O'Brien had an excellent 1985 season, was even better to start 1986 then it was all downhill after that. at various points lost his job to Tony Eason, Kyle Mackey and Browning Nagle. That's all we really need to know about his greatness.
This is why the Jet fan base is some of the worst in the world. Guys hate the guy that threw the second most TDs in franchise history. Completed more passes than ANY QB in franchise history behind just Namath. Second most in yardage in the 50 plus years of the franchise. Third highest completion percentage and QB rating when receivers were allowed to be mugged and QBs were allowed to be creamed back in the day. Yeah, that guy. Not an all time great Jet. _
I guess the easiest way I can define a "great Jet" is that he is a Jet I considered a "great Jet" at the time he played not someone when looking back at his stats in hindsight. I can't in good conscience say O'brien was a "great Jet" when I didn't think of him in that regard back then. A lot of the guys you mentioned above I thought were great Jets at the time and till this day and it has nothing to them being in the Hall or Hall worthy.
I've been a fan since the SB and my impression of him has little to do with his stats but in retrospect looking at them he deserves a tad bit of credit and less hate. Maybe I'm a different kind of fan. _
And again I've never called him a great NFL QB. He was in my eyes a great Jet, one of our best QBs. _
speaking realistic about the guy is not "hating" him, what the folks on here do w/. Sanchez, what you do w/ Geno is "hate". Ken was a decent QB for us- nothing more. Pretending he was really good for us doesn't change the reality.
If thinking he was a good QB but not an "all time great Jet" IMO is hate, then color me a hater and different.
I was an O'Brien fan back then and I'm still an O'Brien fan today. I don't see any reason to hate the guy. _
I think we can "like" whomever we want. And, empirically, O'Brien's rating is what it is: 2nd all time in Jets history. I love it how people who have the sole purpose of running someone down claim to not "hate" them. How ISN'T it hating? What you're doing is colloquially known as "hating on"...
you can like who you want, I can have my opinions. I don't hate him, if you guys weren't overrating him I wouldn't have to bring it back down to reality. Decent QB but if he had the same career in this era he'd be getting killed, there would be billboards wanting him gone. He was HATED by Jet fans by the late 80s/early 90s. I used to get pissed at games when fans would boo him and it happened almost every game.
You haven't actually done that. You asserted your opinion. And, quite frankly, I have little respect for most of the ones I've read from you. So, if you think you've done anything, you've overrated the effect some hater is going to have on true fans. It's noisome chatter, that's all it is.
I think it's a total shame that Philbin isn't in the hall, even guys like Deacon Jones credit him as being one of the best DE's of the era.
A "fan" hates a Jet but disguises that hate for bringing true fans "back to reality"? It's pathetic really but we all know the truth. We haven't had many great QBs but O'Brien was one of our best. Not a great QB by NFL standards but he's easily to 2 or 3 or 4 in our franchises history but a fake fan will say he's only borderline top 5 which is laughable and shows true colors. He's an all time Jet in my book. _
Interesting. I consider Bert Jones an all time great Colt QB, yet O'Brien has more TDs, yardage, completions, higher completion rate and QB rating than Jones. Oh, Jones is also 0-3 in the playoffs. _
It'd be like somebody saying Jim Harbaugh was a better all time Colt QB than Bert Jones because he was 2-2 in the playoffs and Jones was 0-3. Ridiculous. _
