That is exactly correct. Every NYJ fan should adopt what U posted & then maybe we will all get alone far better then we do now

I think those 2 are mutually exclusive and can not co-exist. He can't be both great and mediocre. Just because he is at or near the top of a lot the franchise's QB statistical categories, that doesn't mean he was "great". It can just mean that he is at or near the top of a lot the franchise's QB statistical categories and that's it.

The analogy doesn't really apply because the skinniest chick at the fat farm is likely still fat and ugly provided you're sober, of course.

its just semantics. you are getting hung up on the word "great". Nobody would argue Ken O'brien is an all time great QB in this game but he's the second best QB this organization has seen therefore he's a franchise great.

I think of it this way, if you were at a big gathering of people, a dinner lets say and they introduced the speaker as "former Jets great, Ken O'Brien" would you be shocked? not really. I'm not sure they could use that term with any other Jets QB besides Namath, Pennington would probably be fine too though.

but he's not the 2nd best in franchise history, b/c he played more games he compiled #s to fool the average fan but he's not the 2nd best.

Well the semantics is the crux of the argument Junc seems to be having with the field. He doesn't believe O'brien was a "great" Jet. He believes he was a good Jets who compiled a lot of numbers. I agree with that.

I wouldn't not be shocked if someone used the word "great" to described almost any former Jet as that adjective is used as loosely in some venues as the verb "sucks" is used by fans.

Note we are not at a banquet but on a message board so words matter as that's all we have to go on.

no Junc's dumb argument is that he is a choker in big games.. that Pat Ryan was better.. that he's not the 2nd best QB in franchise history.. etc. his argument has nothing to do with an uneasiness about the term "great".

I didn't get that from reading his posts but everyone's reading comprehension is different.

Exactly. He's an all time great Jet, not an all time great NFL QB.

Any fan who would argue otherwise is not a good fan.

O'Brien was clearly one of our best QBs. The sample size is small, but it's undeniable that he was clearly one of the best--clearly top 5 and arguably 2 or 3 or 4 depending on your preference.

We'll all get along better when we're sitting at a pub in London having an ale.

Absolutely but he wasn't an all time great like a Maynard, Martin, Klecko, Toon…etc. He was a good QB that played many year for us.

I guess your definition means they need to be great NFL players, HOF or near HOF worthy.

That's not my definition of an all time great Jet. Snell, Boozer, Buttle, Mo, Glenn, Green, Schuler, Turner, Leahy, Rassmusen, Sweeney, Harper all time great Jets.

    Just like O'Brien.

Patrick Ewing never won an NBA title, he was still pretty good.

What's with the Ken O'Brien hate?

    Geez...

but he won playoff series', right? Imagine if Ewing never won a playoff series in his career then you may have a valid comparison.

I don't hate Ken at all, I like Ken but he is vastly overrated on here.

And that he played many years for us should mean something. We've had very few QBs play as long as he did and that's because of the player he was--I can't imagine any rational fan would look at him as a compiler.

    I'm a rational fan.
