My draft is a lot different than others I have seen--In addition to getting some solid players, I'm looking to accumulate picks for 2016. Interested in comments. 6. Brandon Scherff (may be able to trade down 2 or 3 slots and pick up a mid round pick next year) 37. Shaq Thompson: most likely special teams monster in 1st year while learning the NFL--expect him to figure out OLB by 2nd year. GREAT cover guy for LB. I love this guy. 70. TRADE OUT OF THIS PICK FOR 5TH ROUNDER THIS YEAR, AND 3RD NEXT YEAR 104. Zach Hodges: Great motor, good mental ability will excel on special teams while learning LB position. Very versatile in college. (May be able to trade down and pick up 2016 later round pick). @150 from 3rd round trade: Kyle Loomis. Obviously need a punter--May be Mike Scifres good. Worth the risk for the possible payoff given our need and who else will be available at this pick. There are a host of ways to pick up these 4 guys--its not a sexy draft but it addresses needs with solid probability of success.
Trading a 3rd rounder for 5th and 3rd next year would be a very very bad move... We have a early 3rd rounder?
I want the 5th rounder this year to draft Loomis. I figure a 3rd next year in addition would be minimum. Maybe a 3rd + 6th next year?
Not really a fan, to be honest. To high for someone who projects as an OG and don't see the point of trading for future picks in a draft we're already without our 5th and 6th rounders.
What I'm thinking is that we've signed a lot of vets to fill out the bottom of the roster this year--my draft addresses OLB, P, and OT for next year and the future. I don't see a lot of value in this draft for us given our current strengths and weaknesses beyond what I mention. That's the reason I favor building up picks for 2016.
How do you know that "Loomis" will be there in the 5th? Come on lol we have a early early 3rd rounder trading that for an unknown 3rd next year and a 5th?? Maybe a 4th this year and a 2nd next year if that.
That's interesting--you think he may go higher than in the 5th? I don't follow all the talking heads too closely--are they that high on him? If you are right about the value of the 70 pick, sure, get full value and then somehow get Loomis. I'd love to Bro; Take a couple hits and think about how awesome it will be to have Scherff at RT with Breno moved to RG. Then think about our secondary with a great cover LB all over the TE or RB out of the backfield--and as a QB spy against those with quick feet. Think about our ST's with 2 stud rookie LB's tearing up the field as they learn their craft. And then think about our D together with a great punting game. And think about our extra picks next year.
No value? I don't see how you figure that. With it being such a strong, deep draft at WR, OLB and RB (all positions of need), the value is NOW. Who knows what next year's draft will be like? Drafting solely for need is usually a recipe for failure. Focusing too much on "value" can cause you to ignore taking one of the best players in the draft as well. A prime example of this is Gurley. Many think he is one of the top 2-4 players in the draft, yet in terms of value, the RB position is bottom of the 1st round or 2nd round. I'm not advocating taking Gurley at #6, but I think it's a bit whacko to pass on one of the best players in the draft (regardless of position) just in order to get "value." The whole idea of the draft is to get the best talent you can on your football team. Mac seeks to address need through FA, where, as he says one is comparing apples to apples. Also, taking Scherff at #6 is anything BUT value. IMO that's not only poor value but a BIG reach.
We don't need an OL this year anymore than we need a pass rusher THIS year but we will probably end up taking the pass rusher or a wr at 6 because what we really need, a qb, will be long gone.
IMO we DO need an OL (LT) this year as Brick is due $17.4 million next year and his play is declining. The problem is that Scherff doesn't project to LT.
And then a buzzkill when you think about the QB situation which makes every other thought you had meaningless.
You're right that I am coming from the "draft to need" perspective and you are right to point out the pitfalls. Smart post. Personally I find Fowler, Beasley, and Ray to be more bust-likely than Scherff and I don't see anyone left at 6 with a better chance at delivering and a better fit for need. RB's get hurt too damn often.

ok--then trade the 70 for a 4th this year and a 3rd next and then trade the 4th for a 5th this year and a 5th next year. The point is to pick up the punter and have extra picks for next year.
