I don't know... I think Coples could become elite, but not at LB. Only problem is that if we move him, he won't start (unless, god forbid, something happens with Mo) and our OLBs will be two old men and a sixth and seventh rounder from 2014, making arguably our biggest draft need even bigger. If we get a guy like Gregory, Fowler, Beasley, Ray in first or a guy like Harold in the second, we could move Coples to DE in 2016 if we draft another pass rusher or if a guy like Enemkpali develops (though he's also more of a DE).
And it sucks because I thought Allen made strides as a safety in 2013. I mean, he played great against the two best TE's in the league (Gronk&Graham).
And what did he get for his troubles? The team drafting a player that should be playing his position in the first round. Gotta love Idzik.
I chose "no" on the option... He has underperformed his entire career as a Jet...there are undrafted players who have done more. Yes, he has had some tremendous backfield hits but not enough in enough games. I'm on board with a potential trade. Of course...he doesn't completely suck so if they do decide to extend and give him a "buy and try" under Bowles system/tutelage I won't cry a river either.
Oh shit no! That's just crazy. Next thing you know the damn frat is gonna start looking at me and trying to figure out which parts make a tenderloin, t-bone, and a filet. Well they can kiss my rump roast!
Yeah, it's not a clear case imo, either way. What about extending his current contract a year at some decent rate that includes incentives? That might be best for a buy and try approach. For both parties. After all if Coples doesn't want a chance to show he can succeed with Bowles and his system, he probably doesn't belong with the team, anyway.
They need to either trade him to a team that will play in on the d-line or move him to the strongside OLB position to replace Pace. Coples plays the run pretty well and can offer a nice pass rush from that position and would be an upgrade over Pace at this point.

I like it. Smart, low risk move. Guy has at least shown flashes, sometimes looks dominant. Talent doesn't grow on trees.
some team will think his only problem has been system, and that he would thrive somehow in a 4-3. trade him to that team, and get value in return. picking up the option puts us in a better position to do that.
I have no problem with picking up Coples option. He is underappreciated and over scrutinized by most here. Luckily, it's only here. He hasn't been a stud by any means but he's still a good player that has contributed as a starter and shown plenty of flashes.
Yeah, it's pretty funny that he's been the opposite of his boom or bust label coming out of college. He's neither.
