There was zero draft hype around Tebow as a QB, folks knew before the draft that he couldn't throw. That that idiot McDaniel took him, especially in the first round, was mocked unmercifully pretty much universally. There was hype about the persona, not as a QB. _
His rookie year he had the read option and the pistol that were fairly "new" at the NFL level and it fooled Ds especially when tired. Along with Mike Shannahans run game with Alfred Morris. Once NFL Ds adjusted to the read option and started getting hits on him it was over for him.
My comparison between Mariota and Tebow is based on the fact that: A) they are both smart, mature, high-character guys who work hard, and B) they both ran college offenses that don't translate well to the NFL. And one of the knocks on Mariota is that he struggles going through his progressions (in fact he rarely had to look past his top 2 options on any given play), and he's not all that accurate on deep balls. He never had to anticipate guys getting open and release the ball ahead of time. Mariota, Kaepernick, RGIII, and Tebow are all similar QB's with styles that don't translate into continued NFL success.
You really going to compare Mariota to Tebow? You have to be kidding man, look at how they throw the freaking football. Mariota can toss a nice pig-skin, very catch-able ball, good mechanics on his throws. Nice release. Mariota thrives on the short and intermediate passes. Tebow couldn't complete a pass 5 yards down the field. Don't be a dumb-ass bud. The only comparison is they are both spread QBs and that's where the comparison ends.
I agree. I was just pointing out that if you pass on a QB who becomes one of the top 5, it really hurts and you'll get killed by the fans, media and other teams for passing on him.
OK here are some facts (sure to scare away JJ Stokes lol..fitting I guess that his screen name is an NFL draft bust!) There have been 21 drafts in which 2 QB's were selected in the top 10. In only 4 of those 21 drafts did both QB's make the Pro Bowl and/or Super Bowl: 1971, 1995, 2004, 2012. Those QB's: Andrew Luck, RG3, Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers, Steve McNair, Kerry Collins, Jim Plunkett, Archie Manning. This "illustrious" list represents the top 8 out of 42 QB's taken. So the chances of both Winston and Mariota living up to their draft hype....very slim. So the facts show that drafting Mariota is really rolling the dice.
That's fair. Comparing MM to Tebow and GeNo is a far reach at best. The draft as a whole is rolling the dice. That doesn't stop you from going for the best chance for attaining the most important piece for sustained success and just one lousy chance to attain the ultimate goal. That list of yours is nice package, gimme any one of those guys, except maybe Collins. But even Collins got close
Yes, so let's roll the dice on Geno and Fitz. Who needs a FQB we can use them for next three years have 6-10 , 8-8, and 9-7 seasons and never return to the 6 th position in the draft. Now that's smart.
So you are arguing causation? What has occurred in history under a completely different set of facts will cause the same result to happen? Those "facts" don't drive results. You should have skipped some theology courses and taken a logic course or two. _
So you're willing to overdraft a QB who really should go in the 2nd round, just because we have this quote "desperate need" for a QB? Well that explains why there are so many first round busts at the position I guess. .... btw, what makes you think we can't be a SB contender with an average QB surrounded by very good talented WR's and RB's, along with a super-elite defense? That exact formula has worked several times before in the recent past (see Balt, TB, NYG).
None, it's the kind of "original thought" you apparently want from me LOL. (all kidding aside, it's based on the fact that he's a raw project with some good tools to work with)
You know nothing about him other than other people's opinion of him. I hope you don't vote based upon other people's opinions of candidates. Actually I hope you don't vote at all. I'd love to continue this but I'm creating a wonderous meal for and then going to have sex with a woman I am not married to. Please pray for my soul. _
Name your "average QB" that the Jets can hire? Maybe he is right under our nose or playing in the CFL. Fitz has not brought any team to the SB, recovering from a broken leg and has a few good years left. He is an upgrade from Geno but that's it. There are 2 sides to the coin if you draft or don't draft a 1st round QB . What if he become a star for some other team? Then you eat crow. Look at last years class: Carr, Bridgewater, Mettenberg all of them pretty good .IMO Colleges are cranking out better QBS for the NFL. Perhaps a new "historical" trend. You have to be blind not to say MM or JW is not as good as them. IMO there is a reason we have a need at QB average or better and that is because the ones we have are suspect. It is absolutely confounding how people believe every other draft prospect either at WR or OLB can never bust but at the position that is crucial to a team's success all the historical data on who busted comes out.
How about Geno Smith, he looked pretty good at times during last season's train wreck...no reason to believe he can't be much improved with a decent OC, Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, Jeremy Kerley, and Jace Amaro to throw to, and Ivory, Powell, and Ridley running the rock. Plus our offensive line is improved. Geno Smith will be plenty good enough this year. I was talking to a Packers fan who was surprised that Jets fans are so down on Geno, calling us an impatient fan base. He reminded me that Favre was a turnover machine early in his career, and even Joe Willie Namath threw a ton of picks and wasn't all that great other than his one magical super bowl season.
Do you know anything about science? If you do, it's from what you learned from other people, namely your teachers in school, and the authors of the textbooks your teachers used. You might have done a few experiments in lab classes here and there, but the vast majority of what you learned in school was second hand from other people, not your original work. (btw, even those lab "experiments" were just duplicates of what other scientists had already done before). So, according to your "logic", a Harvard graduate knows nothing but the "opinions" of others that he was brainwashed to believe in school. Ivy league college graduates know nothing other than what they were brainwashed to believe, the "talking points" of their professors.....ok, got it, you have no respect for educated people, because you think it's all just second hand knowledge, and your own personal experiences in your life trumps what all of the scientists, college professors, theologians, or other educated people know. Wow, ok, got it.....LOL. More fundamentally, you only know what you have seen with your own 2 eyes, or experienced firsthand in your life. So you think that "if a tree fell in the forest but you didn't see it, then it didn't really fall." Because your own personal experience is all that is real for you. If I told you that my dog is lying next to me as I type this, you wouldn't believe me because you didn't see it yourself. In fact, from your perspective I don't even have a dog unless you have personally seen it. That's the only way you can be sure of anything in life, if you personally see it or experience it. Talk about a narrow and extremely limited view of reality.
Ahhhhhhh I get it now. You're just a Geno butt boy. You've never seen Mariota play yet you compare him to Tebow because of what you've read. Not science. Not math. Not history. Not philosophy. Not logic. Not geology. Not anthropology. Your opinion of a QB. Your opinion of a QB is not based on your own views of him but on what you've read. That is incredibly pathetic. _
