While I tend to agree with you, and have said as much in other threads while Mac was busy signing FAs, we don't have all the facts and every situation isn't black or white. One of the first things Mac may have done was reach out to Mo and his agents and been rebuffed or informed that they were expecting Watt money and he knew it wasn't going to be resolved easily. If he didn't then that might turn out to have been a mistake if for no other reasons than after seeing the money Revis got, Mo may have upped his demands. Regardless, Mac couldn't just deal with Mo and his agents and ignore improving the team and spending the money that the league required him to spend in FA. He also had draft preparations to make and FO, Scouting and Personnel changes to make. He had a LOT on his plate. I think it's silly to bust his chops when we don't know the facts and accuse him of "stupid cat and mouse games." He knew he had Mo under contract and knew Mo's promise to not hold out. While I have a level of concern, I'm not panicking or ready to kill Mac for not having signed Mo already. As some have pointed out, Mo takes some plays off and isn't a leader. If he can't understand why Mac hasn't re-signed him already and can't see the ways in which Mac is making this a better team, and is going to get pissy, petulant and have an attitude, then I don't care if they trade Mo.
Revis and Cro really aren't 'outsiders' (and the rest of the outsiders didn't get that much)...and Mo'd get more guaranteed money than either anyway.
why? he can ask for anything he wants, doesn't mean he will get it but you have to try and get every dollar in this sport.
It will be interesting to see how Wilkerson looks under Bowles. Is it possible that the tendency to take plays off or play like someone who is NOT the type of defensive leader he could be, a reflection of the Rex Ryan lack of accountability? Wilkerson was heavily praised by Rex, maybe thats not the type of motivation he needed? everyone is different. If his play doesn't change much under Bowles, and thats entirely possible, than I totally see your point in the last paragraph
As a fan, I would be disappointed, he's not Watt good. Again, Mo is one of my favorite players. Him asking for Watt money is not being reasonable. I think of Mo as a reasonable person, that will receive a contract that is fair and he should be compensated fairly. He should be asking for Robert Quinn money which is north of 60M. If he wants Watt money, he won't be a Jet - which would make me sad.
Negotiations aren't about being reasonable. Usually the player wants more and the team offers less and hopefully they meet somewhere in the middle. we shouldn't worry about his contract, he'll stage a holdout but even w/o a new deal he'll be back and ready to play at some point.
Negotiations are to get to a reasonable dollar. Again, I highly doubt in the first place Mo, and his agent went to Mac and said we want Watt money. Market, statistics, all of that plays a role. You aren't going to receive what you haven't earned in the NFL.
i honestly feel like people are expecting mo to ask for world class money, but i don't see it i'd expect him to get a calais campbell type deal which was 5 years, $55 million with $31 million guaranteed. that seems reasonable for mo
I'm not gonna lie I'm a little nervous about overpaying Mo its hard to figure out what he's worth because his numbers don't jump out at you ,he's never even made a pro bowl yet.Honestly he shouldn't be paid like a top DE because he's not a top DE.He's somewhere in the middle right now ,he doesn't deserve JJ Watt money yet he's no where near that level he had 6 sacks last season and 56 tackles
the pro bowl is a joke, he has deserved to make at least 2 if not more. he is a top player, he's not a JJ Watt(there's only one of him) but he's a big time player and deserves to be paid like a big time player.
He was a 2nd team all-pro which to me is a far better recognition of talent. Also, remember Wilk was hurt last year. He should receive somewhere around 65M - around the same ball-park as Robert Quinn from the Rams. There you are paying him for his contributions as well as his upside.
he'll get his, no doubt. I'm shocked by number of fans wanting to trade him, screw that noise. agreed, Quinn's deal would be an appropriate base even with the difference in defensive formation.
Yes the pro bowl game is a joke but the award itself is not. What has he done to deserve "big time" money?Hes a good player but he isn't the Darelle Revis of DE's.He deserves something inbetween good and great whatever that is
I'm still scratching my head over that one,I wanted us to resign Harris but not for that.I like everything Mac has done so far but that's one move I didn't really get
Revis is an all time great, not fair to compare him but Mo is one of the best in the league at his position.
I would like to pay him for his contributions but do not want to write a blank check for his upside. If he wants $14 mil plus we should trade him for what we can get now.
This isn't a blank check. This is a contract for his contributions prior and his upside as he enters the prime of his career. He's already in the top of the DE / DT rankings. Technically this isn't a 14/ M contract, especially if we set the contract to give him a good amount of cash early. We have no major resigning obligations until Richardson is in play. Jets can make this work and they need to. You cannot let Wilkerson leave this franchise.
