Can he put NY hoops back in hardwood heaven? Can he get anybody decent to play in New York? Can he even coach?
I hope Mullin is great but I hate to break it to people but Louie was a great personality but St. John's was not a power when he was there. they had some good seasons here and there but he had 5 Sweet 16 seasons, 3 elite seasons and 1 FF in 24 years. The NY area isn't what it once was in regards to talent but it's still rich w/ talent and if Mullin can recruit NY well SJU should be a good program again.
Jay is still young and coaching, if when he is done he has a similar resume to Lou then I'll agree but he's a good coach and still relatively young. He can be criticized and deserves criticism for the tourney failures but he also deserves praise for turning that program around and making them relevant again.
Hopefully he molds his own legacy. Without knowing anything about his recruiting style, I think he'll be able to succeed. Coupling his success as a player with his St. Johns roots, he should be able to at least grab the attention of some of the talent in the five boroughs. I'm excited for it.
I just hope he can do the job. I love Chris Mullin. He's the reason why I am a St. John's fan and is my 2nd favorite St John's player of all time (I LOVED Malik Sealy). I want to see some Tourney wins and a respectable program again. I think Lavin did a good job. I loved this past senior class. Hopefully Mullin can take it to the next level.
Mullin has swag, hes confident, he is boss status...I believe in Chris Mullin the individual. As a coach that is the question...I have to see his staff and people he surrounds himself with...People that are there for the right reasons and who know NYC inside out. I want to see him win recruits. But he can be the coach this city, school and this fellow alum deserves
Yup.. Drunk driver killed him after he left Kevin Garnett's birthday party. That was a shitty day. That was actually a shitty few months of Athletes deaths. Payne Stewart in October '99, Derrick Thomas February 2000 and Malik Sealy in May 2000. Payne was my favorite golfer, and Malik Sealy my favorite SJU player.
http://nypost.com/2015/03/31/st-johns-poaches-top-recruiter-to-join-chris-mullins-staff/ Mullin stealing top recruiter from Iowa State THIS IS WHAT I AM TALKIN ABOUT
Abdelmassih was considered Hoiberg’s top recruiter, helping sign Royce White, DeAndre Kane and current starter Jameel McKay. He says Iowa State will be a “ridiculously hard place to leave.”
I imagine it is. Not whole lot of mass transportation in and out of Ames, IA. Its a long journey to the big city in those conestoga wagons. And fording that big Missouri river can be mighty tough. He should be okay once he gets to Arrow Rock where he can finally jump on the Union Pacific Railroad.. (easier said than done I know)
Publicity wise its a home run, greatest player in SJU history can bring excitement back to this program, now get some viable players
