...before you jump down my throat and call me names, hear me out. I'm not comparing them as QB's, I'm comparing them as draft prospects. It's easy to forget now since Geno has been slow to develop, and has been maddeningly inconsistent in his first 2 seasons, but he was projected to go in the top 5 in his draft. Like Mariota, he was considered a developmental prospect with good tools, someone who would need time to develop. Few expect Mariota to be able to start in his rookie year, and Geno was clearly not ready either when he was forced into the starting lineup year 1. Geno was projected to go #2 or #3 overall, and possibly even #1 overall, in the weeks leading up to his draft. When he slipped to our pick at #9, many were surprised we took Dee Milliner over him, and people were even more surprised we passed on him for Sheldon Richardson at #13 (close call!). And then, somehow he slipped all the way to our pick near the top of round 2, when the Jets FO considered him to be worth the risk. Exactly the kind of prospect Mariota is this year, in terms of draft grade. So don't be surprised if Mariota slips way down the draft if nobody is willing to pull the trigger at the top. Most likely someone trades up for him and he goes top 10 as expected, but remember that's where Geno was expected to go as well, and it never happened...
There was way more negativity about Geno leading up to the draft. IIRC there were reports that he was a diva and not a leader in college. I haven't seen anything negative about MM other than him needing time to acclimate to the NFL, huddles, etc.
Geno Smith was NOT projected to go first in April. In January /early February he was, but in April/March no one expected him to be a top 5 pick...
I'm not a fan of mock drafts, but as you can see Geno was projected , by the media at least , to be picked in round 2. http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/0ap1...sevenround-mock-forecasts-every-pick-1-to-254
I am jumping down your throat and calling you names. How many Heismans did Geno win before the draft projections were set? Draft position should not be a measuring stick when doing comparisons and yet posters continue to make convoluted arguments how Geno and Mariota are somehow "the same". Can't see how a caliber kid like MM would fall like a rock per Johnny Manziel.
What a jackass. Seriously GTFO Jesus freak and leave the football talk to folks who actually watch the game. You're embarrasing yourself. _
So far Mariota has been compared recently to Tim Tebow, Geno Smith, Colin Kaepernick, Aaron Rodgers, and RG3. Those QBs couldn't be more different, so can we please stop trying to peg Mariota as one of these guys and just analyze Mariota for what he is rather than trying to come up with who he's like? I for one will be disappointed if we don't land Mariota in this draft. I think he's a top 10 QB in this league in the near future. With that said, if Geno Smith had some semblance of a work ethic, which maybe this offseason shows that he does, I'm not convinced that Geno can't be an average NFL starter either. I'd rather have options at the position, and I think Mariota has a much higher ceiling than Geno, so give me Mariota. If not, I guess Fowler or Cooper would be my next picks if we don't trade down.
If both QBs are gone nobody will trade up to 6 as there is no longer any standouts to trade up for. Whether it's a WR, edge rusher, RB or whatever they may want there are plent that will still be available where ever they pick.
The only comparison's between Geno and Mariota as draft prospects was that they were top 2 QB prospects in their respective classes.
Yes, but in the case of Geno, that 2013 QB class was potentially the worst in the last 10 years. Top to bottom they were crap. This class's top 2 prospects are far far superior to the top 2 in 2013. _
I can agree with that. Geno was a better prospect than Manuel, but he is behind Mariota and miles behind Winston.
Yeah I think he's miles behind both if them. That Manuel pick was a head scratcher. Nobody should have been a first round pick that year and IMHO not even a second round pick. Wouldn't mind if Winston were sitting there at 6 if MM goes to TB _
I'm certainly not getting into another "how good is Mariota" discussion. I think he is a very good, and very flawed prospect. I wouldnt pick him at 6, but I'd fully understand if the Jets did.
Was just looking at the 2013 NFL Mock Drafts.....we were linked to Barkevious Mingo, Jarvis Jones, Chance Warmack and Tavon Austin, all who have been below average. I'd like to see Milliner stay healthy this year, Richardson continue this thing, and Geno take the next step with a better offense. We may have done extremely well in the first 2 rounds of that draft.
Wow. That's not how I remember it. Geno was getting tons of negative press up to the draft. Maycock's profile of him all but sealed his second round fate. Conversely, Mike has been licking Mariota nut sack recently.
As usual, that's your "original opinion" that has no basis in facts or evidence. Totally unsupported by anything real. But I guess that's the fictional world you've created for yourself....nothing to see here. Stop attacking me, nobody respects you or pays attention to your posts on here anyway. You are just wasting your time. Seriously, the mods should ban you...you are an angry hater living in your own fantasy world. I'm so sick of your adolescent juvenile garbage!
