    https://www.yahoo.com/autos/s/gm-ford-others-want-working-own-car-illegal-160000229.html

    General Motors Company
    BMW Group
    FCA US LLC
    Ford Motor Company
    Jaguar Land Rover
    Mazda
    Mercedes-Benz USA
    Mitsubishi Motors
    Porsche
    Toyota
    Volkswagen Group of America
    Volvo Cars North America

All these companies are seeking to to classify cars and tractors as "mobile computing devices" and be under the DMCA (digital millenium Copyright Act). They are saying you don't own your vehicle. That you just paying for the rights to use their technology. Being able to work on your vehicle leads to music piracy. They say cars are so advanced that working on your car poses safety and security concerns. The American Big 3 wants you to go to jail for working on your car...?

You know who owns the vehicle?

The person or entity listed on the vehicle title.

Unless BMW or Jeep is listed on my title they can go fuck off.

The problem is some dealers like Toyota, finance the loan for cars through Toyota financial services, if something like this would happen, I would just go to my local credit union.

sounds crazy so it probably won't be long before our wonderful politicians are shoving it down our throats as something we need to be safe. probably part of the 2024 patriot act. looking forward to being much safer.

What it really boils down is them not wanting us to discover what inside their fortune cookies. I'm sure there is stuff in there nobody should be mucking around with but on the other hand I wonder how much data is being collected, packaged and sold to 3rd parties about their customers driving habits.

I recently switched car insurance. The fuckin company wanted me to voluntarily put this monitor in my car to judge my driving habits (time of driving, speed, braking, etc)

The balls on those fuckin scumbags to act like I would really actually want to do that.

That's the future, we will all have shit collecting data all the time.

Imagine your health insurance company: "uh oh.. Based on the chip we implanted into your ball sac it shows you didn't exercise last month at all... I'm sorry but that's a 10% rate increase... The good news is that If you volunteer to keep it in you have the chance to lower your rate next month.."

If you lease your car, the leasing company is on the title as the owner. Whether it's Toyota or your local credit union. If you financed a purchase, whomever gave you the auto loan is listed as a lien holder.

Once you pay off the loan, or purchase the car at lease end, you and only you are listed on the vehicle title.

If a car company wants to claim ownership of my fully paid off car, they are going to need to find some way to get on my title.

    Good luck with that.

Think about it. What they want to do is keep the repair business in house. They want their cars to be serviced by their mechs. They keep these guys on staff and you have to pay huge money in parts and labor costs if you go to the dealership for any out of warranty work. The Car makers don't make money off warranty work. They're just trying to corner this niche market to drive the indies out of business.

They can claim ownership and say I am just paying for the rights to use their technology if they want - - - as long as I don't have to insure or maintain the car. We can treat it like a house. If I am renting I can't insure it, just the contents inside of it and I am not responsible for the routine maintenance!

(of course that would never, ever happen :D)

Yeah they've been trying to squeeze out your local mechanic for years..

I remember they tried something similar in the late 80s, basiclly said that the software on (and the software the dealers used to troubleshoot) the vehicles was proprietary and that they were not going to release it outside of the dealers, therefore only dealers could work on modern vehicles. The supreme court stepped in and forced them to release it because the fact that only dealers could work on or repair a vehicle made it a monopoly, or something along those lines.

If they own my car and I drunkenly plow into a crowd of kindergarteners, they can stand trial with me.
