Basically if the Jets draft Mariota which right now looks under 50% (although SI is predicting that the Jets will trade up to 4 with the Raiders to select him) he will play sometime in 2015. I'm thinking that he'll start some games in the last half of the season esp if the Jets have a losing season. Unless they feel he can't master the offense and don't want him to start if he isn't ready. Kind of what Arias did this past season with Logan Thomas.

Its a moot point now but a very interesting thought none the less. I don't know what Ryan hated about Simms but obviously it was enough to not even have him activated even after Vick showed he really didn't prepare much or care much for that matter.

Yea but his shitty play caused all of that negative press .I don't think these articles would exist if Geno looked good and showed promise in more then 2 games a year. And as far as the article goes I don't get what people find so mind blowing about this kind of thing Geno isnt the answer so we are looking for another QB lol why is that so hard to belive? It has nothing to do with bashing Geno

If Rex hated Simms he wouldn't have been on the team. And he was backup to Geno in 2013. He's just a Qb who might never get a chance to play. 0 starts in 3 seasons. Geno has 29 Mark had over 60. So if Simms had 30 plus starts would he be a better Qb than either of them. There's a good possibility of that since the bar with both guys has been set very very low.

No argument here LIB. Geno brought all this on himself and it will be Geno's play that either saves his NFL career or sinks it. He only has THIS year to figure it out since his protection (Idzik) isn't around anymore.

?We have had visits with every decent option at QB in the draft ......He doesn't have to be credible to read the writing on the wall here. You guys act like he knows the location of D.B.Cooper or something

Well if Simms is lucky, some other team will pick him up and he'll get his shot. As far as the Jets are concerned, his time here is pretty much over before it began. Maybe it was how he looked in practice. Who knows what was going on inside Jets HQ but when Idzik drafted Geno, Simms's clock started running. I think one of the great mysteries of our time other than what happened to Jimmy Hoffa is why didn't Simms ever get to play. I don't think we'll ever know..

because he's not that good? because of the few times he's been up and abut in the regular season he's been nothing special at all? because he has no future as a franchise QB, nor the projected growth to be one?

Simms was the scout team guy, a 3rd stringer now and then. he was a wash in college and has been lucky to have been retained as long as he has. its no great mystery why he hasn't started.

I remember Rex chuckling when asked by Michael Kay if Simms would start on MNF against the Dolphins.

I think the only way Matt will get a chance is through injury. Which is how a lot of Qbs who sat for years got their one and only chance. But to me the big mystery isn't why didn't Matt Simms not get a chance to play. He was a non drafted player who had to compete with high draft picks. The biggest QB mystery to me is why didn't Rex in 2012 give Tebow a start after Mark imploded. The guy had just the season before led Denver to the playoffs and beat Pittsburgh. And basically in the last two minutes of that game against us knocked us out of a possible playoff spot. OK so maybe Tim was horrible in practice. We don't know that because no one on the Jets has ever given us a straight answer on that. They could say, well the guy was terrible and can't throw a pass even in practice. The thing is what did Rex have to lose because Mark was that bad. If Tim was horrible after a few series take him out. But after 2011 and all of those improbable Denver wins (which was the reason they traded for him in the first place) why not just see what he could do. Who knows maybe he could have caught lightning in a bottle again. And won us some games.

I think if Rex had Tony Romo as an undrafted Qb on his squad (like Simms now) he would do the same thing. Laugh like an idiot (and basically insult the guy). But who knows Matt has looked good in pre-season games and not horrible in the few mop ups he's done in regulation games. Again you can't say a guy can't play until he proves it on the field in real games. Thanks to Parcells Romo got a shot.

Here's the thing: Winston is not gonna be a jet save a miracle. If the jets don't draft Mariota, Geno will probably start in 2015. Even if they do, I don't see a scenario in which Geno is not on the roster come September.

Cman: we both saw Simms scramble around and ad lib some nice pre-season plays which showed off his above average arm. He had that 'win' during the last week of the pre-season vs. Philly playing against mostly soon-to-be-cut scrubs, but I'm thinking in particular of the 'Snoopy Bowl' game vs. the Giants when he was flushed out of the pocket to his right, found space on the edge, and then fired a 50-yd. bullet to Lehigh UDFA Ryan Spadola (?).

As far as pre-season 'practice' went (having seen him for a full week up in Cortland in both 2013 and 2014), they really didn't give him much of a play package to work with. Last season in particular, he pretty much ran the same 'scrub' offensive package as Tajh Boyd (Rex Ryan son's absurd Clemson suggestion). At Cortland, Simms would almost invariably throw nothing more than a 5-yard 'out' to his right, and Boyd would amost invariably give a look to his right on that same pattern, tuck it down and then take off around left end. And to be honest, Tajh in person was a runt with a non-NFL pop gun arm--no idea what Rex was thinking.

The only Jet-coach-son's-recomendation that panned out was when HC Walt Michael's son recommended Bruce Harper out of Kutztown State.

Joe, I remember that play and yessir, it was a beauty. He had certain "it" factor but he didn't get to show it here. That Giants game when he scrambled right and fired that bullet 50yds on a rope sold me on his arm strength and his moxie. That Rex took his kid's advice and drafted Tajh Boyd to compete with Simms I personally think was an insult to Simms. You're absolutely right, Simms never did get a true opportunity. Why? Ask Rex...

Bad timing I guess. We all know that the Qb "competition" was fixed last year. And the year before that.. Maybe if we're lucky, Rex is still stupid enough to take his kid's ace scouting talents seriously and drafts another referral.

I wish the kid well once he's released. It would be amazing if he comes to camp and actually outplays Geno. Wouldn't matter if Simms was the second coming of Aaron Rodgers though. If Simms is smart and the Jets are kind, they release Simms now so he can latch on with another team in time for TC. Kid? Catch the first thing smoking and get the hell outta here fast as you can. Just don't go to Buffalo no matter what.

Romo was an anomaly and granted he wasn't ready in his first 2 or 3 seasons but I bet he showed enough that they at least kept him around as a backup.

And we all know what a great judge of qb talent Rex is.

That Rex sucks at evaluating and managing the position.

Unfortunately it's an important aspect of a head coaches responsibility.

    Let's get a goddamn snack!
