of being a running quarterback who would have a tough time adjusting to life as an NFL pocket passer, they saw that the majority of his throws this year came from the pocket, without a lot of movement before the throw. In fact, 23 of Mariota’s 36 passes in the semifinal win over Florida State last winter were from the pocket, without significant movement by him. • I can’t see Chip Kelly going all wacky for Mariota. But that’s just me. Jumping from 20, where Philadelphia is due to pick, to the top five would just be too debilitating for a team with some needs. One of the best general managers in football said to me over the weekend: “I think we’re all waiting for Chip to make a move, and none of us really knows if he will.” I don’t either. But I doubt it. My gut feeling three days out? (Dangerous in a year like this, because nothing looks certain but the top pick.) The Titans don’t get that pot of gold for the pick, and they take Mariota. Kiss of death. Now the pick surely will be dealt. One last thing about the run-up to the draft that happens every year. I spend time the weekend before the draft each year talking to people about my final mock draft, which will run Tuesday here at The MMQB. In talks with team officials, I usually say something like, “Tell me if you’ve heard anything you trust about” Team X. With Jacksonville picking third, I asked 12 people I talk to fairly often to tell me if they heard anything they trust about the Jaguars at three. Eight answered the question with a name. Amari Cooper, Dante Fowler and Leonard Williams all got mentioned as names they heard reliably. This is why, in draft week, you’ve got to qualify almost everything you say.
Nothing indicates to me that he's disgruntled. You guys are just being impatient. Mo is one of the most important players on the team.
I believe Mo wants to be here as much as any current player on the roster. If you've ever heard him on WFAN in his weekly spots or any other interview, he bleeds as green as any of them. He's from Linden NJ. I think he was born in Elizabeth, or lived there before Linden - same as our new coach. I think that matters. He wants to be a Jet for his entire career. With some players it doesn't matter at all, but I think it's different with Mo. If missing a spring workout or two is what's needed for them to pay more attention to his contract demands, so be it. If it gets to Revis status, and he's not in camp for weeks, then it's a different story. With McCagnan/ Bowles in charge, I expect a different reaction than our previous two GM's - based on the David Harris contract, primarily. I expect something to get done, and I don't expect a panic trade. If that happens, my entire good feeling about our new regime flies out the window. It would not make sense at all.
I htink the OP did a very good analysis about how and why no other team is probably in a better position to trade with the Tits than the Jets. But that may merely mean as others have suggested that Mariota ends up going to them. As for the issue of Wilkerson and whether he has been making unreasonable demands, it makes sense for the Jets to not make it sound like he is, so I don't think anything of the FO not criticizing him or anything like that. It also makes no sense for Wilkerson to complain about the Jets, either, at this point, since there is no upside to his doing that. I just can't avoid thinking that if the Jets thought they could sign Wilkerson to a number they could live with, and they did not want to use him as trade bait moving up in the draft, they would have signed him by now. The "and" part is significant since they could of course sign him and still trade him as part of the deal, but that merely makes me more of the opinion that there is in fact real distance between the FO and Wilkerson on the money. IF that is the case, then what we have been hearing and not hearing makes complete sense. Stay cool, say what has been said and nothing more, trade Wilkerson to Tennessee and get Mariota. I just don't think Tennessee will do that deal. I would do it for the Jets, though, on the assumption there is some real significance to the likelihood they are too far apart on numbers with Wilkerson.
Historically speaking, trading up for a QB never works. ESPN was talking about this, and then I found this article about it online: "The practice of trading up for a quarterback has a scary history as the Chicago Sun-Times pointed out on Monday -- Kyle Boller, J.P. Losman,Jason Campbell, Brady Quinn, Mark Sanchez, Josh Freeman, Tim Tebow, Blaine Gabbert, Robert Griffin III, Johnny Manziel -- but perhaps this year a new precedent will be set." http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...ich-teams-could-trade-up-for-titans-no-2-pick Of course it all depends on Mariota, but still, yikes! Most likely whoever trades up for him will set their franchise back for years.
False. Even the article doesn't say that. GB traded up, over us, and plucked Favre from our grasp. Btw.
What about the guys in the article? You forgot about them? What are the odds of all the QB's ever picked? Don't go after your convictions based on that article, okay
I like Mo as much as anybody but if Jimmy Graham got traded for 31st overall with a contract... what is Mo's value in this market?
Mo is younger and largely independent of the system. Most importantly, he fills TEN's major need. From their standpoint, Mo + 6 (WR or pass rusher) makes a lot of sense. From Jets standpoint as well, especially if there is significant gap re contract.
We can't say there is no chance Tenn makes that deal, because you are correct that the Jets can make an attractive offer to them. I just don't see them passing on Mariota, although I can hope.
I think it's about 50/50. Their guys are high on Mettenberger. Draft another young QB while team has so many holes? Especially when there is a decent offer on the table.... IDK, I think if Jets offered Mo + 6, TEN would be hard pressed to refuse.
