still holding out hope for Mariota, Cooper, or Fowler, in that order.. if all are gone, then have to consider White, or 'reaching' for an Olineman..
I would love any of my top 6 in this order Mariota Winston Fowler Cooper Williams Dupree I hope we can not take a WR in the first because I'm totally in love with Phillip Dorsett in the second. Remindes me of OBJ
On the surface a dominant pass rusher is more valuable than a #1 WR however if I am Mike McCagnan and this is my first pick as a GM I play it safe and take Cooper/White. Beasley, Fowler, Ray, etc.... I am sure one or two of them will be great, but I guarantee there will be a bust or two as well. Cooper and White are pretty safe picks-Draft one of them and we can cut Marshall next year.
Busts are a risk at every position, and WRs drafted in the first round are not immune. In fact, they bust more often than you would think. A top 6 pick shouldn't be a safe pick. It should be the BPA; you're supposed to get blue chip players at this level. If we believe Cooper or White can be that player, we should draft one of them. That said, personally I think Vic Beasley will be the best of all the players you listed. I guess we'll see in time.
I think Cooper is the most safe pick there is but Beasley fills a need AND may be BPA. I'm fine with either. I wouldn't mind Kevin White or Fowler either, though I think Fowler will be gone. I hope we get a RB out of the top 3 rounds. There's some nice prospects that should be in the 2-4 rounds like Jay train and Tevin Coleman. If we don't go WR in the 1st 2 rounds, I don't want one. I don't want to us to do like Idzik did and get guys just for the sake of getting them (I know that wasn't his plan, but it sure came off that way). If we can get an edge rusher and WR out of this draft, I'd be happy. A O lineman and RB would be excellent.
I'm holding hope for Cooper @ 6. He would be such a difference maker on this offense. I think he would bring more value then any pass-rusher in this draft. This kid is one of the best route runners I've seen coming out of college in some-time. He's going to make defenders look silly out there.
Not to mention... i don't know why nobody finds this alarming... our weapons are incredibly SLOW! At least Kerley and Amari Cooper are quick enough to make plays though they lack sprinter speed. I could only imagine how long it would take a play to develop with just Marshall and Decker.
If Amari Cooper is there I say take him. You can't fix QB right now, so make a competitive offense. B. Marshall only has so many years left in him.
Cooper's 40 time at the combine was corrected to be between 4.35 and 4.38, which I would categorize as sprinters speed. The video mashup of Cooper, White and Parker running the 40 showed Cooper slightly ahead of White. That straight line speed combined with his phenomenal short area quickness would be very, very dangerous out of the slot combined with Marshall and Decker on the outside.
Agreed. While WRs don't win Super Bowls, having a competitive offense sets up the quarterback to have a better chance at succeeding. If not Geno, then whomever the Jets bring in the future. Marshall will give the Jets a couple of years but eventually will retire. Cooper would give the Jets an excellent transition piece while ensuring the offense remains competitive well into the future.
Wow. No love for Ray? If we stay at 6, the pick has to be either a WR of OLB. That is where the value is. I think Mariota is the 2nd overall pick. It may not be the Titans, but he will be 2nd overall pick. Like a previous poster mentioned, what our WR corp lacks is speed. Marshall, Decker and Kerley are all possession guys. And Kerley is way overrated by Jets fans. He's more of a 4th WR. So speed at WR is a huge need for Jets. Now we can add speed with a guy like White or Cooper, but we can also get a burner in the 2nd round with a guy like D.Smith or Dorsett. This WR class is loaded and I think we can afford to wait until the 2nd, maybe even the 3rd to pick up a WR who can come in and contribute right away. While this class is also loaded with 3-4 OLB, besides the top guys, the rest are going to take time to develop. 2 guys that aren't getting any love in this thread and who are both absolutely worthy of the 6th pick are Beasley and Ray. Both have the potential to become elite EDGE guys in the league. Beasley is the top EDGE guy in this draft and will contribute right away and will immediately be a terror on passing downs. He is a very polished pass rusher with multiple pass rush moves. Ray is an animal. He's relentless, plays with a non stop motor and phenomenal strength. He's one of my favorite players in the draft. His relentlessness reminds me of the great Lawrence Taylor. I know how crazy that may sound, but that's who he reminds me of. I was sleeping on him as well until I started studying his film.
Some say Ray has below-average technique [usage of his hands, counter-pass rush moves] and his game is completely reliant on his athletic ability. I think the guy has an excellent motor, and he's relentless as hell when it comes to the QB. I have to admit, I haven't done much research on Ray, but I like the kid's attitude.
I would too, the Jets need some legit speed on the team, but not at the expense of passing on Cooper or White in Rd 1.
I'm not as high on Fowler projecting into a dominant pass rusher as most. His ranking IMO is simply based on the fact that he is the safest of the pass rushers; the one with the highest floor. If Gregory wasn't a pot head, he'd have that spot. That said, the Jets current draft position reminds a lot of 2008 where there were a clear cut top 5 and we left outside looking in with pick 6 and ended up taking the Ghost. The top 5 this year IMO are Williams, Winston, Mariota, Cooper and Gregory. Because of Gregory's discretions, it's really more of a top 4*. The only one of the 4 I can see dropping to 6 is Mariota and that's probably 50/50 if that. The good news is that given our great d-line and secondary, anyone of the top pass rushers should yield some return in our defense. So I wouldn't be upset if we "reached" for a Ray, Dupree, Beasley or Gregory; the latter would have to be thoroughly vetted of course. Note I didn't include White in my top 4-5 because freakish measurables and ability aside, he's only has 1 year of high level production against top competition. That scares me about him.
No, but I don't think the Jets will take either Cooper or White. If Mariota's there, they'll take him, and may even trade up to make sure they get him. If not, then my guess is they'll grab a pass rusher if Fowler is there, and perhaps if they like Beasley well enough. The only way I see them taking Cooper or White is if both Mariota and Fowler are gone, and they don't think Beasley is good enough to take at #6 (with which I tend to agree). I'd love to add Cooper or White, but with Brick's declining play and huge contract next season, I think if Mariota and Fowler are gone, I'd rather see the Jets trade down and take which ever LT they think is the best prospect, then grab Dorsett in the 2nd.
