Yeah a little before my time but honestly I can't think of another guy who started at Center in the last 30 years outside of an injury in the last 30 years. We don't have a long list of QB's or LT's or CB's but we have an elite list of centers. I had to look up some info on these guys but Sweeney was fucking durable, guy started every game for the Jets at Center for 7 consecutive seasons but also for 5 consecutive seasons at either LG or LT. 12 straight seasons on the OL and the guy didn't miss a start. He's now the offensive line coach at the U of Albany. Joe Fields was drafted in the 14th round..... 14th fucking round. Went to Widener and is a NJ Native. 3 time all pro selection in 82,83 and 85. Played for the Jets from 75-87. Hard to imagine a guy who made All pro 3 times is our 3rd best Center.
Hard to imagine our all time completion leader and second all time in yardage and touch downs and 3rd all time in INT%, completion % and QB rating isn't in our top 5 QBs but someone here will tell you that. _
Jets made some poor decisions at QB, along with developing them. That is why this franchise has never been truly successful.
Well we did win a Super Bowl.... but yeah...we haven't been good at drafting or developing qb talent. Even the Farve situation turned to shit after half a season. Slingin' Sammy Baugh was our 1st head coach...Namath is the only qb to pass for 4,000 yrds. in a 14 game season. If anything, the Jets should be known for quality play from the qb position.
This is true, but the Jets have also had some really shitty luck with QB injuries. I know no one likes to use that as excuse but it's the truth. First, Namath missing so many games in the years after SBIII. Then Pat Ryan getting hurt just while he's playing at a high level and about to beat Cleveland to get to the AFC title game. Vinny tearing his achilles, sending the SB dreams of the '99 Jets straight to the toilet. Chad getting hurt every other year just when he's trying to establish himself a franchise QB. THAT was the worst one b/c it looked like we finally had a damn good young QB who was gonna be here for 10+ years. Even Favre couldn't get through his one season in NY without getting hurt.
Good point, although I still think the Favre injury was overblown. He just didn't want to be here. The Jets were a stepping stone to the Vikings.
Biggest knock most Jets fans have against O'brien is that he was taken in front of Marino. Any other draft, or if Marina had been off the boards he'd be well regarded as a Jets QB.
My evaluation system is based on reality not the fact that you still wear Joe Namath underoos. show me one posts where I EVER discussed Joe's comp % or related it to today's game? you are making stuff up again b/c I discuss reality about your hero. you are in your 50s/60s- time to stop idolizing athletes. If you could read you would understand I have NEVER called Mark great or said he would be but on here he's treated like he was garbage and did nothing. go bow down to the most overrated QB in the game and stay out of these discussions. anyone who thinks Ken O'Brien was great doesn't have a clue, 2nd logest tenured QB who inherited a young and talented team in a weak era for AFC football couldn't win a single playoff game. You can spare me the rest of the excuses.
it makes me sound like someone who actually knows what he is talking about rather than allowing adolescent hero worship dictate what a person thinks.
#1 D and run game on PAPER. sometimes you actually have to watch games. how did that #1 D do w/ a double digit lead against a legendary choker in the title game in 2009? how many games did the D blow late in those 2 title game years? did you know the great Philip Rivers had the #1 D in 2010? did you know he didn't make the playoffs despite leading the #1 O. sometimes we have to look beyond just the #s. Our run games were good and at times very good, we did NOT have a dominant ground game and the same thing could be said about those overrated Ds.
how can an all time great Jet QB not lead the franchise to a single playoff win despite playing in probably the most talented era of Jets football against a weak AFC? I don't get this, b/c he looked good throwing a deep ball to big time WRs/TEs? decent QB, nothing more.
maybe if he got a bye to the championship game and they let them play it at home he'd have one like Joe?
couple of reasons: tackle stats were kept by teams so they were inflated many of his tackles were downfield, he wasn't getting in the backfield tackling guys for a loss. solid player though.
you should take this comedy act on the road. Rarely did he absorb big hits, he was usually falling down on his own to protect himself after holding the ball way too long PLUS he had the "in the grasp years" where basically if you touched a QB they ruled the played dead.
he will likely be starting in Philly this year, really the first year post injury he has had a chance and when he took over the Eagles for Foles he ELEVATED that offense.
The funniest part of all the O'Brien worship here is if he had the EXACT SAME CAREER in this era you guys would be bashing him EVERY SINGLE day. People forget how HATED O'Brien was by JET fans and now since it's been 20+ years everyone forgets but I don't. it also amazes me how a fanbase(granted one of the worst in all of sports but...) can pretend like O'Brien was great and praise him up and down yet bash Mark Sanchez like he was Bubby Brister 1995.
