    ah, good.

this gives them a wider range of control going into next year, now we can take whatever he gives us as it is with less overall stress. hopefully he's a stud we've locked down pat going into next year.

All the stories I saw said the Jets "plan to" or "will" exercise the 5th year option on Coples. I know that's a small difference but it leaves the team an out until its officially done.

this money isnt guaranteed until next year correct? So if he sucks this year can we cut him and not be on the hook for the 7.8 mil?

I don't know if exerciseing Coples 5th year option was a great idea or not but what I do know is a little exercise would be great for Mike Francesa

You might be joking around, but he is starting to show that's what he is. He's a 1st round pick, that never lives up to the 1st round billing, but has a solid career. It's a little like Dustin Keller. He was a good TE for us, but in a re-draft, never would have been a 1st rounder.

I wasn't joking, that's how I view him at this point, very good run defender that was supposed to turn a corner in pass support and probably won't except a year or two of above average production in that respect. I just hope the new coach doesn't rely on him too much on 3rd down because he likes to do his disappearing act in those times

It's a shame coples gets no love here. He does all the dirty work and is definitely a starter in this league. He played well when wilk was out and has talent. He's not a great pass rusher, but he's above average imo, he'll definitely collapse the pocket from the outside and actually keep contain on run plays something we've been lamenting about before his arrival. Rex scheme and the circumstances forced us to use him differently last year, but he's arguably the 3rd best lineman we have and I rather have him on the field than babin.

It will be interesting to see how Bowles uses his D-Lineman plus Coples. Coples was drafted as an interior 3-4 D-lineman due to his ability to collapse the pocket right into the QB's face, something Rex said was the best defense against almost any QB when he drafted Coples.

Taking BPA (Richardson) made Coples expendable and Rex struggled to find a new home for him. Pass Rushing OLB was a good thought, but Coples is simply too big for that role. His natural weight is closer to 300 than 250 (Coples, not Rex lol).

The only sad part is we never got to play Coples on the d-line long enough to generate serious trade bait if it comes down to him or the Sons.

I just have a feeling that after some tinkering, Bowles will have him right where Rex had him just to keep him on the roster as insurance for the upcoming MoWilk/Richardson blood bath we're about to take. I would.

That is correct, it is only guaranteed for injury. If he sucks we cut him and move on.

Jets have had a recent history of drafting players like these. Lets hope with Bowles that he is able to weed out the ones that have this type of reputation in college.
