No matter what happens you have to be a fool think that its likely that Geno will be gone. Obviously anything is possible, but he is signed, he is cheap, and we have nobody else that is decent. Even if we draft a QB in the draft and he starts opening day, which is a stretch, you are virtually certain to still see Geno on the sidelines.

Garbage article. It takes up to three years sometimes, before an NFL quarterback can become used to the speed of the league. I will admit that Geno does have my doubts but he deserves a shot under Gailey. At least he will be held accountable.

Smith deserves nothing and I have no doubt that if the Jets were holding one of the top two picks the only talk around here would be which of the two QBs will be replacing him. Smart people don't hitch their wagons to the guy that got their predecessors fired.

I hate Smith as a player, but a 1st year HC and GM should not move on from a 3rd year QB.

Idzik fucked it up by ditching El Nacho Loco, instead of playing out the string. You've got the Amish Popgun, see what Smith can do. Move on next year. you lose 13....you get Jones.

would be a head scratcher if they took a backup QB and a probable 3rd rounder with the no.1 overall pick

Not as much as taking a Qb that every other team in the league passed on, treating him like he was the top pick he wasn't, kept him as your starter despite being the worst starter in the league, losing games all by himself, showing no real development, and let him have a third year of flsuhing yet another season down the toilet.

Idzik was fired in part because of how he mismanaged the cornerbacks. But an equal factor, and one harder to fix going forward, was his handling of hte Qb position. I have no doubt Mac and Bowles get that, and they would be stupid to tie their fates to Smith. I doubt they will.

I can tell you what all this Qb search means for Matt Simms. I think we've pretty much seen the last of him in a Jets uni. Geno's leash is short, but Simms' shelf life has most likely come to an end.

It's amazing he's lasted this long. If Tajh Boyd wasn't the worst QB to get drafted, Simms would have probably been cut.

Another guy that just didn't develop. Wasn't much in college, not much in the NFL. There seems to be a distinct difference between the Manning gene pool and the Simms gene pool. Obviously talent skipped Matt.

The season is the season. When it is not the season, it is the off season. As in off the season.

Geno might ride the bench, but there is no chance he isnt a Jet next year.

If the Jets draft Mariota and Fitz is healthy Geno is expendable. The problem is there is no market for him. Nobody is going to give up better than a conditional higher round draft pick like at best a 5th. It would then depend on how Mariota develops in terms of Geno being on the team.

I don't think Geno would necessarily be expendable. Personally, I think Mariota can start this year if you tailor an offense for him, which Gailey definitely can. However, if the jets feel they need to develop him the smartest thing to do would be to start Fitz, have Geno backup and not even have Mariota active on game days. The last thing you want is for him to be the backup and for Fitz to get hurt and ruin the whole plan. Remember, the jags wanted bortles to sit the whole year before their starter got hurt.

Nothing says the depth chart couldn't have all three guys suit up. Just have Mariota chart plays. A real good place for Mariota in his first year would be up in the booth with Gailey. Would give him a great view of the field, of the defenses and the speed of the game at the pro level.

You know this board better than most, what do you think the reaction would be if the 6 overall pick was inactive on gameday all season?

I can hear the wolves now....

" WTF! Why isn't Mariota getting some garbage time at least???" or.... " Why did we draft him IF we didn't have plans on playing him" or the TGG classic reaction: "Mariota is a bust".
    Pick one.

That's why I said keep him on the bench and active, but with his hat on backwards, headset on his head and a clipboard in his hands. Unless the world ends or the Jets are up 50pts, Mariota does not see the field his first year. The more time Mariota spends with Gailey, assuming Gailey plans to be here for a while, the better.
